Sehr empfehlenswert!

Very recommendable! Features a lot of important details I have not known before!

Prosthetic arm enables patients to feel the objects they grip
Good news! Amazing stuff! Unfortunately, progress in prosthetics is not fast enough!
" ... Then three years ago, Normark received a new kind of brain-controlled prosthetic that was surgically attached to the bone, muscles, and nerves of his upper arm, allowing him to not only grip objects intuitively with his hand but feel the sensation of touching them. ... For one, all electronics are contained within the prosthesis, which removes the need for external equipment, such as wires, electrodes, or batteries. The prosthetic hand is controlled using electrodes implanted in the muscles of the upper arm, to which nerves involved in opening and closing the hand have been rerouted. Second, force sensors embedded in the thumb of the hand provide sensory feedback while grasping objects. Those signals are relayed through wires connected to nerves in the upper arm, and then to the brain, where they are perceived as pressure against the hand. ..."
Prosthetic arm enables patients to feel the objects they grip - STAT: The prosthetic arm represents an advance over other mind-controlled bionic limbs under development, the researchers said.
Mind-controlled prostheses that “feel” for real For the first time, people with arm amputations can experience sensations of touch in a mind-controlled arm prosthesis that they use in everyday life. Three Swedish patients have lived, for several years, with this new technology – one of the world’s most integrated interfaces between human and machine.

Google Drive API Annoyances
Posted: 4/30/2020
For some time, I had the idea to use Python to automate some of my file management tasks regarding my Google Drive account.
However, I quickly realized that Google opted for overkill and to overcomplicate programmatic access to the Google Drive API. You have to choose between two forms of authentication, multiple roles, access scopes, and permissions etc. Just mind boggling!
There is a Python project called PyDrive ("PyDrive is a wrapper library of google-api-python-client that simplifies many common Google Drive API tasks."), but it appears to be inactive or even abandoned since October 2016. Apparently, this project was not sponsored by Google.
If you have a whole IT department to do the work for you, you may succeed!

The Myth that Americans Were Poorly Educated before Mass Government Schooling
Very recommendable! That the American citizens allowed government to almost monopolize the education of their children has been a terrible mistake for over 120 years or more! The Founders are spinning in their graves!
The situation in Western European countries is not better!
The Myth that Americans Were Poorly Educated before Mass Government Schooling - Foundation for Economic Education: When I think of the many ways that government deceives us into its embrace, one in particular really stands out: It seeks to convince us how helpless we would be without it. It tells us we can’t do this, we can’t do that, that government possesses magical powers beyond those of mere mortals and that yes, we’d be dumb as dirt and as destitute as drifters if we didn’t put it in charge of one thing or another.

Our Dress Rehearsal for a Police State
Recommendable! Sometimes Dennis Prager is spot on! In this piece, Dennis Prager appears to be more outspoken and direct than usual! Indeed, facing a pandemic caused by a fairly harmless virus police states emerged in many Western countries to shut down much of the economy and to quarantine its citizens! This lesson should not be lossed on anyone!

The Federal Reserve Is Changing What It Means to Be a Central Bank
This is cause for grave concern! Since at least Alan Greenspan, the Fed has pursued this reckless and irresponsible low interest rate policy. Since the financial crisis of 2008, the Fed has expanded its balance sheet by several multiples to now $6.5 trillion dollars total assets up from under $0.9 trillion in 2007.

Earth’s Last Frontier the Oceans
It is actually quite incredible how little we humans still know of what is going on under the surface of the oceans. This fact alone suggests that Global Warming (aka as Climate Change) is the biggest hoax in generations! I apologize that this is an older article dating to 2016, but the article is not outdated. I got to know about it, because it was apparently recently recycled.

