TSMC Plans More for Arizona as First Fab Sees Success

Good news! However, there is e.g. no double taxation agreement between Taiwan and the US. That is surprising and a detriment for TSMC employees!

A trust for Samsung’s founding Lee family struggles to pay $10 billion in inheritance taxes

I bet, worries most people do not have! How much of these taxes represents double taxation? Or is this a case of overtaxation? Is it just?

Following famous words of Benjamin Franklin come to mind: "Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes."

"~$2 billion: The value of the shares that a trust for Samsung’s founding Lee family sold to help pay one of the world’s largest inheritance-tax bills ... Lee Kun-hee, whose father founded the Korean conglomerate, died in 2020, leaving his family with more than $10 billion in estate taxes. In 2021, they unloaded rare Picasso and Monet paintings to help cover the bill."

Nachteile für Paare: Korrekturbedarf bei der Steuerprogression

Aufgespießt! 😊

Nothing beats a flat income tax rate!

Schon mal was vom Schutz des Privateigentums gehört!

Abolish Sales Taxes In The U.S.

Posted: 10/1/2014

The Great Depression Made It Possible

Almost like desperate times require desperate measures.

I have recently read that sales taxes were only introduced during the Great Depression (This Wikipedia article kind of confirms this), because some states had difficulties financing their budgets. A tax once created lives forever so it seems. Show me the politician who voluntarily gives up a good source of revenue once created?

It Is Double Taxation

If a government already imposes an income tax, then it should be prohibited to tax sales as well. Politicians should be allowed to choose only between one of these two major sources of revenue.  E.g. Arizona has both taxes, side by side. A sales tax is a form of double taxation, because the income, used to make this payment,  is after tax. A sales tax usually is also very regressive.

Both taxes, i.e. sales tax and income tax, are defined on a usually broad base. Thus, politicians can easily jump revenues at their pleasure,  if they tinker with either tax or both. If Politicians do it well, most citizens will not even notice how much has been taken from them.

Like Estate Taxes

Estate taxes are also a form of double taxation when the income received to build the estate was previously subject to an income tax. It does not matter how generous the exemption might be.

The other reason for estate taxes is to tax any gains from income that was previously not reported for income tax purposes. Politicians do not trust their citizens.

Same same can be said of a sales tax. It also taxes any purchase paid from unreported income.

Lower tax rates makes more honest citizens!

A Capital Gains Tax Primer

A Primer By The Wall Street Journal

I did not have to write my own, the Wall Street Journal did a fine job by publishing one in the US weekend edition (9/22/2012) titled “A Capital Gains Primer” (Unfortunately by subscription only). I think this great newspaper is doing the general public a disfavor not to make this good article available.

Brief Summary

In the US, capital gains taxes are a form of double taxation, because business profits are taxed first, then their distribution to investors.

All Americans investing in the stock market or directly in enterprises benefit from low capital gains taxes. American employees benefit from higher business investments through better employment opportunities and higher wages. Thus, those who claim only “millionaires and billionaires” are populist demagogues who do not have the slightest clue how a free market economy works.
