The AI boom appears to be adding far more American jobs than it is eliminating

Good news! Wait until the robots are coming! Just kidding!

"So far, the AI boom appears to be adding far more American jobs than it is eliminating. An analysis by The Economist finds that industries and occupations closely tied to AI and data centers have added about 1 million more US jobs than broader employment trends would predict. Around 320,000 of those above-trend jobs are in data-center-related construction and manufacturing, and 730,000 are in the occupations closest to AI development, such as engineering, software development, mathematics, and data science. By comparison, The Economist counted roughly 200,000 layoffs attributed to AI since mid-2023."

Corporate America Is Axing the ‘Micro-Team’ Boss and reducing layers of hierarchy

Some job cuts are different than others! 😊

"The latest broadside against small-team bosses comes from Uber. The ride-sharing giant said Wednesday it would reduce the number of “micro-teams”—those with only one or two direct reports—by nearly half. The move is part of a broader plan to cut 10% of its staff, about 3,300 people. Ultimately, the company will have 20% fewer managers, a spokesman said. ..."

"... Today [9/2/2026], we’re making a number of significant organizational changes across Uber. We are removing layers, simplifying team structures, refining our global location strategy, and focusing our people and investments against the biggest opportunities ahead of us. As a result, we will be reducing the size of our team by about 10%. Everyone whose role has been affected has already been notified, except in countries where we will follow the required local process. ...

Team simplification: We brought together teams where fragmentation was creating duplication and slowing decisions. ..."

Where are China’s youth headed in a crowded job market?

Very recommendable! High youth unemployment seems to be serious issue in China for the past 10 years or longer! Graduating from a university is no longer a guarantee of a good employment.

This has been reported multiple times in recent years.

Israel is replacing Palestinian workers with 330,000 foreign workers

More consequences of the coward mass murder terrorist attack of October 7, 2023!

The pressure is on the Arabs living in the Gaza Strip and West Bank to never allow again coward terrorists to operate among them building tunnels, hiding command centers and weapons underneath a children hospital and so on!

"Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been rapidly replacing its Palestinian labor force with foreign workers.
250,000 foreign workers are already in Israel and their number is set to rise to 330,000.
Many unseen challenges lay behind these numbers, the most substantial of which is the question of the housing that employers are obligated to provide for their foreign employees. The law stipulates a detailed definition of suitable housing and some companies are renting entire buildings and converted them into homes. But evidence of crowding and poor conditions is increasing and the government's solutions are mostly on paper. ...

After October 7, 2023, Israel decided to close its border crossings in Judea and Samaria with the Palestinian Authority and barred the entry of Palestinian workers into Israel. An estimated 150,000 Palestinian workers were regularly entering Israel before the war, of whom 92,000 were working legally, many of them in the construction industry. Only 20,000 Palestinian workers currently work in Israel, primarily in essential enterprises and communities beyond the Green Line. ..."

Israel’s elderly employment rate among OECD’s highest

Israel is always good for positive surprises (presumint this one is based on voluntary individual choices)! 😊

Israel has a gender equality problem, the official retirement age between men and women is a staggering five years apart, i.e. 67 versus 62.

Notice Israel has a rather high official retirement age of 67 for men.

"... A significant number of them work in security, education, and transportation and the vast majority are men. ...

While most Israelis who continue to work after the official retirement age (67 for men and 62 for women) leave their jobs shortly thereafter, the presence of men at particularly old ages, 70+, is even more striking.

Of men who work past the retirement age, over 58% continue to work even after the age of 70. For women, the rate is much lower - only 29%. ..."

British Kids Are Skipping Top Colleges for White-Collar Apprenticeships

A recurring theme in Western news reporting! Is it different this time?

Vorzeitiger Ruhestand belastet die Rentenkasse in Deutschland

Bedenklich!

Jobless Claims in the US Remain Below 200,000 For Third Straight Week—First Time in 57 Years

Good economic news! Below 200,000! Wow! This is probably as close as it gets to full employment in the US by this measure.

