Update: "The fate of another American the U.S. considers wrongfully detained in Russia, Paul Whelan, remains uncertain. The former Marine and corporate security executive has been held since late 2018. He received a 16-year sentence for espionage charges, which he has denied." (Source: Wall Street Journal)
Was not more important or had a greater priority to get this prisoner swapped first or both prisoners swapped?

This seems to be another bad decision by the demented and senile 46th President as the Russian war of aggression still rages on in the Ukraine!
To do the LGBTQ cult a favor, he released a Russian merchant of death, who had still about 15 years of prison time left for a foolish young Lesbian woman, who tried to make extra money in Russia by playing basketball during off season.
If I am not totally mistaken, then merchants of death rarely get indicted. To arrest Mr. Bout in a sting operation in Thailand this one has taken extraordinary effort on part of the U.S. and Thailand.
It appears that Ms. Griner (I blogged here, here about her) was intentionally targeted by Putin the Terrible perhaps to facilitate exactly this kind of prisoner swap. She started her prison sentence in Russia only in August of 2022. Thus, there was no hurry here!
If you are truly a conspiracy theorist, you would even assume that Ms. Griner accepted and was paid for by Putin the Terrible to be trapped in expectation of a quick prisoner swap or some diplomatic solution.
