Why did the execution fail in Tennessee

Where amateurs conducting the execution?

"The execution of Christa Pike failed because correctional staff improperly placed IV lines or caused her veins to rupture ("blown veins"), preventing the lethal drugs from properly entering her bloodstream.

Key Factors in the Failed Execution

Medical experts and attorneys noted several major failures during the lethal injection process:

• Blown Veins and Soft Tissue Seepage: Pike has a known blood disorder (thrombocytosis) and small, fragile veins, making her a "difficult stick". Because her veins ruptured quickly during the procedure, the vast majority of the two doses of pentobarbital leaked into the soft tissue of her arms instead of flowing through her central bloodstream to her brain.

• Potential Drug Degradation: Attorneys have also alleged that Tennessee's supply of pentobarbital may have been deteriorated or degraded, diminishing its effectiveness.

• Protocol and Execution Failures: Correctional staff poked Pike with needles at least seven times in the death chamber. Her defense team accused the Tennessee Department of Correction of reckless disregard for basic medical practices and failing to realize she had a blown vein during the process." (Google Search)

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued a construction permit for a commercial small modular nuclear reactor

Good news! A nuclear power renaissance!

"... authorizing the Tennessee Valley Authority to build a 300-megawatt reactor near Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Small modular reactors are designed to be simpler, more standardized, and easier to build than conventional nuclear plants, potentially reducing the cost of expanding nuclear power. The permit is the second issued for a US commercial reactor this year, following TerraPower’s Natrium reactor in Wyoming in March."

"The Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved a construction permit for the Tennessee Valley Authority to build a small modular nuclear reactor at its Clinch River site in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, clearing the way for the nation’s first commercial small modular reactor and completing the NRC’s review in 14 months. This is the agency’s second major reactor approval this year. ..."

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee halts execution of woman who survived two lethal injections

What a bizarre story! Justice delayed is justice denied!

Why did it take 31 years from committing the crime to carrying out the capital punishment in this case?

Caveat: I am not familiar with the details of this story.

"Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee halted the execution of Christa Gail Pike, who was convicted of a 1995 murder in which the victim had a pentagram carved into her body.

Pike's attorneys said in a court filing Wednesday night that their client is still alive and snoring, after she received two lethal doses of drug. ..."

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee proposes renaming Nashville international airport after Dolly Parton

Sounds like a good idea to me! A fitting tribute indeed!

The airport will be renamed from Barry Field Airport (BNA) to Dolly Parton airport. "Berry Field: The airport was named after Colonel Harry S. Berry.
Who was Col. Berry: He was a World War I and II U.S. Army veteran and directed the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in Tennessee." Google Search)

"Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has proposed the renaming of Nashville International Airport in honor of Dolly Parton, the country music legend who died on Tuesday at age 80.

Trump to Send National Guard to Memphis, Tennessee

Good news! It would be great if more Dimocratic politicians would come to their senses about being soft on crime!

When the Republican governor and the Democratic mayor can agree on fighting crime! Democratic mayor of Memphis is joining the mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington DC!

"President Trump said Friday that he was sending the National Guard to Memphis, Tennessee, calling the city “deeply troubled.”

Trump said both the state’s Republican Gov. Bill Lee and the Democratic mayor of Memphis, Paul Young, were “happy” with his plan.

Memphis, which has long struggled with crime, had one of the highest per capita rates of murder and other violent crime of any large city in the country in 2024, according to the FBI.

For weeks, Trump discussed plans to send National Guard troops to Chicago, but facing resistance there, he said he began looking at states governed by Republicans."

Good news! Google is an power company! Data centers powered by nuclear power!

"“Alphabet’s Google and Kairos Power will deploy an advanced nuclear plant connected to the Tennessee Valley Authority’s electric grid by 2030, the companies announced Monday.

TVA has agreed to purchase up to 50 megawatts of power from Kairos’ Hermes 2 reactor. It is the first utility in the U.S. to sign a power purchase agreement with an advanced reactor like Hermes 2, according to the companies. ..."

"... Google, Kairos Power, and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) announced on August 18 a new collaboration to help meet America’s growing energy demand and bolster the country’s leadership in advanced nuclear energy. Through a new power purchase agreement (PPA) between Kairos Power and TVA, Kairos Power’s Hermes 2 Plant in Oak Ridge, Tenn., will deliver up to 50 megawatts (MW) of reliable, 24/7 energy to the TVA grid that powers Google data centers in Tennessee and Alabama.

