Some U.S. presidents became famous for wielding frequently their veto power like President Cleveland. President Trump is on his way to go down in history as a rescission requesting president.
Most recently, he proposed to slash up to $4 billion from the foreign aid budget. “The Trump administration is set to present a “rescissions” package for the State Department this week that it says would save $4 billion in foreign assistance.” (S1). Trump correctly says this will reduce waste and abuse, but immediately dimocratic and republican members of the U.S. Congress protested.
As I wrote in an earlier blog: “President Trump’s rescission request in May 2018 to the U.S. Congress of $15.4 billion”.
“The rescission process was instituted by the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974. Between 1974 and 2000, presidents submitted 1178 rescission proposals totaling $76 billion, of which Congress accepted 461 totaling $25 billion.” (S2). Since the year 2000, no president has submitted any rescission bills until President Trump!
President Trump is doing the right thing! Cut federal government spending wherever and whenever possible!
