Males are more difficult to birth than females for many mammals. Really!

Amazing stuff! This about the obstetrical dilemma. Was it not known for thousands of years that male babies are on average larger than female babies and thus impose more risks during childbirth?

Apparently, the only new discovery here is that these risks are found across mammal species.

I am not sure why the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) picked this article to promote it!

Again the AAAS gets caught using the ideological term "people" instead of women! DEI demagoguery is still alive!

The costly son hypothesis is a very unfortunate term. I hope it will be quickly end up in the dustbin of history and gain no traction!

"Every day, about 700 [women] people die giving birth around the world. A leading cause is obstructed labor, often due to the baby’s head exceeding the size of the birth canal. ...

Reviewing birth data for 140 species, the authors argue that sons are more difficult to birth than daughters for many mammals, including humans and our ancient ancestors.
The authors found this pattern in five domesticated animals: cattle, water buffalo, sheep, goats, and a breed of American racehorse.
That’s also the case in captive antelope and Asian elephants.
The pattern holds in cattle and sheep, even when controlling for birth weight, suggesting in addition to sheer size, factors such as sex differences in fetal shape and behavior could contribute to males causing more trouble during birth. ...

This added risk of this phenomenon, which the researchers dubbed the “costly son” hypothesis ..."

From the abstract:
"Human childbirth has often been considered uniquely difficult among mammals, yet recent evidence suggests that obstructed labor and fetopelvic disproportion are widespread across placental mammals.
Here, we propose the “costly son” hypothesis: because male offspring are typically larger at birth, they impose greater obstetric risk on mothers and themselves by increasing the likelihood of fetopelvic disproportion and dystocia. We compiled sex-specific birth weight data for 140 placental mammal species across 11 orders and reviewed published evidence on sex differences in dystocia risk.
Male neonates were more commonly larger at birth than females, and male-biased birth size differences were strongly associated with male-biased adult sexual size dimorphism. Species with male-biased adult size dimorphism had sixfold greater odds of exhibiting male-biased birth weight differences than species with female-biased dimorphism.
Male-biased birth weight differences existed irrespective of developmental mode (precocial or altricial), indicating that sex differences in fetal growth arise early in gestation.
Evidence from humans, livestock, and at least one non-human primate suggests that male fetal sex is associated with elevated dystocia risk, that is, precocial taxa where birth size approaches the mechanical limits of the maternal birth canal.
We further hypothesize and discuss how parity and sex ratio adjustment may modulate these risks and associated trade-offs in a Trivers–Willard context.
Our findings identify fetal sex as an underappreciated dimension of mammalian obstetrical dilemmas and suggest that the evolutionary benefits of producing larger sons are balanced by increased risks of birth complications and mortality."

IRS Rule To Strip the Tax-Exempt Status for Private Schools' at all levels when Using DEI

Good news! Long overdue! DEI is racism, no doubt it is about skin color and illegal discrimination!

Just look around how many US companies and schools of higher education still feature DEI prominently on their websites!

"The Trump administration is hitting private schools where it hurts the most: their tax-exempt status. A new rule proposed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on Thursday would strip private schools at all levels of education of tax-exempt status for using racial preference policies like diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

The Treasury Department estimates that the new rule could affect the statuses of 18,000 private elementary, secondary, and post-secondary institutions, including colleges, universities, and trade and professional schools. ...

Harvard University may have started the trend in 2023 after the Supreme Court decided Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, ruling that race-based admissions schemes like affirmative action are unconstitutional. Immediately after, then-President Claudine Gay, the disgraced plagiarist who still retains a job at the school after resigning the presidency, signaled that prospective students could still benefit from communicating their race on their applications, hinting that admissions boards would still consider that factor. ..."

Estrogen-only menopausal hormone therapy linked to fewer Alzheimer’s hallmarks in women

Good news!

Notice how Stanford University strenuously avoids to mention women in the first article below even though this health subject is about women!!! A typical case of deplorable ideology and indoctrination? It is certainly very strange!

"In brief
  • Stanford Medicine researchers examined autopsied brains for Alzheimer’s defining pathological hallmarks to learn how menopausal hormone therapy relates to the disease.
  • The study found that estrogen-only therapy was associated with fewer of these Alzheimer’s hallmarks and better performance on memory tests and in the ability to function independently.
  • The finding challenges a longstanding recommendation against hormone therapy for memory decline and points to a possible benefit against dementia for women who reach menopausal age without a uterus.
...

The study ... is the first to measure the connection between menopausal hormone therapy, or MHT, and reductions in Alzheimer’s-related pathological deposits in autopsied brains. ..."

From the abstract:
"Background and Objectives
Although evidence suggests that the neurophysiologic impact of estrogen decline during menopause may contribute to increased risk of Alzheimer disease (AD) in women, the effect of menopausal hormonal therapy (MHT) on AD risk requires further study. We sought to examine the associations between MHT use and neuropathologic, clinical, and imaging/fluid biomarker outcomes.

