Microbial signatures in blood may offer new path for cancer liquid biopsies

Excellent news! Very promising! Will frequent and comprehensive cancer screening become reality! Cancer is history!

"New era for cancer diagnostics? Machine learning models were able to identify and distinguish between cancers based on microbial signatures found in the blood, according early-stage research from the University of California, San Diego." (Source)

"Now, new research raises the possibility that liquid biopsies could be used to spot cancer in a totally different way: by hunting for the DNA of bacteria and viruses released from tumors into the bloodstream. ... To develop their new method, Knight and his collaborators began by looking at sequencing data from more than 18,000 tumor samples covering 33 different types of cancer from The Cancer Genome Atlas"

"In addition, we could discriminate among samples from healthy, cancer-free individuals (n = 69) and those from patients with multiple types of cancer (prostate, lung, and melanoma; 100 samples in total) solely using plasma-derived, cell-free microbial nucleic acids. "
