Trigger
Just read “More than a third of American workers don’t get sick leave, and they’re making the rest of us ill” published by the Washington Post.
The socialist U.S. President Obama just had another great idea “proposing legislation that would give American workers 7 days a year of paid sick leave.”
This is again an unfortunate recourse to big government inflexible, one size fits all solutions that put big government in control!
Utterly Unconstitutional
It’s a violation of property rights! It is a form of government expropriation and price controls.
Why do employers have to pay for no work? Do employers cause the sickness of their employees?
Alternative 1: Government Program
Why e.g. do not taxpayers pay for this via government programs? This would be lot fairer!
This would be a lot more transparent when the expenses for such a government program would have to be budgeted so that all citizens know what paid sick leave costs and all taxpayers would pay for it not just employers with a minimum of x employees. Our elected legislators would have to justify how they are spending our tax payments.
Alternative 2: Private Insurance
In a free, market economy insurance companies would offer policies to compensate employees for lost wages/salaries due to sickness if there is demand for it. This would probably be the best alternative.
Why Are We Still Not Able To Treat Flu Or Cold?
The headline of the above article in the Washington Post suggested that paid sick leave would spare coworkers. What a myopic, self-serving viewpoint.
If government could do something it would be investing more money into research on how to more effectively vaccinate or treat influenza or the common cold.
We have made great progress treating AIDS HIV and so many other diseases, but why not these annoying and superfluous diseases like flu or cold? Well, they are not deadly or severe enough, but they contribute to a huge economic loss and lot’s of inconvenience for many people.