Methods
In this cohort study, we tested the association between estrogen-only MHT use and dementia outcomes in female participants using 2 independent, large-scale data sets:
National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC) and
Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI).
Participants included women 50 years and older with self-reported use of estrogen-only MHT or no self-reported use of MHT. Clinical, imaging/fluid biomarker, and neuropathologic outcomes were examined. Research was performed at academic medical centers.

Results
Neuropathologic data were collected from
NACC for 258 MHT users (mean age of death = 81.9, SD = 19.5) and 2,701 non-MHT users (mean age of death = 82.2, SD = 11.0).
The ADNI cohort included 110 MHT users (mean age = 76.5, SD = 7.5) and 1,948 non-MHT users (mean age = 73.2, SD = 8.9).
The odds of increased AD pathology on autopsy (primary outcome) were significantly decreased in MHT users relative to nonusers (odds ratio [OR] 0.65, 95% CI 0.48–0.88, p = 0.005).
MHT use was associated with secondary outcomes including significantly decreased amyloid pathologic load assessed through plasma (β = 0.44, 95% CI 0.16–0.73, p = 0.0025) and CSF (β = 0.07, 95% CI 0.002–0.13, p = 0.030).
MHT use was associated with significantly lower odds of clinical dementia diagnoses (OR 0.61, 95% CI 0.55–0.67, p < 0.0001) and lower odds of symptoms of memory/functional decline (OR 0.67, 95% CI 0.61–0.74, p < 0.0001).

Discussion
Our findings demonstrate small but significant associations between MHT use during later life and a range of AD-related neuropathologic and clinical outcomes in 2 large cohorts of female participants.
Although our results do not address causality and have limited generalizability due to the retrospective nature of the study, they suggest a protective effect of MHT use in the dementia course."

The permafrost link between methane emissions and climate change. Really!

More of the horrible climate demagoguery and indoctrination by the AAAS! Again junk science and junk journalism?

Remember CO2 and methane are trace gases in the atmosphere measured in few hundred (CO2) or even few (methane) parts per million!

I bet there also arsonists in Siberia! Or is Putin the Terrible doing some deforestation in Siberia so the megalomaniac can finally conquer the rest of the world? 😊

"Northern hemispheric permafrost stores twice as much carbon as is found in the atmosphere. As permafrost thaws due to climate warming, it becomes a potential source of methane emissions caused by microbial decomposition of soil organic carbon in wetlands, which could cause further warming. Zhu et al. report that methane emissions in Siberia have increased at a rate of around 5% per year since 2010 due to a combination of fires and permafrost melting. This source of methane is projected to become more important as climate continues to warm."

From abstract:
"The northern permafrost region, which stores double the amount of carbon in the atmosphere, is vulnerable to accelerated warming.
Methane emissions from thawing permafrost may eventually result in a climate-carbon feedback.
Our analysis of atmospheric methane data shows that Siberian growing-season methane emissions have increased by 12.0 ± 1.9 teragrams of methane (TgCH4) (5% per year) over the period 2010–2023.
We reveal contrasting Siberian hydrological trends linked to high-pressure systems and distinct air-sea-land interactions.
Warmer, drier conditions over eastern Siberia enhance fire-related emissions (0.7 ± 0.1 TgCH4 year−2), and wetter conditions over western Siberia promote wetland-related emissions (0.4 ± 0.1 TgCH4 year−2).
Weakly nonlinear relationships between temperature maxima and emissions suggest that by 2050 [???], higher Siberian emissions could offset about 20% of the global methane reduction required for climate targets [???], with eastern Siberia dominating the projected increase."

US National Academy Of Sciences Pulls Key Climate Science Chapter From Website

Good news! What took so long! Shame on the NAS to promote such ideology and indoctrination!

"... NAS pulled the climate science section, which appeared in the fourth edition of the “Reference Manual on Scientific Evidence,” while it reviews the process used to develop the guidance, following scrutiny over the chapter’s contents and the involvement of a lawyer connected to climate litigation against energy companies.

The manual is produced by the National Academies in partnership with the Federal Judicial Center (FJC), and assists federal judges in evaluating scientific and technical evidence that arises in litigation.

Although the exact amount of judges who use the reference manuals isn’t known , the fourth edition is publicly available online. Reuters reported since 1994 that the reference guide has been cited by over 1,300 judges. ...

President Donald Trump had also criticized the climate science section before its removal, arguing that the material contained faulty information and should not be supported by taxpayers. ..."

Neuroanatomy of the clitoris

Amazing stuff! However, this research is dated from March 2026, but has not come to my attention until now.

