It has been known for a long time that surgeons are not considered quite as respectable as other physicians Actually, other physicians tend to look down on their surgeon colleagues. However, a good reason for this has eluded me for a long time. Of course, with modern surgery procedures like non invasive surgical procedures like endoscopic surgery the prejudices of the past may have gone away. Then there is robotic assisted surgery, another recent advance!
Originally, it appears that historically the profession of surgeons emerged from barbers, indeed a very old knife wielding profession with special skills.
