Johns Hopkins archives highlight nearly two centuries of LGBTQ+ history. Really!

Does this elite university have nothing better or more relevant/novel to present!

The celebrity circus/cult about LGBTQ goes on!

How many times has the history of gay men and/or LGBTQ been presented over the last 40 years or so? Many times!

Democracy by Design Series | Engineering a Stronger Democracy. Really!

Friedrich von Hayek would probably disagree! Spontaneous order versus design!

"The first installment of the Democracy by Design: Engineering a Civic Life Lecture Series features Congressman John Sarbanes [of Sarbanes-Oxley Act fame]. His lecture, "Engineering a Stronger Democracy," will explore how we reform the design features of America's voting and governing machinery in order to restore public confidence in our elections and ensure that everyday citizens—not special interests—drive legislative policy in Washington. ..."

After 30 years, Japanese women, victims of forced sterilization, may receive government compensation

Good news! What took so long!

Again an US elite university, i.e. Johns Hopkins U, calls women people! Disgusting! Women were forcibly sterilized, not people! Same applies to The Telegraph news media!

"Nearly 30 years after forced sterilization ended in Japan, victims there are finally able to apply for government compensation.

Background: Between 1948 and 1996, at least 16,500 people were forcibly sterilized in Japan under the country’s Eugenic Protection Law, and ~60,000 more underwent abortions without or with only dubious consent.
Most were people with intellectual disabilities or hereditary diseases, and a large number of the victims were children.
Other countries like Peru and the U.S. are also grappling with recent histories of forced sterilization of Indigenous people and incarcerated women—and advocates say the practice persists worldwide among ethnic minorities and those with intellectual disabilities. "

"Just last week, in the Miyagi prefecture of Japan, the local governor met victims of an official eugenics policy to apologise for the suffering they underwent.

“On behalf of the prefecture, I would like to offer my heartfelt apologies for the immense suffering caused to the 900 (victims),” said Murai Yoshihiro while lowering his head. ..."

Johns Hopkins University: Beyond Borders: Antisemitism, Islamophobia, and the Israel-Palestine Divide. Really!

Incredible! An elite university suggests a (false) equivalence between Antisemitism and Islamophobia! What a nonsense!

Johns Hopkins University: Alexa, should voice assistants have a gender? Advocate for a gender neutral voice! Really!

The ivory tower of an elite university questions the voice of Alexa! Do not many of us prefer a warm, kind female voice over male barking? 😊

When gender obsessions go haywire! What is a "gender neutral voice"? The tech voice of a robot?

These JHU scientists complain about gender stereotypes by using themselves the  gender stereotype of toxic masculinity! So much for academic rigor tainted by ideology!

"Studies have long shown that men are more likely to interrupt, particularly when speaking with women. New research by Johns Hopkins engineers reveals that this behavior also extends to AI-powered voice assistants like Alexa and Siri, with men interrupting them almost twice as often as women do. These findings raise concerns about how voice assistant design—notably the use of stereotypically "feminine" traits like apologetic behavior and warmth—may reinforce gender biases, leading researchers to advocate for the design of more gender-neutral voiced tools. ..."

New AI cracks complex engineering problems faster than supercomputers

Good news!

"... Called DIMON (Diffeomorphic Mapping Operator Learning), the framework solves ubiquitous math problems known as partial differential equations that are present in nearly all scientific and engineering research. Using these equations, researchers can translate real-world systems or processes into mathematical representations of how objects or environments will change over time and space. ...

In addition to demonstrating the applicability of DIMON in solving other engineering problems, ... team tested the new AI on over 1,000 heart "digital twins," highly detailed computer models of real patients' hearts. The platform was able to predict how electrical signals propagated through each unique heart shape, achieving high prognostic accuracy. ...

to study cardiac arrhythmia, which is an electrical impulse misbehavior in the heart that causes irregular beating. With their heart digital twins, researchers can diagnose whether patients might develop the often-fatal condition and recommend ways to treat it. ..."

