U.S. crop genome sequencing gets $180 million boost from the US Department of Agricuture

"Locked in 22 repositories across the United States, hundreds of thousands of vials, envelopes, and jars preserve the genetic diversity of more than 16,000 plant species for crop breeders. But most samples within the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) National Plant Germplasm System remain unstudied. ...

This week, USDA announced funding to give that research a boost. The agency will spend $180 million over the next 2 to 3 years for gene sequencing of samples held in its repositories. ..."
