Frida Kahlo & Leonora Carrington In Mexico City

Posted: 5/4/2020

Yesterday (5/3/2020), I watched this Tate Gallery short documentary about surrealist artist, writer, and sculptor Leonora Carrington. Wow, was I surprised to learn that she lived most of her live in Mexico City and also around the time when artist Frida Kahlo was alive. However, the documentary did not mention a word about Frida Kahlo despite even showing an interview with Ms. Carrington. This is strange!

Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) lived in Mexico since 1942, most likely, in Mexico City until the end of her life in 2011. Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) lived in Mexico City most likely most of her life from her birth in 1907 until her death in 1954.

I cannot imagine that the community of artists living and working in Mexico City (domestic artists and emigrated artists from e.g. Europe) at the time was so large that these two women (both modern surrealist painters) never met! When you peruse these few sources below, you will also discover that these women existed separately from each other.

Googling for this oddity uncovered source no 5: “She [Leonora in Mexico City] also found new artist friends, Remedios Varo and Kati Horna. The three, once described by Frida Kahlo as "those European bitches", became very close, and their children grew up together.” However, this is the only passage in this article linking Kahlo and Carrington.

Source No. 6 mentioned: “ ... (Carrington attended the couple's [Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera] second wedding, and apparently annoyed the great man. "He [Diego Rivera] asked me [Carrington] who I was, and I said 'Leonora Carrington, and who are you?' He said, 'Moctezuma,' so I said, 'Really? I thought you were dead.' He didn't seem to find it funny.") … Kahlo was not much enamoured of these new artistic arrivals – she once called Carrington and her friends "those European bitches", and said she thought them overintellectual. … ”
