COVID-19: Breath Test for Corona
Great news! A breath test would probably beat the usual fever infrared thermometer testing anytime!
"Prof. Hossam Haick and his team have shifted their focus to applying nanosensor technology to facilitate rapid and remote screening for COVID-19. These intelligent sensory systems can be used to diagnose Corona, and future epidemics. The group’s research focuses on breath testing using nano-sensors and AI and on a skin patch. The method is non-invasive, fast and inexpensive, and is already undergoing clinical trials in a hospital where COVID-19 is being treated.
Among many honors, Prof. Haick’s research received a prestigious Bill & Melinda Gates grant in 2015."

The Destructive And Lethal Virus Of Mass Hysteria
Posted: 3/30/2020
The virus of mass hysteria is so much worse than the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The vicious spiral is relentless. Politicians race to do more harm instead of appealing to common sense! Mass media and other means of communication are eagerly spreading the most ludicrous news possible and so on …
How mad were our politicians when they thought they could just shut down large parts of the economy to counter a relatively harmless, but contagious virus? When the cure is obviously worse than the disease!
The much needed voices of reason are hiding and/or are drowned out! Omnipresent medieval superstition is still manifest destiny in the 20th year of the 21st century! Human evolution is very slow despite all the education efforts! Common sense is in very scarce supply and hard to come by in these times!

The New Meaning Of Made In China
Posted: 3/30/2020
How times have changed rapidly! Yesterday, the integration of the economy of China into the world economy was paramount. For decades, Westerners were hoping to reform the communist totalitarian regime in China by opening up the Chinese market and economy.
Unfortunately, the political reform efforts under Deng Xiaoping were latest undone when Xi Jinping chose to be anointed to be the next dictator for life a la Mao in 2018.
Made in China and the Road and Belt initiative have been very smart moves by the Communist Party of China to gain global influence if not domination at very high speed and very large scale.
Now, the coronavirus has driven home the message that the Communist Party of China has not changed at all. It resorted to the usual active and massive spread of disinformation, pervasive censorship and oppression of dissidents, almost total secrecy, refusal of international aid etc.
Global supply chains depending on China need and most likely will be scrutinized and adjusted.
Let’s hope the coronavirus is the final nail in the coffin of the Communist Party of China!

The Much Abused Matthew effect
Posted: 3/28/2020
Recently, I watched episode 2 of Niall Ferguson's Networld documentary. He tried to explain certain network effects with the Matthew effect!
Apparently, sociologists like Robert K. Merton transferred this biblical narrative to describe certain effects in society. Merton is famous for such concepts as self fulfilling prophecy, unintended consequences, and role model. However, with the Matthew effect, he misappropriated and erred!
"The Matthew effect of accumulated advantage, Matthew principle, or Matthew effect for short, is sometimes summarized by the adage "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer""
"The Matthew effect of accumulated advantage, Matthew principle, or Matthew effect for short, is sometimes summarized by the adage "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer""
Some observations regarding the so called Matthew effect:
- The references in the Bible refer to spiritual gains not material gains. It is also quite obvious that the usual Bible references are taken out of context (see e.g. S1)
- The sociological view of this effect is extremely static and relies on primitive/naive extrapolation, while in reality society (in particular an open and free society) is much more dynamic etc.
Potent coronavirus drug candidate designed using 3D structure of key viral enzyme
Great news! This appears to be very promising research into the virus major protease! This research covers SARS-CoV-2, MERS, and HIV!
"The main Sars-CoV-2 protease is an enzyme that is crucial for the virus. It processes a large polyprotein – around 790kDa – that the virus makes by hijacking our own cell’s machinery, and then cleaves it into 12 smaller proteins that include the machinery the virus needs to replicate itself. The team at the University of Luebeck previously developed broad-spectrum inhibitors against this protease, known as α-ketoamides, for the major two types of coronaviruses that infect humans ... One compound, α-ketoamide 13b, inhibited the main protease of the virus, as well as the related Mers virus. The 13b inhibitor developed in Hilgenfeld’s lab was given to mice using a nebuliser without any adverse effects. This suggests direct delivery to the lungs may be feasible in Covid-19 patients. ... The virus’s major protease has been shown to be essential in other related viruses and as there are no identical proteases in the human body, it is a viable target,’ ... Perhaps the best example of protease inhibitors are those against HIV."

