Limited government or limited and small government?

With President Trump in his second term this question has garnered new relevance!

As a classical liberal I am all for limited and small government with term limits for all elected representatives!

Unfortunately, since World War II Western democracies have shown a strong tendencies to overregulate, to pass too many laws (and rarely if ever remove obsolete laws), and to concentrated too much power with the central government.

Unfortunately, term limits for elected representatives in Western democracies is a taboo. Only the US President is term limited (there might be some other exceptions).

Devolution of power in Western countries from central to lower levels of government is also long overdue reform!

Nancy Pelosi (D-CA, age 85) says she will not seek reelection. Really!

Maybe she should have come to this conclusion two or more terms ago! She has been nutty and erratic for several years and longer!

She is a prime example why term limits not only for US presidents are so necessary!

Die fehlende Amtszeitbegrenzung für Berufspolitiker in der Legislative ist eine der grössten Schwächen der westlichen Demokratien. Aus langjähriger Erfahrung wissen wir das der Prozess der Herausforderung von Mandatsinhabern oft und meist nur sehr  unzulänglich funktioniert. Daher sind es immer wieder überwiegend dieselben Politiker die zur Wahl/Wiederwahl anstehen.

We need long overdue term limits for all representatives in the US Congress not only for the president. He has been a US Senator for 19 years, before that he was a US Representative for 16 years.

Had such term limits been in place, most like the pathological lifelong and serial liar and politician Joseph Biden would never have become the president of the US!

Term limits or mandatory retirement age for elected politicians and legislators?

Try term limits first! It probably would solve most negative issues related to lifelong career politicians!

I also think term limits are superior to age limits! E.g. would not prevent an older citizen from becoming an elected representative?

One example: With term limits, most likely the man from Scranton, Pennsylvania (Joseph Biden) would have never become the disaster of the 46th President!

Second example: The term limits imposed on U.S. Presidents since 1951 seemed to have worked quite well so far!

Apparently, in some Western democracies there is too little competition for citizens to become elected representatives and to challenge incumbents. For this and other reasons (political party machines etc.), too many elected politicians manage to hang on as members of parliament for too many years. 

The large caste of lifelong career politicians is a serious issue and a grave defect/flaw of Western democracies. For a citizen to become an elected politician, the office should be a temporary occupation to serve the community before another citizen is elected.