Elon Musk's massive AI data center xAI Colossus gets approved for 150MW of power, enabling all 100,000 GPUs to run concurrently

150 MW of power that is roughly equivalent to 10-20% of a single nuclear power plant! Just imagine how many solar panels this requires!

The huge power consumption of data centers and machine learning & AI are a very serious issue.

"... Elon Musk’s ‘Gigafactory of Compute,’ the xAI Colossus, received approval from the Tennessee Valley Authority in early November to receive 150MW from the state’s power grid. This increases the site’s initial supply of 8MW by almost twenty times, triggering concerns from local stakeholders about how this much power demand from xAI would impact supply reliability and power prices across the Tennessee Valley. Furthermore, Power Grid International reports that Elon plans to double the site’s computing capacity, doubling the facility’s energy requirements. ...

However, the site only had 8MW available at the time of its opening in July. So, Musk used massive portable power generators to meet the company’s needs. While Memphis Light, Gas & Water (MLGW) upgraded the existing substation to 50MW over the summer, running all 100,000 GPUs concurrently on the site is insufficient. ..."

Nashville wants to improve traffic and reduce pollution over music

Much of this feature by Johns Hopkins University is the usual ideological garbage!

I marked the nonsense with [???] and indicated reasonable suggestions in boldface.

What to expect from a mayor of the Dimocratic Party! He wants to pay for it with a supposedly temporary tax increase!

"Transportation Justice [???] in Music City

... Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell is on a mission to “reverse the effects of environmental racism [???].” His engine of choice: transportation infrastructure.

The challenges:
Time spent in traffic congestion increased to 56 hours in 2023 from 41 hours in 2022 [???].

It has America’s toughest commute, per Forbes, with long drive times and a lack of walkability, bikeability, and public transportation.

Pollution from traffic snaking through the city’s urban core disproportionately impacts communities that have been historically marginalized because of the racist practice of redlining [???].
O’Connell wants to establish economic equity [???] and reduce pollution-related health threats by:
Replacing two-thirds of the city’s traffic lights with smart signals capable of adjusting traffic flows on demand while reducing commute times and stop-and-go fuel emissions.

Constructing bike lanes, 86 miles of new sidewalks, and 12 new transit centers with 24-hour bus service.

Planting 500,000 trees by 2050 and seeding native wildflowers citywide.
The catch: Much of O’Connell’s goals depend upon passage of a referendum next month that would impose a temporary sales tax surcharge [???] that would help the city access federal funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act."

There is a catholic Female Trans Monk and hermit active in Tennessee

That whiskey made in Tennessee must be really good! I should try it more one day! 😊 A bit of a bizarre story! The strong itch to be the first may have played a role here again!

Why do we see so few reports about transgender males?

What did this woman look like before she identified as a man? I have some doubts, just look at the beard of this monk. I almost suspect this person was always a man before he declared to be transgender.

"On Pentecost Sunday, Brother Christian Matson, a professed hermit in the Diocese of Lexington, has made it public that he is a transgender person. Brother Christian has long sought to consecrate his life to Christ in the Church by living the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity
and obedience. He has consistently been accompanied by a competent spiritual director and has undergone formation in the Benedictine tradition. He does not seek ordination, but has professed a rule of life that allows him to support himself financially by continuing his work in the arts and to live a life of contemplation in a private hermitage. Bishop John Stowe, OFM Conv., accepted his profession and is grateful to Brother Christian for his witness of discipleship, integrity and contemplative prayer for the Church."

"The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is issuing a construction permit for a new type of nuclear reactor that uses molten salt to cool the reactor core.
The NRC is issuing the permit to Kairos Power for the Hermes test reactor in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, the agency said Tuesday. ...
This is the first construction permit the NRC has issued for a reactor that uses something other than water to cool the reactor core. ...
The global nuclear industry launched an initiative at this year’s U.N. climate talks for nations to pledge to triple nuclear energy by 2050. More than 20 have already signed on, including the United States and the host of COP28, the United Arab Emirates. ..."

Tennessee May Soon Require Drunken Drivers to Pay Support to Victims’ Children

Maybe not such a bad idea!

Individual freedom is not possible without individual responsibility. When one drinks alcohol or consumes other psychoactive substances, then personal responsibility and consequences significantly increase!

"Tennessee lawmakers passed a bill this week that would require drunken drivers convicted of killing anyone with children to pay child support, in a first for a U.S. state.

The state Senate unanimously passed the bill Wednesday, about two months after House lawmakers had done so. The legislation now heads to Republican Gov. Bill Lee. ..."
