EU Commission designates ChatGPT, Reddit, Roblox under Digital Services Act | Shaping Europe’s digital future. Really!

Most likely a very stupid big government decision! Reeks of government paternalism!

Apparently, the EU wants to fall further behind in AI!

I hope OpenAI or Reddit and others affected will shut down their service in the European Union in response to this decision by the EU Commission!

"These services declared that they reach at least 45 million average monthly users in the EU and thus meet the threshold for designation.

Following the notification of the designations, these services have four months, i.e. by January 2027, to comply with the additional DSA obligations for VLOPs [Very Large Online Platforms] and VLOSEs [Very Large Online Search Engines], such as assessing and mitigating the systemic risks [???] stemming from their service and algorithmic systems related to the
dissemination of illegal content [???], the
negative effects on minors [???],
users’ physical and mental well-being [???],
fundamental rights [???],
electoral processes and public security [???]. ..."

"... The designations bring the total number of platforms and search engines under the DSA's strictest tier to 28.

The regulation has already produced around €870 million in fines, including a record €550 million penalty against AliExpress in July for failing to curb the sale of illegal and counterfeit goods, a €200 million fine against Temu in May for comparable failings and a €120 million fine against X in December 2025 over content moderation and transparency shortcomings. ..."

Meta’s $200b-$1 trillion lawsuit could change social media forever

Update of 8/26/2026: Meta settles for $18 billion in lawsuit brought by 29 states over social media harms to children Good news! Looks like Zuckerberg got away cheaply or by how much were the plaintiffs claims were substantially inflated?

This seems to be more of a government shakedown and it reeks of government paternalism!

Other, Western countries have implemented stupid social media bans for children!

Meta will have a very tough stand to defend against so much government power and the claim it is harmful to children.

What about e.g. the responsibility of parents?

"Thirty US states are suing Meta for over $1 trillion, accusing it of knowingly designing Instagram and Facebook to be addictive and harmful to children, while concealing what it knew."

Kids Who Joined Social Media Earlier Had Lower Test Scores, Study Finds. Really!

Not so fast! As usual, this is a biased study as it does not ask what do young users of social media learn more compared to other students.

The study is limited to Northern Italy and focuses only on early childhood!

"Children who start using social media at a younger age may be putting their future academic performance at risk, according to a new study that tracked more than 5,000 students in Italy.

Researchers found that adolescents who opened their first personal social media account at ages 11 to 12 went on to score significantly lower in standardized tests than peers who waited until age 14 or 15. ..."

From the abstract:
"This study uses difference-in-differences models to evaluate the impact of early social media use on academic performance among children aged 7–16 years. A dataset comprising 5,227 students from northern Italy was constructed by merging data from a questionnaire on lifetime digital media habits with longitudinal standardized test scores in Italian, English and mathematics. Participants who created a personal social media account in 6th, 7th or 8th grade were separately matched with late adopters who initiated their first social media account in the 9th grade or later. The findings provide compelling evidence that early engagement with social media adversely affects learning outcomes. Additional findings on the effects of early social media use on other academic outcomes for which we do not have longitudinal data are in line with our main findings. We also find supporting evidence that a substantial part of this negative effect is mediated by students’ smartphone pervasiveness in key moments of the day."

Studie: Social Media kostet Schüler ein halbes Jahr Lernleistung. Wirklich!

Was fuer ein Unsinn!

These are the 14 countries moving to ban social media for children. Really!

Banning is no solution or a stupid/naive/clueless one! Reeks of government paternalism!

What about e.g. social media with child appropriate content etc. What if the content is beneficial for and supportive in the development of children etc.?

What about parental controls? Are parents not foremost responsible?

Truly shocking that so many Western countries (incl. UK, Germany) are listed/involved as well!

President Trump Vows Revenge as Iran War Widens. The specter of another quagmire war?

Bad news! Is the peacemaker becoming a warmonger? Are his emotions taking over his judgment?

Will this war with Iran escalate and expand? The risks are high!

Will this war become another quagmire for the US like Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq?

"President Trump vowed harsh retaliation against Iran after a ninth night of U.S. strikes, warning that each American soldier killed would be avenged “many times over.”

At least 17 U.S. service members have died in the war, including two at a Jordanian air base struck by Iran. Trump passed the directive to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.

Tehran escalated further, with the Revolutionary Guard claiming two oil tankers exploded in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran-backed Houthis declared a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia. ..."

Two British fugitive Social media influencers arrested in Miami

What a sordid story! Not all social media is wholesome!

Caveat: I am not familiar with the details of this case.

"U.K. social media influencer brothers Andrew and Tristan Tate were arrested by federal authorities Saturday in Miami, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

The charges against the duel U.S. and British citizens have yet to be announced. A Marshals Service spokesperson told the Associated Press the warrant is sealed.

The brothers, who moved to Romania in 2016, were arrested on an extradition request from the U.K., a person familiar with the matter, told the wire service, on the condition of anonymity.