Maybe AI is not a job killer as of yet.

"Jobless claims have been below 200,000 for three consecutive weeks, the first such streak in 57 years. The last time jobless claims remained this low for this long was in 1969, during the extraordinary stretch of low unemployment from 1967 through 1969. The current numbers are all the more extraordinary because the workforce is more than twice as large and the last period’s labor numbers benefited from a military draft to support the Vietnam War.

The four-week moving average of claims fell to 198,750. Because claims can be volatile, many economists think this number is a better guide to the health of the labor market. The four-week average was last this low for two weeks in 2022. Prior to that, it had not been that low since 1969, when it hit an all-time low of 179,000. ..."

California’s minimum wage will rise to $17.40 an hour on Jan. 1, 2027. Really!

Why not $20 or better $25 an hour! Minimum wages are very arbitrary and they do not help many individual seeking a job on the labor market.

Minimum wages are only really good for incumbents, which is known for at least the last 100 years!

They are a form of appalling government price & wage controls!

They are constitutionally dubious and anathema for a country of free individuals!

It is a sign of socialism in the US!

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer unfortunate legacy, the Employment Rights Act of 2025

Recommendable! How stupid is this new law!

Was Keir Starmer a mediocre PM to put it mildly? I bet he was!

For decades, the government of the UK is heading in the wrong direction! Here is another example!

Once a classical liberal and largely free market economy is more and more becoming socialist since 1945.

Most of the victims of this legislation will be young individuals entering the labor market or inexperienced individuals of any age trying to change jobs etc. These adverse effects have been known for several decades!

"... Burdensome regulations, such as
day one paternity leave,
ordinary parental leave, and
statutory sick pay
might on the face of it look beneficial to workers, but not if they make employers more adverse to hiring new workers, especially young people without previous work experience. Young people who are either working flexible hours or looking for a permanent job don’t want mandated employment benefits if it means we won’t be hired in the first place.

Other regulations, such as workers being given the right to sue their employer for unfair dismissal after 6 months on the job – reduced from 2 years – will only create a more legalistic market, where employers spend more time managing legal risk than creating employment opportunities.

One benefit of having a free labour market is that it allows young and inexperienced workers the chance to gain experience and skills.
If the cost of hiring increases because of new employment rights, then it will be the youngest and least essential workers that will be laid off, or employers will simply hire less people. ..."

61% of Germany’s chemistry PhD students consider quitting their degrees

More bad news from the banana republic of Germany! Have German chemists become oversensitive (wie Mimosen)?

"Almost two-thirds of Germany’s chemistry PhD students have considered quitting their degrees, according to new research conducted by the German Chemical Society’s Young Chemists Network (JCF) [Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker e.V.]. Respondents to a survey organised by the JCF cited mental health issues, poor supervision and high workloads among the top reasons they had considering ending their studies. 31% of respondents claim to have been victims of abuse of power. ..."

Major Corporations Resume Hiring as AI Limitations Become Apparent

Oh, I can believe that instantly, given how often inaccurate or outdated or unreliable information is provided by AI.

Evolving Markets Drove the Remote Work Revolution in the US

Recommendable! Good news!

"Back in 2020 ... “The dramatic rise in telework amid the pandemic is a radical experiment, but its effects will be long-lasting.” ... Rates of full-time, in-office work plummeted during the pandemic, and while many employers have since shifted from fully remote work to hybrid work schedules, hybrid work levels have remained stable since 2022.
In 2025, 78% of full-time remote-capable U.S. employees are either hybrid or fully remote, with hybrid as the most common arrangement. ...

The most common arrangement sees workers commute two days a week and work remotely the other three. Most workers appreciate the flexibility, with a mere 6% of remote-capable workers saying they prefer to work on-site full-time.

An analysis from the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that across industries, the rise in remote work and total factor productivity growth may be positively correlated, and many employees report higher productivity at home. Some research also suggests that hybrid and fully remote work may have positive effects on individual employee productivity, satisfaction, and physical health, as well as employee retention. ..."