COVID-19 needs a Manhattan Project
Not only COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2 needs a Manhattan Project or Human Genome Project or HIV/AIDS program, but also the common cold and influenza viruses!
COVID-19 needs a Manhattan Project | Science: There is an unprecedented race to develop a vaccine against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). With at least 44 vaccines in early-stage development, what outcome can we expect? Will the first vaccine to cross the finish line be the safest and most effective? Or will it be the most well-funded vaccines that first become available, or perhaps those using vaccine technologies with the fewest regulatory hurdles? The answer could be a vaccine that ticks all these boxes. If we want to maximize the chances for success, however, and have enough doses to end the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, current piecemeal efforts won't be enough. If ever there was a case for a coordinated global vaccine development effort using a “big science” approach, it is now.
There is a strong track record for publicly funded, large-scale scientific endeavors that bring together global expertise and resources toward a common goal. The Manhattan Project brought about nuclear weapons quickly (although with terrible implications for humanity) through an approach that led to countless changes in how scientists from many countries work together. The Human Genome Project and CE

Pyocin S5 Import into Pseudomonas aeruginosa Reveals a Generic Mode of Bacteriocin Transport
Good news! Amazing stuff! Antibiotic resistance is history! Did you know that some bacteria defend themselves against invasive bacteria by using poisons/bacteriocin?
"Finally, we identify the minimal requirements for sensitizing Escherichia coli toward PyoS5, as well as other pyocins, and suggest that a generic pathway likely underpins the import of all TonB-dependent bacteriocins across the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria."
Pyocin S5 Import into Pseudomonas aeruginosa Reveals a Generic Mode of Bacteriocin Transport | mBio: Pyocin S5 (PyoS5) is a potent protein bacteriocin that eradicates the human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa in animal infection models, but its import mechanism is poorly understood. Here, using crystallography, biophysical and biochemical analyses, and live-cell imaging, we define the entry process of PyoS5 and reveal links to the transport mechanisms of other bacteriocins. In addition to its C-terminal pore-forming domain, elongated PyoS5 comprises two novel tandemly repeated kinked 3-helix bundle domains that structure-based alignments identify as key import domains in other pyocins. The central domain binds the lipid-bound common polysaccharide antigen, allowing the pyocin to accumulate on the cell surface. The N-terminal domain binds the ferric pyochelin transporter FptA while its associated disordered region binds the inner membrane protein TonB1, which together drive import of the bacteriocin across the outer membrane. Finally, we identify the minimal requirements for sensitizing Escherichia coli toward PyoS5, as well as other pyocins, and suggest that a generic pathway likely underpins the import of all TonB-dependent bacteriocins across the outer membrane of Gram-negative

Green AI
Unfortunately, scientists are only all too human and succumb to the ideologies of the day! They too follow fads and fashions of the time! Or does a research paper with the catchy title "Green AI" garner more citations?
And if you think, I am picking here on some third rate scientists, you are mistaken. Take Noah A. Smith (one of the authors), his lifetime Google Scholar citation count is a very respectable 19938 (as of 3/25/2020) and he is with the Allen Institute for AI.
[1907.10597] Green AI: The computations required for deep learning research have been doubling every
few months, resulting in an estimated 300,000x increase from 2012 to 2018 [2].
These computations have a surprisingly large carbon footprint [38]. Ironically,
deep learning was inspired by the human brain, which is remarkably energy
efficient. Moreover, the financial cost of the computations can make it
difficult for academics, students, and researchers, in particular those from
emerging economies, to engage in deep learning research.
This position paper advocates a practical solution by making efficiency an
evaluation criterion for research alongside accuracy and related measures. In
addition, we propose reporting the financial cost or "price tag" of developing,
training, and running models to provide baselines for the investigation of
increasingly efficient methods. Our goal is to make AI both greener and more
inclusive---enabling any inspired undergraduate with a laptop to write
high-quality research papers. Green AI is an emerging focus at the Allen
Institute for AI.

addition, we propose reporting the financial cost or "price tag" of developing,
training, and running models to provide baselines for the investigation of
increasingly efficient methods. Our goal is to make AI both greener and more
inclusive---enabling any inspired undergraduate with a laptop to write
high-quality research papers. Green AI is an emerging focus at the Allen

Israeli firm Nanox aims to disrupt mammograms and other X-rays
Good news! Will this machine become part of our annual health checkup?
"the Nanox.Arc could provide a full-body digital X-ray scan down to the cellular level. “Because it’s digital, it’s multispectral. You don’t need different machines to do different kinds of imaging,” ... That includes mammography, CT, fluoroscopy and angiography, for instance. ...
Nanox.Arc’s companion software, Nanox.Cloud, will be a cloud-based repository for all the imaging data.