Up to 43% of Covid-19 Cases are Asymptomatic
More evidence is coming to light that the SARS-Cov-2 virus is indeed fairly harmless and not much worse than the flu! The mass panic and hysteria fueled by politicians and medical profession was reckless and irresponsible!
It has been reported since about mid February or so that the percentage of asymptotic Covid-19 cases is about 18-20% (e.g. here).
The below epidemiological study also questions the infectiousness of Covid-19! It is probably also significantly lower than widely reported!
Suppression of COVID-19 outbreak in the municipality of Vo, Italy | medRxiv: On the 21st of February 2020 a resident of the municipality of Vo, a small town near Padua, died of pneumonia due to SARS-CoV-2 infection. This was the first COVID-19 death detected in Italy since the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 in the Chinese city of Wuhan, Hubei province. In response, the regional authorities imposed the lockdown of the whole municipality for 14 days. We collected information on the demography, clinical presentation, hospitalization, contact network and presence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in nasopharyngeal swabs for 85.9% and 71.5% of the population of Vo at two consecutive time points. On the first survey, which was conducted around the time the town lockdown started, we found a prevalence of infection of 2.6% (95% confidence interval (CI) 2.1-3.3%). On the second survey, which was conducted at the end of the lockdown, we found a prevalence of 1.2% (95% CI 0.8-1.8%). Notably, 43.2% (95% CI 32.2-54.7%) of the confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections detected across the two surveys were asymptomatic. The mean serial interval was 6.9 days (95% CI 2.6-13.4). The two doctors only stated the obvious that has been known roughly since the outbreak of Covid-19. The draconian use of emergency powers employed by many Western governments shutting down entire economies was totally unwarranted in the face of a fairly harmless virus! Who is to blame? Gullible, common sense lacking politicians and public health officials who tremendously exaggerated the dangers!

Have you signed the petition already? Please do!
I do not sign many petitions, but this one is important and justified!
Not long ago, I blogged here about this guy! It is beyond belief how the Western countries were so asleep behind the switch when this man was nominated and chosen to become director general of the WHO!

The Pandemic Of Flawed Computer Models
Like the Global Warming Hoax (aka Climate Change), the assessment of the recent COVID-19 pandemic is largely guided by state of the art computer modelling. Unfortunately, this computer modeling turns out to be highly unreliable when it comes to complex phenomena like climate or pandemics! Unreliable weather forecasting more than 24 hours ahead is another prominent example! Not to mention the biases, human weaknesses (e.g. preference for worst case), and perverse incentives (e.g. more shock, more money) of those involved and driving the modeling!
The article below also points out that the way recent deaths are coded for recording may also be deeply flawed.
" ... In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the federal government has been heavily influenced by the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation’s computer model, which has projected from 60,000 to 240,000 COVID-19 deaths in the U.S.
This epidemiological model is now being criticized as flawed and misleading as a source of public information and for government decision-making. ... "

Let’s not double-down on the nanny state in Canada
Recommendable!
"Hard times make strong people, the saying goes, but it didn’t work out that way for the Brits. Victorious but beaten to within a hair of its life from six years of war with Hitler, the United Kingdom opted for socialism. In a landslide election following victory in Europe in 1945, voters threw out Winston Churchill in favour of Labour Leader Clement Attlee who proceeded to create the British welfare state. After sacrificing everything to protect their freedom, voters chose a government that promised to look after them. Except for the period under Margaret Thatcher, who tried to turn the ship around, the U.K. has been on the road to serfdom ever since."
What happened in the UK immediately after WW II is indeed very peculiar and absolutely horrifying! To this day, the UK is stuck with a socialized national healthcare.
" ... In Canada, the administrative state is now ubiquitous. It regulates haircuts, dog food, cheese and mattresses. It taxes and subsidizes, plans and incentivizes, licenses and inspects. Over time, we have become more like China than China has become like us. ... "