From the abstract:
"Solving partial differential equations (PDEs) using numerical methods is a ubiquitous task in engineering and medicine. However, the computational costs can be prohibitively high when many-query evaluations of PDE solutions on multiple geometries are needed. Here we aim to address this challenge by introducing Diffeomorphic Mapping Operator Learning (DIMON), a generic artificial intelligence framework that learns geometry-dependent solution operators of different types of PDE on a variety of geometries.
We present several examples to demonstrate the performance, efficiency and scalability of the framework in learning both static and time-dependent PDEs on parameterized and non-parameterized domains; these include solving the Laplace equations, reaction–diffusion equations and a system of multiscale PDEs that characterize the electrical propagation on thousands of personalized heart digital twins. DIMON can reduce the computational costs of solution approximations on multiple geometries from hours to seconds with substantially less computational resources."

Johns Hopkins targets zero emissions in new Climate Action and Sustainability, net zero by 2040. Really!

Clearly, elite universities are not immune to human fads and follies! A university to avoid for anyone with common sense!

To eliminate or drastically reduce single-use plastic is not environmentally friendly. E.g. In Germany this was unsuccessfully tried several decades ago! Plastophobia is a serious medical disorder! Please seek immediate medical assistance!

"The JHU Climate Action and Sustainability Plan —developed over the past two years with input from thousands of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and Baltimore residents—commits to:
  • Achieving net-zero emissions by 2040 by phasing out on-campus fossil fuels and by transforming the design and operation of new and existing buildings;
  • Purchasing all electricity from renewable sources by 2030;
  • Deploying a fully electric Homewood-Peabody-JHMI vehicle fleet by 2026, with the first electric buses scheduled to be on route by early 2025;
  • Ensuring that all light-duty and passenger vehicles purchased by the university are all-electric by 2030;
  • Increasing the diversion of all waste to 50%, in part by eliminating plastic water bottles and by partnering with university and city stakeholders to increase composting and minimize wasted food;
  • Expanding the impact of research and teaching to develop global solutions and train future leaders, thereby preparing for the community-wide impacts of climate change.

Nashville wants to improve traffic and reduce pollution over music

Much of this feature by Johns Hopkins University is the usual ideological garbage!

I marked the nonsense with [???] and indicated reasonable suggestions in boldface.

What to expect from a mayor of the Dimocratic Party! He wants to pay for it with a supposedly temporary tax increase!

"Transportation Justice [???] in Music City

... Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell is on a mission to “reverse the effects of environmental racism [???].” His engine of choice: transportation infrastructure.

The challenges:
Time spent in traffic congestion increased to 56 hours in 2023 from 41 hours in 2022 [???].

It has America’s toughest commute, per Forbes, with long drive times and a lack of walkability, bikeability, and public transportation.

Pollution from traffic snaking through the city’s urban core disproportionately impacts communities that have been historically marginalized because of the racist practice of redlining [???].
O’Connell wants to establish economic equity [???] and reduce pollution-related health threats by:
Replacing two-thirds of the city’s traffic lights with smart signals capable of adjusting traffic flows on demand while reducing commute times and stop-and-go fuel emissions.

Constructing bike lanes, 86 miles of new sidewalks, and 12 new transit centers with 24-hour bus service.

Planting 500,000 trees by 2050 and seeding native wildflowers citywide.
The catch: Much of O’Connell’s goals depend upon passage of a referendum next month that would impose a temporary sales tax surcharge [???] that would help the city access federal funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act."

U.S. Elections: An Existential Crossroads for Global Health Policy. Really!

Hysteria and alarmism from the elite Johns Hopkins University! Lousy propaganda and demagoguery!

"The 2024 U.S. elections will shape the future of global health policy, determining whether America will continue to provide crucial leadership to advance global health, according to four members of CUGH’s Advocacy and Communications Committee.