Notice how prevalent feminist ideology shines through in the context of this research! E.g. "Clitoris is one of the least studied organs" or "Cultural taboos around female sexuality". Is this not e.g. largely true for the penis too? E.g. is this some form of the infamous "penis envy" or phallic fantasies?

What is the first thing that comes to the mind of these Dutch researchers? Gender affirming surgery! Gross! Appalling!

From the abstract:
"The clitoris is one of the least studied organs of the human body [???]. The detailed anatomy of the clitoris is challenging to address through a gross dissection, as most of its parts are embedded internally, surrounded by pubic bone and several pelvic organs.
While clinical imaging methods such as magnetic resonance imaging can capture the gross 3D morphology, they lack the spatial resolution required to resolve the detailed structures.
In this study, we generated micron-scale computed tomography images of the female pelvises, leveraging a synchrotron radiation X-ray source. This unique data revealed the complex trajectory of the dorsal nerve of the clitoris, the main sensory nerve of the clitoris.
Notably, the nerve trunks within the clitoral glans were revealed, with the maximum diameter ranging from 0.2 to 0.7 mm. They showed a tree-like branching pattern projecting towards the surface of the glans.
We also revealed that some branches of the dorsal nerve of the clitoris ramify to innervate the clitoral hood and mons pubis.
Finally, the posterior labial nerve, a branch of the perineal nerves, was shown to innervate the surroundings of the clitoris and the labial structures.
These findings have an immediate impact on operations performed around the vulva area, such as gender-affirmation surgery and reconstruction surgery after genital mutilation."

Ancient DNA confirms historical accounts of how smallpox got to the Americas. Really!

Again the AAAS gets caught spreading stereotypes or biases!

By repeating a narrative it does not become a truth! Or as Oscar Wilde once said: "The truth is rarely pure and never simple" quoted from Oscar Wilde's 1895 play The Importance of Earnest.

It also appears that the researchers were biased. Why would they enter the year 1492 CE as the start dated for the sequenced ancient genomes in their abstract (see below)? The arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas? Is this a pretense of exactness or demagoguery?

This research is based only on two individuals found in one cemetery in Chile! This study also involves some serious estimation work on the evolution of the virus. Was this properly validated?

Maybe the Europeans of 16th and 17th century did not think that smallpox was so contagious anymore. Very likely, these Europeans did not understand that the indigenous population might be more vulnerable to this virus.

What diseases were spread from indigenous people to the early arriving Europeans?
"The primary and practically sole major disease widely accepted by historians and scientists to have passed from the Americas (including South America) back to early European arrivals is syphilis (specifically non-venereal or venereal treponemal variants that adapted into the European syphilis epidemic of the 1490s)." (Google Search)
Syphilis in the 16th century was significantly severe, disfiguring, and frequently deadly. (Google Search)

Or why did not other, more contagious diseases evolve in South America or the American continent before the arrival of Europeans?

"Sometime around the turn of the 17th century, two people died in northern Chile. Their disease-ravaged bodies were bundled in layers of textiles, buried in an Indigenous cemetery, and naturally mummified by the desert environment. Now, scientists have identified their killer: smallpox. The virus’ genome found in their bones and described today in Science represents the first molecular evidence of the disease in the colonial Americas, confirming historical accounts of the disease arriving with European contact and eventually killing millions of Indigenous inhabitants. ...

surprising hints that the smallpox virus’ evolution might have slowed down between the 16th and 18th centuries ...

the Chilean strain differed from modern smallpox, but thinks it was likely less virulent. ...

Archaeologists had previously described some of the mummies as having skin lesions, which they attributed to arsenic exposure. But smallpox could also leave such lesions. ...

Evolutionarily, the Chilean strain sits between pox viruses circulating during the Viking age and a virus isolated by Poinar’s team from a Lithuanian child mummy who died between 1643 and 1665 C.E. It likely diverged from other smallpox lineages around 1296 C.E., and went extinct before the early 20th century.
By estimating how long it would take for the strain’s hallmark genetic variants to evolve and combining that with radiocarbon dates from one of the mummy’s hairs, the scientists deduced that the outbreak in northern Chile occurred between 1492 and 1631 C.E."

"... Smallpox was one of the deadliest diseases introduced to the Americas during European colonization. The rapid spread of the disease across North, Central, and South America is estimated to have resulted in the deaths of three to four million people, particularly among Indigenous populations with no prior immunity. ...

Bruno González and colleagues identified ancient smallpox virus DNA in two mummified Indigenous Inca-Early Colonial-era individuals recovered from northern Chile, who lived between 1492-1631 CE."

Caveat: I did not read the research article.