Has the coronavirus finally taught us how to listen to science?
This is the headline of an op-ed in the Boston Globe written by none other than the president of MIT! The VP of Research is not far behind her boss! It is most incredible how people at the top of this prestigious, world renowned university are so foolish and silly!
"The coronavirus pandemic contains an encouraging surprise. If we can take the right lessons from the crisis, we will find ourselves better prepared to tackle the health of our fevered planet. The first lesson is that our deepest well of practical hope is in science and the people who practice it. ... we must actively build on this implicit respect for the power of science ... We and the Earth are now well on our way to living out that prediction, with carbon dioxide concentrations already about 50 percent higher than in the preindustrial era. Decades of further research and increasingly dire warnings have inspired some societal action — but nowhere near enough. ... But I hope instead that we can channel all our energy into teaching ourselves, as a society, to finally begin listening to planetary warnings the way we listen in an emergency. ..."
Such uncritical worship of science is strange at best! The president of MIT tries to fool the public with such propaganda as CO2 concentration already about 50 percent higher than in the preindustrial era! He is talking about 400 parts per million versus 200 concentration and these are usually measured only in one place Mauna Loa, Hawaii. This MIT president sounds more like a quack or self anointed prophet of a religious sect than a scientist!
Has the coronavirus finally taught us how to listen to science? | MIT Office of the President: L. Rafael Reif has served as the 17th President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) since July 2012.
"Climate change is a very personal issue to Maria Zuber, MIT’s vice president for research. A native of eastern Pennsylvania, she watched her grandfathers, both coal miners, battle black-lung disease. “The burning of anthracite coal drove my community and was a central part of my childhood,” says Zuber. “Yet it’s been known since the 1800s that combustion of fossil fuels puts CO2 into the atmosphere, and that the effects can be damaging.”"
How somebody so stupid can be VP of Research at MIT is beyond pale!
Maria Zuber on climate change: “Breakthroughs will happen” | MIT News: Maria Zuber, MIT’s vice president for research, identifies three areas that show particular promise for climate action: battery technology, renewable energy, and fusion. “Breakthroughs will happen,” she says.

26 million have sought US jobless aid since coronavirus hit
Madness in numbers! The total labor force of the U.S. is 165 million and total employment about 131 million. This all because of a virus that is not much more dangerous than influenza! The power of medieval superstition in the 20th year of the 21 century! When herd mentality, mass panic and hysteria take over!
26 million have sought US jobless aid since coronavirus hit: More than 4.4 million laid-off workers applied for U.S. unemployment benefits last week as job cuts escalated across an economy that remains all but shut down, the government said Thursday.

How does coronavirus kill? Clinicians trace a ferocious rampage through the body, from brain to toes
Incredibly sensationalist and way over the top journalism produced by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)! This is tabloid journalism!

Some of this is just too laughable! E.g. is not the overreacting immune system in some patients?
" ... how the virus attacks cells around the body, especially in the roughly 5% of patients who become critically ill. ... Some clinicians suspect the driving force in many gravely ill patients’ downhill trajectories is a disastrous overreaction of the immune system known as a “cytokine storm,” which other viral infections are known to trigger."
What is it now! And remember 95% of all infected become only mildly ill or not ill at all!

Attacking climate change, one human story at a time
Even the prestigious MIT is a purveyor of propaganda and demagoguery regarding the Global Warming hoax (aka climate change). This is indoctrination and brain washing! As a student, I would ask for a refund of my tuition!
"“I want them to have the power to use media to express something about how they feel,” Paradis [James Paradis, the Robert M. Metcalfe Professor of Writing and Comparative Media Studies] says. “I’m trying to open up a space for students to express their own ideas about global warming.” ... Paradis says that the course is also meant to offer a practical outlet for the eco-anxiety many within the MIT community feel as the climate continues to warm."
Here the opinion of a fully indoctrinated engineering student: "“I find myself now being able to actually engage in talking with other people about this climate crisis,” she says. “I’m confident that I know enough to start talking about it and not feel ignorant about this issue.”"