The brothers, who have millions of followers on social media, have been wanted in the United Kingdom, where they face rape and human trafficking charges, the wire service also reports. ..."

Anti-social: Social media's fads/ads/vids, not friends, which now dominate our feeds

Food for thought! Besides social media addiction ... Or when algorithms define your life and activities.

Caveat: I am not an expert on social media since I barely use it.

"... There are ads too – although they look just like the other posts – for a robot-vacuum cleaner, a diet and bed linen (with Morris-inspired designs). But no friends. She has 198 on Instagram but she says "it's completely changed. I practically don’t see any friends' posts anymore." She’s pretty much given up posting herself.  ...

In France, annual official Barometre du numerique 2026 shows 49% of social media users are "active only occasionally".
In the UK, an Ofcom report  published in April showed a year-on-year drop of users who actively post from 61% to 49%.
In the US, a Morning Consult survey of June last year found 28% reported posting less often than the previous year. Just 33% now post daily compared to 57% who use it for entertainment daily. The gap is a lot wider still for Gen Z – 18% active for 74% passive. ...

It was TikTok that helped to pioneer an algorithm that figures out from the moment you start scrolling what you like, and then fills your feed with material calculated to keep you on the app for the longest possible time. ..."

Anti-social: It's fads, not friends, which now dominate our feeds "Social media platforms used to be about communication between friends – now many are increasingly short video entertainment hubs. The business model is to increase the time people spend on their apps and increase ad revenue. But is there already a consumer backlash?"

“Social Media Addiction” Is Way More Complicated Than You Think

Do not many teenagers go through some temporary infatuation or mania at some point during their adolescence? Oh, yea! Usually, they are harmless and end well!

Who is most responsible to make sure this does not become pathological, addictive etc.? Parents, guardians, older siblings!

"The era of social media addiction litigation is upon us.

In a case heard this March, a Los Angeles jury decided against Meta (the parent company of Instagram) and Google (the parent company of YouTube), finding them liable for negligence and defective design.
The plaintiff was 20-year-old Kaley G. M., who claimed that her decade-long addiction to social media caused her to suffer anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and body dysmorphia. In her complaint, Kaley said she developed a “dangerous dependency” on the platforms. ...

For the defense, the Meta team argued the plaintiff’s psychological distress predated her use of Instagram ...

Kaley won $3 million in compensatory damages, and $3 million in punitive damages. Meta is appealing. ...

The same basic arguments used in Kaley’s lawsuit are driving lawsuits against Meta, Google, Snapchat, and ByteDance (owner of TikTok), filed by over 2,500 individuals, states, and schools. One study suggests that the compensation sought by more than 1,200 school districts totals nearly $500 billion.

Meanwhile, the California court system has coordinated a large group of plaintiffs—representing more than 1,000 cases from across the nation—suing social media companies under a collective known as Judicial Council Coordination Proceeding. The earliest cases will soon come before a California judge. ..."

Four Dimocratic Party ruled States Seek $1.4 Trillion from Meta in penalties

How frivolous is this? Or how greedy is the Dimocratic Party! Quite insane and damaging to business!

"Four states are seeking a whopping $1.4 trillion in penalties from Meta, claiming Facebook and Instagram were designed to addict children and that the company misled the public about the platforms’ safety.

The sum approaches Meta’s entire market capitalization of roughly $1.5 trillion. California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey calculated the figure by multiplying estimated young users harmed by fine amounts set under state law. ..."

Jury Rules Social Media Liable for Teen's long-term Addiction. Really!

I hope this ridiculous verdict will not stand! The rest of the world will have a good laugh again about American jurisprudence!

What about the parents of this child?

"Jury Rules Social Media Liable for Teen's Addiction

A Los Angeles jury ruled Wednesday that Meta and YouTube must pay a combined $6 million in damages to a 20-year-old woman who said the platforms hooked her as a child through design features like infinite scroll, autoplay, and algorithmically timed notifications.

The plaintiff, known as K.G.M., testified she began using YouTube at 6 and Instagram at 9, eventually spending 16 hours in a single day on Instagram, spiraling into depression, anxiety, and body dysmorphia.

Jurors targeted platform design itself as a defective product, a legal theory one tech policy professor compared to the tobacco lawsuits.

More than 1,500 similar suits against Meta, YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok are pending in California courts alone."

YouTube surpasses Disney, Paramount, WBD in 2025 ad revenue

Good news! YouTube is now among the largest media companies by revenue!

"... YouTube pulled in $40.4 billion in ad revenue last year, which is more than Disney, NBC, Paramount, and Warner Bros. Discovery combined. ...

Last month, parent company Alphabet reported that YouTube’s total revenue in 2025 soared to $60 billion. A big portion of YouTube’s revenue now comes from subscriptions, which include services like YouTube TV, YouTube Premium, YouTube Music, and NFL Sunday Ticket. (For context, that’s well above Netflix’s reported $45.2 billion for the full year.) ..."