From the editor's summary and abstract:
"Editor’s summary
Smallpox was introduced to the Caribbean by European colonialists before quickly spreading south. Romero González et al. sequenced ancient smallpox genomes from two likely Incan individuals from Chile dated between about 1492 and 1631 CE. Skin lesions on these mummified remains were previously attributed to arsenic exposure, but they are also consistent with smallpox infection.
Phylogenetic analyses suggested that this smallpox strain was most closely related to ancient European lineages that went extinct before the 20th century. These represent the earliest smallpox genomes found in the Americas and help set a timeline for gene loss during the evolution of this deadly virus. ...

Abstract
Smallpox was a major driver of population collapse in the Americas after European contact, yet the genetic identity of the causal strains remains unknown.
Here, we report the first ancient smallpox genomes in the Americas, dating to approximately 1492–1631 common era (CE), recovered from two Inca-Colonial individuals in northern Chile.
These genomes form a now-extinct lineage that diverged around 1296 CE, after the splitting of early medieval European strains but before the emergence of modern variola lineages, providing direct molecular evidence for smallpox introduction through European colonization.
We further identify a constant tempo of gene inactivation until the late 16th century, followed by a phase of constraint and a subsequent rebound in substitution rates, linking variola virus evolution to major shifts in human demography and epidemiology."

Gender equity: What keeps women artists out of the art world’s top echelon? Man-overrepresented institutions. Really!

Why are women underrepresented in e.g. construction or mining professions? What about gender equity in construction or mining?

A nice case again of cherry picking (or demagoguery)!

If I were a construction worker myself I would like to have more female colleagues and less male buddies! 😊

Men watch out in the age of gender equality and gender equity!

The author of the article below is a male. Is he pandering to women or spreading the predilections and ideological preferences/biases of an elite US university? Is his and his collaborators study junk science? You bet!

Pardon my following two facetious, possibly sexist, or misogynistic sounding remarks:
  • Maybe they are not as pretty as Mistress Kamala, who early on in her political career had an affair with a powerful politician in San Francisco.
  • Or some prefer to be and remain muses rather than artists?
"Women remain underrepresented [???] at the highest levels of the art world. In a new study, Yale SOM’s Magnus Resch examined the institutional pathways that shape artistic success — and how they may perpetuate gender gaps. "

"A painting by Joan Mitchell recently set a record for the highest sale price for a single work by a woman artist in Asia. Can you put that news in the context of the market for women’s art more generally?

Joan Mitchell’s $17.6 million sale is an important moment, but it doesn’t change the overall structure of the market. The gap at the very top remains enormous: the highest prices for male artists are still multiple times higher than those achieved by women. ...

To understand why, it helps to briefly explain how careers in the art world are built. Unlike many markets, success is not determined in a single step. It is the result of a sequence of institutional validations. In a previous paper I published in Science, we showed that roughly 99% of institutions have little to no impact on an artist’s long-term success.
Instead, there is a very small circle of highly influential institutions—household names like the Guggenheim Museum or the Gagosian gallery—that disproportionately shape careers. If an artist does not enter this network early on, the probability of reaching the top of the market drops significantly. ..."

From the abstract:
"From disparities [???] in the number of exhibiting artists to auction opportunities, there is evidence of women’s under-representation in visual art.
Here we explore the exhibition history and auction sales of 65,768 contemporary artists in 20,389 institutions, revealing gender differences in the artist population, exhibitions and auctions.
We distinguish between two criteria for gender equity [???]: gender-neutrality, when artists have gender-independent access to exhibition opportunities, and gender-balanced, that strives for gender parity in representation, finding that 58% of institutions are gender-neutral but only 24% are gender-balanced, and that the fraction of man-overrepresented institutions [???] increases with institutional prestige.
We define artist’s co-exhibition gender to capture the gender inequality of the institutions that an artist exhibits.
Finally, we use logistic regression to predict an artist’s access to the auction market, finding that co-exhibition gender has a stronger correlation with success than the artist’s gender. These results help unveil and quantify the institutional forces that relate to the persistent gender imbalance in the art world."

Unlocking the Medical Potential of Menstrual Blood. Really!

A disturbing article! When ideology results in absurdity!

Notice the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health does not mention women at all in this article as if transgender men have menstrual blood!

P.S. I believe, the medical analysis of menstrual blood has been done for a long time. Thus, this article is dated!

"An emerging field of study and innovation is stemming from a long-discarded biological resource: menstrual blood.

A growing number of researchers and biotech companies are exploring the potential of such blood samples as a tool for understanding fertility, diagnosing disease, and studying the body’s healing systems.

Recent developments include:

A system that collects and analyzes blood from used tampons, creating a “liquid biopsy” without invasive procedures.

A self-collection kit that uses a tampon to screen for HPV.

An FDA-approved pad used for hemoglobin A1c monitoring.

A menstrual cup used for endometriosis diagnosis.

Broader insights: Researchers are also studying whether menstruation may provide a “blueprint” for the body’s response to inflammation and tissue repair.