Hong Kong and Taiwan: Two Davids Facing a Chinese Goliath
It took only one David to slay Goliath! These two Davids can take on the Communist Party of China! Will Western countries be ready to support and stand by?
" ... described Taiwan and Hong Kong as two places “strangely uninterested in each other” ... The mutual disinterest, however, is starting to change. At the Oslo Freedom Forum’s satellite Taipei human rights event in September 2019, organizers programmed a segment where Hong Kong pop star and activist Denise Ho took the stage with musician and legislator Freddy Lim, a founder of Taiwan’s pro-independence New Power Party. “Watching the struggle of the people of Hong Kong, how can we give up on ours?” asked Freddy Lim, as he thanked protesters in Hong Kong, pitching their fight not only as one between the territory and the Communist Party of China but as one between authoritarian China’s rising influence and its inevitable clash with the global free world. Denise Ho further exhorted, “Taiwan, protect your democracy and human rights.” The moment was one of the clearest displays of an emerging Taiwanese solidarity for the Hong Kong movement, and one of the strongest expressions of regard for Taiwan’s democracy in aspirational terms from the perspective of Hong Kong protesters."

Taiwan Becomes More than a Tourist Destination for Hong Kong as Beijing Tightens Grip
If confirmed, this is another blow to the Communist Party of China!
"The political and business environments in Hong Kong are deteriorating further as Beijing tightens its grip over the Special Administration Regions (SAR), once the poster child for business innovation and economic vibrancy. Local startups are increasingly looking outside the territory for expanding business opportunities. In a recent poll conducted by a Hong Kong organization, Taiwan has emerged as the top choice for local startup businesses looking for expansion opportunities. Indeed, amid Beijing’s suppression of Hong Kong’s political space, many business enterprises are looking at Taiwan and Southeast Asia as their top two destinations of choice."

Earth’s atmosphere far dustier than previously believed
More evidence that Global Warming (aka Climate Change) is a hoax! State of the art climate models belong in the dustbin of history!
"Dust is a key component [like clouds] of Earth’s climate system. When it interacts with clouds, oceans and the sun’s radiation, it has an overall impact on our planet’s living systems, affecting everything from weather and rainfall to global warming. ... Now, UCLA scientists report that there is four times the amount of coarse dust in Earth’s atmosphere than is currently simulated by climate models. Their findings appear in the journal Science Advances.
The researchers found that Earth’s atmosphere contains 17 million metric tons of coarse dust ... "
"By plugging this amount of missing coarse dust into models ... it increases the likelihood that the net amount of dust overall — both fine and coarse — is warming rather than cooling the Earth’s climate system, from air to oceans."
Given the heavy cognitive and confirmation bias of these researchers it had to come out that way!

Anti-lockdown protests on the rise across U.S.
Keep protesting! You have my support! The shutdown of the economy and the quarantine of people was a grave mistake in the face of a fairly harmless virus!
Did Human Evolution Include a Semi-Aquatic Phase?
Very recommendable! Sounds almost fantastic like wild speculation! Food for thought! I am not an expert enough to make a judgment on the soundness of the presented arguments. Perhaps, fishing in water as a source of food was at some point way back in time beneficial and an advantage compared to other hominids.
" ... But in 1960, a different twist on human evolution emerged. That year, marine biologist Sir Alister Hardy wrote an article in New Scientist suggesting a possible aquatic phase in our evolution, noting Homo sapiens’s differences from other primates and similarities to other aquatic and semi-aquatic mammals. In 1967, zoologist Desmond Morris published The Naked Ape, which explored different theories about why modern humans lost their fur. Morris mentioned Hardy’s “aquatic ape” hypothesis as an “ingenious” theory that sufficiently explained “why we are so nimble in the water today and why our closest living relatives, the chimpanzees, are so helpless and quickly drown.” ... In 1992, I published a paper describing a curious ear condition colloquially known as “surfer’s ear,” which I and other ear, nose, and throat doctors frequently see in clinics. Exostoses [of the external auditory canal] are small bones that grow in the outer ear canal, but only in humans who swim and dive on a regular, almost daily basis. In modern humans, there is undisputed evidence of aural exostoses in people who swim and dive, with the size and extent being directly dependent on the frequency and length of exposure to water, as well as its temperature. ... Researchers have now found these features in 1 million– to 2 million–year-old hominin skulls. In a recent study on nearly two dozen Neanderthal skulls, about 47 percent had exostoses. ... Other Homo sapiens–specific features that may be tied to a semi-aquatic stage of human evolution include erect posture, loss of body hair, deposition of subcutaneous fat, a completely different heat-regulation system from other primates, and kidneys that function much like those of aquatic mammals. This combination of characteristics, which do not exist in any other terrestrial mammal, would have gradually arisen over several million years."

