Pinkerton Instead Of Secret Service

The USA Has Taken Many Wrong Turns In History Towards Big Government

This is just another glaring example where the U.S. has a long time ago abandoned free markets and individual liberty.

Famous Pinkerton National Detective Agency

The history of the Pinkerton Agency is amazing!

Apparently President-elect and President Lincoln hired this famous Pinkerton Agency for protection of his life (Source1, source2). While it appears that Pinkerton was first hired by the railroad companies “to provide security for the president-elect on his journey to Washington, D.C., through Baltimore.”, Pinkerton appears to be hired by President Lincoln directly. Can you imagine a private business hires protection for the POTUS? Why Pinkerton did not prevent his assassination is another good question?

Only “[a]fter the 1901 assassination of President William McKinley, Congress also directed the Secret Service to protect the President of the United States.” (Source1). Wrong decision!

The Pinkerton Agency is probably one of the few enterprises ever to be specifically singled out by federal statutes, i.e. the Anti-Pinkerton Act of 1893, to prohibit the federal government from hiring the agency’s employees (Source1). The act can be found here. This act is quite amazing! It should be repealed instantly! That this act is still on the books is more than incredible!

Conclusion

So why did the federal government and the U.S. Congress resort to a government agency, i.e. the Secret Service, to protect the President? Why was it not possible to continue to use private enterprises for this purpose?
