For decades We The People in Western countries were deliberately fooled to believe all our children need is a college education to have a better life. The hard choice is, of course, the subject of study! Not all subjects are equally probable for a great career or a well paying career in life.
Thus a highly formalized, lengthy, expensive, cloistered way of education was given high preference of other forms of education, which would have developed in the free, private markets anyway.
Add to this grade inflation, because colleges and universities do not want to let down their high paying students.
The single-minded focus on college education has probably driven many employers to automatically create job descriptions according to and to filter job applicants into two categories those with and those without.
If everyone has a college degree, then what is the distinction for a potential employer?