Backstory: The U.S. has long played a leading role in global health governance, from the WHO’s establishment in 1948 to the launch of PEPFAR in 2003.
But that changed after the 2016 election ...
Elections’ impact:
The Trump Administration prohibited foreign assistance for reproductive health services, withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement, and, during the COVID-19 pandemic, sought to withdraw from the WHO.

Subsequently, the Biden Administration walked back those decisions, seeking to restore U.S. leadership in global health.
High stakes: The future of the nation’s leadership in global health hangs in the balance of this election—and global health stakeholders should raise awareness of candidates’ global health positions for voters, argue the authors."

Abortion prevents child abuse and neglect by substance using mothers. Really!

Absurd coming from an elite university!

Women are called "pregnant people"! Disgusting gender ideology!

Substance using women ought to seek help or should be helped before they become pregnant. Why not adoption instead of abortion?

"At least 210 women were charged with pregnancy-related crimes since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022—more than in any other 12-month period since 1973, Pregnancy Justice reports; in most of the cases, women were accused not of violating abortion bans, but of child abuse, neglect, or fetus endangerment. Newsweek"

"... While state actors have used various justifications for criminalizing pregnancy, the overwhelming majority of cases rely on substance use allegations, usually as a basis for charging pregnant people with criminal child neglect or endangerment. With substance use and pregnancy as an entry point, prosecutors have employed fetal personhood to argue that a wide range of criminal laws should be interpreted to reach the context of pregnancy. More than half of states have laws that require reporting to family regulation authorities related to people’s use of alcohol or drugs during pregnancy and/or define alcohol or drug use during pregnancy as civil child abuse or neglect. ..."

The Rise of Pregnancy Criminalization: A Pregnancy Justice Report "From 2006 to the 2022 reversal of Roe, we've documented nearly 1,400 cases of pregnancy-related criminalization across the U.S. State actors — including police, prosecutors, healthcare workers, family regulation workers, and judges — have deprived pregnant people [???] of virtually every constitutional right in the name of protecting "unborn life." The cases show that pregnancy outcomes other than abortion, including birth and pregnancy loss, are far more likely to result in criminalization."

Johns Hopkins University lives in a bubble

There is a war going on in the Ukraine, the largest in Europe since 1945! What does JHU release on Monday 2/28.2022:

"... Hundreds of thousands of refugees, hospitals without power or oxygen, spiking levels of radioactivity, and racism"

Yes, the biggest concern in the Ukraine are a few isolated incidences of racism! Besides Chernobyl where else does the medical school suspect spiking levels of radioactivity to come from?

"... Low O2: Medical oxygen supplies—critical for patients with complications ranging from pregnancy to COVID-19—are nearing “a very dangerous point,” ..."

War victims are not mentioned!

"... What Happened in Wuhan
A trio of new preprint research articles add to evidence that the pandemic originated in Wuhan’s massive Huanan Seafood Wholesale market, supporting a zoonotic origin story similar to that of HIV, Zika, and Ebola. ..."

Is this really published by a leading U.S. medical school? Do they really not know that that HIV, ZIKA, and Ebola are all transmitted by bodily fluids, while SARS-CoV-2 is airborne! Even the comparison with those three disease is highly questionable!

"... Nearly Half of Humanity Threatened
Widespread disruption traced to human-induced climate change is already posing a “grave and mounting threat” to billions of people around the world—with those least likely to cope facing the most suffering, warns a new Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report. ..."

Of course, the pseudoscience of the Global Warming Hoax and the Climate Change Religion had to be mentioned too!

Global Covid-19 Recovered Statistics: United States is missing

Is it not very peculiar that the U.S. does not report the number of recovered (at least not according to Johns Hopkins University)? If find it extraordinary!

But Canada and Mexico are not missing from this list!

The number of recovered is essential to compute and determine herd immunity! Thus, the omission of the number of recovered in the U.S. from the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center is strange!