Paper Sheds Light on Infant Universe and Origin of Matter
The Institute for Advanced Study and the researchers refers to it as axiogenesis! We will find out whether this latest subatomic particle QCD axion will live up to its extensive expectations! This miracle particle is supposed to explain a lot of stuff!
"... the QCD axion was originally proposed to explain the so-called strong CP problem—why the strong force, which binds protons and neutrons together, unexpectedly preserves a symmetry called the Charge Parity (CP) symmetry. ... Kinetic energy, resulting from the motion of the QCD axion, produced additional baryons or ordinary matter. Vladimir Putin’s Encirclement Of Europe
Recommendable! It is a particular dim outlook on the defensive capabilities and the strategic disunity of the European Union/NATO.
The article does not touch upon e.g. Russia's latest efforts in weapons development like hypersonic missiles.
"Russian propaganda, going back to czarist and Soviet times, often claims that Western powers are encircling Russia, forcing Moscow to be belligerent against its wishes. ... The claim of encirclement serves well to justify Putin’s neo-imperial policies. Russia’s wars in Georgia (in 2008) and in Ukraine (ongoing since 2014), its support for Bashar al-Assad in Syria, and the various forms of political warfare it carries out in Europe and the United States are considered responses to a consistent Western offensive. ... Along Europe’s eastern frontier, from the Baltic to the Black Sea, Russia has a sizeable military presence and has demonstrated its willingness to invade and control territories (e.g., South Ossetia in Georgia; Crimea and eastern Ukraine). It has entrenched itself in Syria in order to buttress Assad, returning to a position of influence in the Middle East that it has not held since the late 1970s. It has developed a partnership of sorts with Erdogan’s Turkey, convincing it to buy S-400 air-defense systems and thereby making that country an ever less reliable U.S. ally. It has built or upgraded seven military bases in the Arctic region, gaining control of one of the key shipping arteries between Europe and Asia, estimated to be 40 percent faster than shipping through the Suez Canal. In a surprising show of force in late 2019, Russia surged ten submarines into the North Atlantic, demonstrating a capability that had been dormant since the late Cold War. And in recent months it has increased its engagement in the messy war in Libya, becoming a key player in direct competition with Turkey in the political dynamics of this Mediterranean area. ... European security is increasingly at the mercy of Russia, and not just along the tense but geographically limited Central European frontier that historically separated the core of Europe from Moscow’s westward imperial aspirations. ... To deal with such a geopolitical encirclement, European states are adopting increasingly separate policies. ... “normalize relations.” ... keeping energy deals with Moscow alive while not wanting to follow the openly pro-Russian approach ... two European powers ... together with Moscow supports the opposing side in the Libyan war while [other European powers] are behind the U.N.-approved government. ... The Central European EU and NATO members are at best perplexed and at worst deeply worried by their Western allies’ friendly overtures toward Russia. And this is just one aspect, centered on Russia, of the various intra-European rifts. ... There are no European solutions to these growing divisions. The European Union is a complex but fragile and inefficient political construction that, in a geopolitical competition with a risk-taking imperial Russia seeking to expand its influence over the European continent, is incapable of achieving strategic coherence among its members. ... aimed at increasing intra-EU military cooperation and development. But these efforts often give the impression that the EU is seeking “strategic autonomy” from the United States rather than addressing the security threats around its frontiers. ... Moreover, no matter how many new coordinating efforts are launched by the EU or even NATO, the hard truth is that only a few European states are willing to take security seriously, devoting the necessary resources and mustering the national will to compete with Russia. The military capabilities of most European states remain atrophied. ... A strong, coherent Europe, even if suffused with anti-American sentiment, would be preferable to the current situation of a weak Europe appeasing Russia and allowing Chinese economic penetration. The former could conceivably maintain repose on the Continent and prevent further Russian encirclement. A Europe that protects itself and radiates stability would be a welcome geopolitical development. But there are no signs that this will happen. Europe cannot find strategic unity from within. The EU-driven push toward “strategic autonomy” derives less from a shared threat assessment than from an aversion to the United States as the protector of the West, combined with a particular disdain toward the Trump administration."

