How a marine heat wave led to unprecedented seabird deaths

Junk science accompanied by junk science journalism! What a match made in heaven! Scaremongering & demagoguery disguised as science!

"These reports came hot on the heels of the largest and most powerful marine heat wave ever recorded: the Blob."
Cheap and contemptible sensationalism! Recorded since when? Let me guess not earlier than 1950 or later! We still now so little about what goes on in our oceans!

How a marine heat wave led to unprecedented seabird deaths | Science News: Scientists have linked thousands of dead common murres in 2015–2016 to food web changes caused by a long-lasting marine heat wave nicknamed the Blob.

"Die-offs and breeding failures occur sporadically in murres, but the magnitude, duration and spatial extent of this die-off, associated with multi-colony and multi-year reproductive failures, is unprecedented and astonishing."

Even the scientists engage in cheap and irresponsible sensationalism! What the heck do these scientists actually know about such events!
See reference no. 10 in the paper below. It appears to be the major source for historical temperature data. I had no time to go through the entire reference no 10, but my hunch is that the earliest measurements to not go further back than about 1984 (see footnote 6 of ref. no. 10) and this is only for the coast of California.
