I believe I was introduced to John Milton by writings of Friedrich von Hayek.
He was perhaps the first modern British secretary of state or foreign minister in the interregnum government of Oliver Cromwell. In Florence, he met and was influenced by then blind and old Galileo Galilei.
As a wordsmith, he has been compared to Shakespeare. He shattered the then predominant narrow and restricted conventions of poetry.