On The Past, Present And Future Of Wahhabism
Very recommendable!
" ... [In the mid-18th century] Wahhabis were not just declaring takfir (excommunication) on people but were also fighting them as part of a jihad. ... In all phases of his preaching, however, he was insistent that true believers must show hatred and enmity to non-Wahhabi Muslims. ... When Wahhabism began, its adherents dismissed the vast majority of nominal Muslims as polytheists. This is because they were seen to be worshiping at the grave sites of saints and prophets. It was a duty for Wahhabis to pronounce takfir on these so-called polytheists and to show them enmity and hatred. ... For more than 150 years, Wahhabism was perceived by most of the world’s Muslims as a radical heresy. Only in the early 20th century did the Wahhabis come to an accommodation with mainstream Sunni Islam. ... The first Saudi state, which reigned in the first 60 years of the 18th century, adhered to militant Wahhabi doctrine. The second Saudi state maintained this identity in the 19th century. The third Saudi state, which was established in 1902 by King Abdulaziz Al Saud [Ibn Saud], began as a militant Wahhabi state but gradually shed this character. Ibn Saud deployed Wahhabi warriors to conquer the Arabian Peninsula in the first decades of his rule, but he later fought a war against the most radical of these militants. The kind of Wahhabism that prevailed thereafter was more restrained and subdued.
The Saudi leadership’s support for this kind of Wahhabism continued until just a few years ago, when Mohammad bin Salman (MbS), the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, started more forcefully to put Wahhabi clerics in their place. MbS’s vision is to create a Saudi Arabia less wedded to the religious establishment. ... For anyone who subscribes to Wahhabism, Shiism is a horrible polytheist heresy that ought to be eradicated. Anti-Shiism is endemic in Wahhabism. For today’s jihadis, as for traditional Wahhabis, Shiism is a much greater threat to true Islam than Christianity, Judaism, or the values of the West in general."

Seismic imaging technology sees deep inside the brain
Amazing stuff! Could this be a breakthrough in brain imaging? Three-dimensional ultrasound tomography is highly mobile, easily repeatable, and can be used for continuous monitoring of the brain!
"In a new study, [researchers] turned to a computational technique known as full-waveform inversion (FWI), which is used by geophysicists to extract three-dimensional images of the Earth’s subsurface from data collected by seismometers on the passage of waves underground. A nonlinear data-fitting procedure, FWI works by using real-world seismic data to create a rough model of subsurface conditions from which wave equations can be solved to produce mock data. The model is then iteratively improved until this output provides the best fit for the real-world data.
Instead ... the researchers ... envisage using a helmet-like mesh of 1024 ultrasound transceivers. ... This is the first time FWI has been applied to the task of imaging inside a human skull"
Contrast this with the two leading current imaging technologies:
"Both of the leading conventional techniques for performing imaging on the brain come with inherent limitations. MR imaging is unsuitable for use on patients who have – or are suspected could have – metallic implants or harbour foreign bodies. It is also impractical for use on severely obese, claustrophobic or uncooperative patients. X-ray CT, meanwhile, involves exposure to harmful ionizing radiation, ruling out its use with young patients or for continuous monitoring. Both modalities also require large, expensive, high-powered machines that cannot practically be set up outside of hospital or laboratory settings."

Recommendable! The article mentions a publication by Keynes, which I do not remember at all, i.e. "Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren" and claims that it "ranks among the best-known contributions in the economic writings of John Maynard Keynes". The latter, I seriously doubt!
That JMK was a proponent of government birth and population control is not a new claim! Apparently, birth and population control was very popular among Western intellectuals until the Third Reich!
The article does not mention that J. M. Keynes was a known homosexual, which may have also contributed to his sometimes extreme views!

Boris Johnson announced that the UK will go into lockdown from this evening onwards
Very unfortunate that the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is loosing his cool over this panic and hysteria! Very disappointing Boris Johnson!
Where are the voices of reason hiding?
The historic British common sense expressed by such famous phrases as "Keep calm and carry on" is becoming a distant shadow of its former self! Very regrettable! Signs of our times!
This panic and hysteria is inexcusable e.g. when during this influenza season alone many more thousands have been hospitalized and have died already!

