Trump Administration Moves to Open nearly 45 Million acres of National-Forest Acres to Logging and road construction to prevent wildfires

Good news! Bravo President Trump! The federal government owns way too much land anyway! This is not about "pristine" or "untouched" "national forests" as some media outlets want us to believe.

It appears most news media spread disinformation about this latest move by President Trump! According to US Department of Agriculture this rule change serves primarily to improve forest management and to prevent wildfires! This seems to make a lot of sense!

Yes, maybe a large number of wildfires are human caused (incl. arsonists), but better forest management can reduce the damage caused by wildfires by removing the fuel.

"The Trump administration is proposing to rescind the Roadless Rule, a 25-year-old policy that bars development like road construction and logging on nearly 45 million acres of national forest land, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Tuesday. ...

In a letter published last fall, more than 30 leading forest science researchers from across the country refuted the administration’s claims. The researchers found over the last three decades across all Forest Service lands, the density of wildfire ignitions was lowest in wilderness and roadless areas. Their analyses also showed that the highest number of wildfire ignitions came from land in close proximity to roads. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, nearly 85% of wildfires are human-caused.  .."

"Today [8/18/2026], Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins announced the U.S. Forest Service has filed a proposed rule to rescind in its entirety the national 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule, a one-size-fits-all restriction that has frustrated land managers and served as a barrier to wildfire risk reduction work across large swaths of America’s national forests. ...

For 25 years, the 2001 Roadless Rule restricted road construction and limited the Forest Service’s ability to carry out critical active management work within inventoried roadless areas. Today, that includes more than 44 million acres of the 193-million-acre National Forest System. The rescission is intended to prioritize local agency decision-making over regulatory rules that are the same across the country, regardless of specific land management issues and needs. ...

“Active forest management is not an option. It’s essential,” said Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz. “More than 40% of inventoried roadless areas, primarily in the West, have high or very high wildfire hazard potential. And only 5% of those areas have received hazardous fuels reduction treatments since 2014. At the same time, more than a quarter of these lands—11.3 million acres—are already near existing roads. Acting now, thoughtfully and decisively, is the best way to restore the balance, reduce wildfire risk, and secure the long-term health of our forests and neighboring communities.” ..."

Nevada governor slams Biden for locking up 500,000 acres of mineral-rich land in new federal monuments

This egregious past and current land grab by the federal government is very concerning! When environmentalism trumps reason and economic development!

Monumental government failures and interventions! When environmentalism goes way beyond reasonable!

"Gov. Joe Lombardo (R-NV) blasted President Joe Biden on Tuesday for locking up 500,000 acres of mineral-rich land in Nevada and Texas. He said the move would be tough on Nevadans for generations.
Lombardo said the White House did not respond to any of his concerns before the announcement of the 506,000-acre Avi Kwa Ame National Monument in southern Nevada. ..."

Abolish U.S. President's Power To Create National Monuments

Devolution Of Federal Power

In the name of devolution of federal power, the U.S. President should no longer be exclusively authorized to single handedly declare new national monuments. There are already more than enough of such national monuments.

Too Much Land In Federal Hands

The federal government owns way too much land. Most of it should be returned to the respective member states of the union. I blogged here about this subject.

Easy Legacy For U.S. Presidents

To declare a national monument is more a monument to the legacy of a U.S. President than anything else. Even if a U.S. President did not accomplish anything else a national monument in his or her name suffices for everlasting recognition.

BLM - Why Is The Wave In Arizona So Inaccessible?

Bureau Of Land Management

This federal agency like several others are involved in managing the outlandish large land owned by the federal government, including national parks and national monuments.

Vermilion Cliffs National Monument In Arizona

See e.g. here and here.

To quote from the BLM website: “This remote and unspoiled, 280,000-acre Monument is a geologic treasure, containing a variety of diverse landscapes from the Paria Plateau, Vermilion Cliffs, Coyote Buttes, and Paria Canyon.”

The Wave

The Wave is one of the spectacular attractions of the Vermilion Cliffs NM and beyond. You can search the Internet for photos of it.

Outrageous Access Policies

As can be expected from a big federal government, the access policy is such that it severely restricts access to the people of this country.

The website of the BLM hides the information about the permits required, thus I will quote from Wikipedia here: “BLM limits access to the North Coyote Buttes Wilderness Area to just 20 permits per day. Ten of the permits are available in advance by an on-line lottery conducted four months before the month for which the permit is sought. The remaining ten permits are made available by lottery the day before one's intended hike.”

The Wave can only be accessed via a dirt road of 5-10 miles length, which may not be suitable for regular vehicles. Once you reach the trailhead, one has to hike another 3 miles across desert to get to the Wave.

Thus, effectively a large majority of the people of the U.S. will probably never in their lifetime be able to see the Wave thanks to these outrageous measures imposed by the federal government.

Wilderness For Wilderness’s Sake

I am personally opposed to such extreme nature conservation.

We The People should ask big federal government:
  1. To return such federal lands to the respective states
  2. To develop attractions like the Wave by private businesses for more tourism