Aural exostoses (surfer's ear) provide vital fossil evidence of an aquatic phase in Man's early evolution.

Netanyahu and Gantz sign agreement for 'national emergency government' that keeps Netanyahu as prime minister for now
Good news! Will this finally be the end of uncertainty about a functioning government in Israel after one year of struggle and three national elections? I don't know too much about the details or the back and forth, but it appears to me that Benny Gantz (distinguished military career) demonstrated once more to be a statesman of high caliber!

The Thin Façade of Authority By Victor Davis Hanson
Very recommendable article by Victor Davis Hanson! Great attack on the hubris and pretense of knowledge of the educated elite! "Warped Arguments Wrapped in Authority" Well said!
"One, and the most renowned [lessons], is a specialization in education that results in titled degrees and presumed authority. That ensuing prestige, in turn, dictates the decisions of most politicians, the media, and public officials—who for the most part share the values and confidence of the credentialed elite. ... It is no exaggeration to say that most models that the best and brightest offered the public, from the imported Imperial College in London to those from the University of Washington and many more besides, were not just inaccurate, but quite mistaken in two tragic ways: First, they were accepted as gospel by governments and thus their flawed assumptions became the basis for policies that in many cases may prove counterproductive. Second, the modelers themselves either did not promptly correct their warped inputs, or were not completely forthcoming about their data and methodologies, or blamed their flawed assumptions on others or circumstances beyond imagination, or claimed that their mistakes were in fact salutary—if not sorta, kinda planned ... Sometime in the late 19th century, the wide-scale growth of graduate education, professional schooling, and the formal granting of a M.D., Ph.D., or J.D. were necessary antidotes to quackery and the dangers of autodidactic expertise masquerading as the product of the scientific method. But in the last two centuries, that notion of argument from authority has metamorphosed into a religion, a faith-based discipline. ... Our modelers constantly downsize their bleak prognostications as “data changes” as if one should ever publish such Armageddon scenarios when they had insufficient information. More worrisome, are post facto claims that such mistakes might have been salutary. ... Degrees no longer necessarily reflect merit, at least as it once was calibrated by a university’s or a public agency’s own standards. Over 20 years ago, one could read any scholarly journal in the social sciences or humanities—and today even their scientific counterparts—and learn how social justice, identity politics, and political activism had warped science and data-driven analyses. The erosion infected everything from studies of global warming to illegal immigration to the role of the “Other” in ancient societies. It was as if letters behind one’s name allowed authors to massage data and argumentation for the higher purposes of egalitarianism and contemporary social justice.
Every young scholar is now faced with the dilemma of writing the truth as the evidence compels him to do, or venturing into weaponized speculation that is far more likely to win him peer approbation and career enhancement, even as it insidiously bankrupts his discipline. ... "

Zipline Wants to Bring Medical Drone Delivery to U.S. to Fight COVID-19
Good news! How African countries jump ahead in technological innovation!
"A year ago, we visited Rwanda to see how Zipline’s autonomous, fixed-wing delivery drones were providing blood to hospitals and clinics across the country. We were impressed with both Zipline’s system design (involving dramatic catapult launches, parachute drops, and mid-air drone catching), as well as their model of operations, which minimizes waste while making critical supplies available in minutes almost anywhere in the country."

Virologin Karin Mölling: «Wir kommen bisher glimpflich davon»