However, like weather forecast models cannot predict weather more than 48 hours in advance with any accuracy, climate models cannot predict climate over decades or let alone for 100 years! Weather models and climate models are very similar in their size, complexity, and science involved!
Our understanding of climate is still very incomplete! Thus, these modeling attempts are at best guesses and should be treated as such! We still know very little about the sun, cloud formation, ocean currents and biology and much more ...
Since too many climate scientist involved in the climate modeling are too biased, the output of these models reflect that!
Climate scientists try to dazzle us with pompous terms like equilibrium climate sensitivity! In reality, ECS is more baloney than anything else!
"... Researchers are currently looking into what is driving these high ECS values. In a number of models the increase in ECS appears to be due to their improved representation of clouds and aerosols; for example, how models treat supercooled clouds (below freezing but still liquid) in the Southern oceans can make a big difference in resulting sensitivity. ... However, despite making the models more realistic, it is not yet clear whether these improvements are translating into more accurate estimates of ECS."
CMIP6: the next generation of climate models explained | Carbon Brief: Climate models are one of the primary means for scientists to understand how the climate has changed in the past and may change in the future. These models simulate the physics, chemistry and biology of the atmosphere, land and oceans in great detail, and require some of the largest supercomputers in the world to generate their climate projections.

Princeton scientists discover surprising quantum effect in an exotic superconductor
Amazing stuff (dated Nov. 2019)! Are we coming any closer to a room temperature superconductor?
"The researchers probed the behavior of iron-based superconductors when impurities – namely atoms of cobalt – are added to explore how superconductivity forms and dissipates. Their findings led to new insights into a 60-year old theory of how superconductivity behaves. ... Cobalt appears to be one of these exceptions. Contrary to the theory, the addition of cobalt forces the iron-based superconductor to lose its superconducting ability and become like an ordinary metal ... discovered that each cobalt atom has a limited local impact that vanishes an atom or two in distance away from the impurity. However, there is a strong, systematic evolution through a phase transition into a normal, non-superconducting state as the cobalt concentration increases. ... "

Good news (but dated from Nov. 2019)!
"... the researchers incorporated another classification approach whereby a deep learning algorithm extracts and analyzes the spatial-temporal features of the patient’s brain activity from different electrode locations, boosting the accuracy of their model. And finally, EEG readings can involve multiple “channels” of electrical activity, ... applied an additional algorithm to identify the most appropriate predictive channels of electrical activity; this also speeds up the prediction process. ... With the software component complete, ... the next step is to develop a customized computer chip to process the algorithm"

APOE Mutation Linked to Protection From Alzheimer's: Case Study
Good news (but dated from Nov. 2019)! Apparently, a woman in Colombia, who died in her 70s, had basically two opposing mutations. One of her mutations should have caused early onset of Alzheimers at around age 40, but she did not develop Alzheimer until her death due to a kind of offsetting, simultaneous mutation that protected her.
"The woman at the center of the study possesses a mutant version of PSEN1, a gene coding for a protein involved in processing amyloid precursor protein (APP) and other peptides. The variant is strongly associated with early-onset Alzheimer’s, with people showing signs of cognitive impairment by their mid-40s, and dementia by the time they’re 50. ... Using brain imaging, researchers found that the woman had extremely high levels of amyloid in her brain by the time she reached 70. However, she had little in the way of other signs of Alzheimer’s pathology, such as neurodegeneration or an accumulation of tau protein.
“It actually illustrates ... for the first time, a very clear dissociation of amyloid accumulation from tau pathology, ... she possessed two copies of a rare mutation in APOE, another gene associated with Alzheimer’s risk. ... using in vitro experiments that the sequence, known in the scientific literature as the Christchurch variant, stops the protein product of the gene from binding strongly to its usual targets—sugar molecules involved in the accumulation of tau and neuron damage—and could thus have had a protective effect. "

Batterieforschung: Lithium für den Superakku
Good news!

Climate change: evidence and causes By The Royal Society
The world famous Royal Society is a purveyor of the Global Warming hoax!
Many of the famous fellows of this society are probably spinning in their graves. E.g. Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Michael Faraday, Ernest Rutherford, Srinivasa Ramanujan, Albert Einstein and many others!
Just take the first two sentences:
"The Sun serves as the primary energy source for Earth’s climate. Some of the incoming sunlight is reflected directly back into space, especially by bright surfaces such as ice and clouds, and the rest is absorbed by the surface and the atmosphere."
The Royal Society wants us to believe that we know everything about the sun and that the sun and its radiation never changes! Both is total nonsense!
