Drones with tiny spikes landing on and travel with and monitor the routes of Arctic icebergs

Amazing stuff! The possibilities of applying drones are limitless or the sky is the limit! 😊

Make drones land almost anywhere!

"Microspines are one of many ways to enable robots to latch onto surfaces like walls and ceilings. Now roboticists in Canada are using the mini spikes to get drones to land on a more challenging, remote surface: icebergs.

Like a spider, the Ice Dart can land on and latch onto steep, slippery surfaces such as icebergs and glaciers—an increasingly useful capability as activity in the Arctic increases. The drone can grip onto icy slopes of nearly 60 degrees, which is way beyond what most humans could manage without special equipment.

In a recent study, researchers explained how they developed the Ice Dart drone with a special landing gear that absorbs the impact of a hard landing while holding the drone in place with tiny spines that penetrate and grip the ice. ...

The researchers were motivated by a desire to allow drones to land almost anywhere in the world, since the availability of safe landing sites is one of the primary limitations on where and how drones can operate. The researchers already have a history of developing drones that can land on fast-moving trucks as well as trailers, boats, and steep roofs. ..."

Nine schools in Florida, Georgia, and Colorado are installing pepper spraying, ramming attack drones designed to confront active shooters. Really!

How rare are active shooter events at schools in the US given the 2nd Amendment and high gun ownership?

Is this a case of alarmism and hysteria? Government paternalism?

Were any bribes paid? Is this an act of hysteria?

"... The aircraft are designed to distract their targets by flashing strobes, blaring sirens, spraying them with pepper gel, or ramming into them at 60 mph…

Teachers will have an app or classroom panic buttons to summon the drones. ..."

Electric flying VTOL taxis near reality, but US infrastructure lags

Good news!

"Electric air taxis are set to debut in select US cities through a government pilot program, but infrastructure is lagging, experts say.
Archer Aviation, the official air taxi provider for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, is advancing toward Federal Aviation Administration certification with its Midnight air taxi, but the main challenge remains the development of vertiports and charging stations."

"... This new dual-use autonomous VTOL aircraft platform, highlighted by its Halo (commercial) and Thunder (defense) variants, builds on eight years of eVTOL development and flight testing by Archer. It features a clean-sheet design, bringing the commercial VTOL sector's rapid innovation in electric propulsion and rotor design directly into a performance-optimized configuration. ..."

How to Make an Invisible Drone - Computational design generates a spinning drone that’s nearly transparent

Amazing stuff! There was something buzzing over my head yesterday! Just kidding!

"By exploiting the quirks of human vision, Northwestern University engineers have designed a drone that nearly disappears right before the eyes.

For years, researchers have tried to design invisible drones and robots using camouflage, transparent materials or light-bending optical systems. But the Northwestern team instead used a concept called “motion blur” — the same effect that makes fast-spinning fans and propellers seem to disappear.

Called the “Phantom Twist,” the drone spins up to 25 times per second, which is too fast for the human eye to see clearly. While it isn’t completely invisible, it morphs into a ghostly smudge that seamlessly blends into the background. The work eventually could lead to drones that monitor wildlife, survey the environment and inspect infrastructure with less visual disruption. ..."

From the abstract:
"We introduce Phantom Twist, a type of single-propeller UAV designed to achieve low visibility through high-speed spinning and the exploitation of motion blur.
We develop a two-stage automated design pipeline that optimizes the placement of functional components including batteries, control PCB, motor-propeller assembly, and counterweights. The pipeline minimizes visibility as measured by a human-aligned perceptual metric (LPIPS) while strictly satisfying inertial and aerodynamic constraints required for stable flight.
We validate this approach through fabrication and flight testing of multiple prototypes. These tests confirm that our pipeline produces stable, controllable designs and that the optimized UAV exhibits significantly reduced visual perceptibility compared to conventional quadcopters."

FBI seized more than 700 illegal drones during FIFA World Cup games near venues

Food for thought! This is only the beginning of the application of drones for civilian purposes!

How crowded with drones will the low altitude airspace get in the near future?

I think, I just saw two drones flying near by our home. Just kidding!

Drones are now assisting with a variety of public services:

Make public services not war!

"
  • In Australia, land managers used drones to clear an island of mice, and authorities are employing drone pilots to help warn beachgoers about great white sharks.
  • In India, a pilot program is using drones to rapidly transport phlegm samples from rural areas to laboratories for tuberculosis testing, helping patients avoid costly trips to distant testing centers.
  • During recent floods in China, rescue operators used drones to deliver emergency supplies and hoist stranded people to safety.

Neue Kampfdrohne für Deutschland? Was die Ghost Bat wirklich kann

Gute Nachrichten! Besser spät als nie! Not a ghost buster, but a ghost bat! 😊

Unprecedented footage shows sperm whales joining forces to help a newborn calf

Amazing stuff!

"The researchers quickly realized they had in fact observed a group of whales helping a calf take its first breath. Even more fortuitous, they had captured it on video from a drone.
It’s rare for researchers to see a sperm whale birth, with only a handful having been recorded previously.
And this time, overhead footage allowed the scientists to meticulously analyze the individual whales’ behavior before, during, and after the delivery. Although researchers have long hypothesized that sperm whales cooperate in certain social situations, the new study—reported today in Science—shows whales from different family branches can work together to support a newborn calf. ..."

Ukraine Deploys First Hydrogen-Powered Combat Drone

Amazing stuff!

"Ukraine has, for the first time, sent into combat a hybrid drone powered by hydrogen fuel. According to the builder Skyeton, a variant of its Raybird was deployed for full-scale combat duty with the Ukrainian Armed Forces in an active war zone.

Hydrogen-powered drones aren't exactly new. They've been around for almost 20 years, though previous examples were mainly technology demonstrators and experimental prototypes. Usually, these were intended as long-endurance, high-altitude craft, though an Israeli-US system called Heven AeroTech Z1 is intended for front-line missions, but this has yet to be deployed. ...

The hybrid system means that craft is quieter compared to a four-stroke engine and has a negligible heat signature, though its altitude is limited to 18,000 ft (5,500 m). ..."

Trump administration's ban on foreign-made drones starts this week

Bad or good news! This measure seems to make sense. To pause and review policies regarding drones is recommended.

Just imagine, e.g. recreational drones become espionnage instruments.

What if an amazon drone delivery drops a bomb?

"On Monday, the Trump administration’s Federal Communications Commission banned all new foreign-made drone models from distribution in the U.S., citing “national security concerns.” Americans who already own older foreign drone models will still be able to use those products, the government said.

In a fact sheet published Monday, the FCC claimed that “criminals, hostile foreign actors, and terrorists” could use drones “to present new and serious threats to our homeland.” As a result, the agency said that it had updated its Covered List — which is a list of products that have been “deemed to pose an unacceptable risk to the national security” of the country — to include all “UAS and UAS critical components produced abroad.” ..."