Hamas used emojis, SIM swaps to evade Israel before and on October 7 terrorist attack

Amazing stuff!

"Hamas’s military wing began sending coded emoji messages on WhatsApp to operatives’ phones just hours before the October 7, 2023, attack, using the symbols as an agreed signal to mobilize terrorists to mosques for last-minute instructions, Israeli media reported on Monday.

Findings from an IDF General Staff investigation, which also drew on intelligence collected during fighting, indicate the high usage of emojis was one of several warning signs overnight that Hamas was preparing a large-scale assault on Israel.

According to military sources, once operatives received the emoji signal, they moved to mosques or designated collection points, where they received briefings and were directed to retrieve equipment from home or from pre-stocked “combat bags” containing military and personal gear. ..."

The Misdiagnosis of American Mental Health in the age of social media and smartphones

Recommendable! Food for thought! The alarmism and hysteria surrounding social media and smartphone use!

George Santayana's 1905 famous quote "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" fully applies here! How often in the past were then new technologies decried as causing mental health issues. Very often, too often like superstition! Why is superstition still alive at the end of the first quarter of the 21st century? No matter how many PhDs, true human intelligence and knowledge is rare and highly distributed across the entire population irrespective of formal education! Stupidity is much more common across all strata of human society.

"The United States has serious issues with mental health, but many popular explanations for the problem—such as loneliness, screen time, and social media—are built on thin evidence and inflated comparisons. ...

These measures of time spent alone also revolve around physical proximity, literally being in the room with someone. But what about hanging out online? I’m a pretty big geek, and I play Dungeons & Dragons online with friends from around the country. We’re talking, we’re laughing, we’re having a good time, but we’re thousands of miles away from each other. Shouldn’t that count as time spent with others? ...

met over 100 people [online] that I’ve not met physically. So, I feel, in some ways, more socially connected than I would have been without this technology. On the other hand, it’s probably true that if none of these online avenues were afforded to me, I would go out and meet more people in person. ...

Usually, time spent on social media and on smartphones draws teens and young adults away from television. So television is really the big casualty of the social media age. ...

Now, fifty years ago, people worried about television drawing people away from real-life relationships.
The landline was also the subject of a similar panic 100-plus years ago, but it was about women. There was a sense that women were going to neglect their household duties and find lovers via the telephone.
People also worried about the telegraph.
And at the beginning of the 19th century, people were worried that young people would spend hours looking into kaleidoscopes and ruin their lives. So, there is a cycle of panic that goes on and on without anybody worrying too much about evidence. ...

First, in most countries that have adopted smartphones and social media, we do not see a pattern of declining youth mental health. It seems to be something very specific to the United States. For various reasons, I think the best metric to track is suicides, because a body is a body, and self-report tends to be rubbish. And in most European countries, and in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, we don’t see any evidence of a youth mental health crisis. In the United States, there was an increase in youth suicide in the 2010s, but it has now begun to reverse. Maybe it will reverse again, but so far, we’re seeing an improving trend for youth in the United States.

Second, the increase in suicide was actually much worse for middle-aged adults than it was for teens. Everybody’s worried about teenage girls, but a white male from 45 to 55 has roughly a three to five times elevated suicide risk compared to a teenage girl. ...

We also have hundreds of studies that look at time spent on social media and mental health. Generally, across this literature, we do not find that time spent on social media or smartphones is predictive of negative mental health outcomes, nor do we find that reducing social media time improves mental health in experimental studies. ...

You can also technically say that Americans are spending the most time alone that has ever been recorded. But the decrease in time spent with others over the past 20 years was 1.7 percent. So, one version of this story sounds horrible, and the other sounds like not a big deal.

This issue of effect size is a consistent problem with a lot of research in medicine and the social sciences. It’s entirely true that a study can find a statistically significant effect that has no meaning whatsoever in the real world. There’ve been a couple of unpublished studies of cell phone bans in schools that have been hyped as if they provide evidence for these bans, but they don’t, because the effect size is near zero. The actual impact of cell phone bans on student learning is zero. It does not improve student standardized testing scores, grades, or anything else. But when you run 600,000 kids through an analysis, everything is statistically significant. Plucking a hair out of their head once a day could’ve been statistically significant. ..."

Trump Media began with a social media app, now it’s doing TV, AI, content streaming, crypto currency and even nuclear fusion power

Headline of the day! As they say once a businessman, always a businessman! 😊

I just blogged here about his very recent nuclear fusion power venture.

Trump Media began with a social media app, now it’s doing TV, AI, crypto and even nuclear power | Just The News "Though known primarily for creating Truth Social, the president’s favored Twitter alternative, the company has since leveraged the money raised through its IPO to enter the crypto market, betting markets, nuclear fusion, AI, and content streaming."
