Vulnerable Bird Species Harmed by Wind and Solar Energy

Anybody who believes that wind and solar power are environmentally friendly is a fool! We humans should not have any illusions about wind and solar power!

From the abstract:
"Renewable energy production can kill individual birds, but little is known about how it affects avian populations. We assessed the vulnerability of populations for 23 priority bird species killed at wind and solar facilities in California, USA. Bayesian hierarchical models suggested that 48% of these species were vulnerable to population-level effects from added fatalities caused by renewables and other sources. Effects of renewables extended far beyond the location of energy production to impact bird populations in distant regions across continental migration networks. Populations of species associated with grasslands where turbines were located were most vulnerable to wind. Populations of nocturnal migrant species were most vulnerable to solar, despite not typically being associated with deserts where the solar facilities we evaluated were located. ..."

"... Multiple studies published in 2013 and 2014 found that somewhere between 140,000 and 679,000 birds are killed by wind turbines annually [in the U.S. alone?]. However, the American Bird Conservatory estimates at a minimum 681,000 birds are killed annually by turbines, thanks to an 86 percent increase in wind energy capacity in the United States from 2012 to 2021. ...
The Ivanpah Solar Power Facility in the Mojave Desert, for example, is responsible for incinerating around 6,000 birds annually. ...
... powered by wind and solar would “necessitate an unprecedented worldwide expansion in mining,” ... “And those mining operations would rely primarily on fossil-fuel-powered heavy equipment, since battery-powered equipment for enormous industrial operations does not exist.”
These mining operations would also involve “removing and crushing hundreds of billions of tons of rock and ore, causing major habitat losses and widespread pollution,” ... “It would also create serious human health impacts, especially in countries that do not have modern equipment and health and safety protections.” ...
The cobalt needed for these batteries is mostly mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where more than 40,000 children currently labor in mining operations for pittance wages in unsafe and unhealthy conditions. Copper mining would also have to be dramatically expanded to meet the demand for 100 percent renewable generation, even though it takes roughly 125,000 pounds of mined, crushed, and refined ore to produce 1,000 pounds of finished copper. ..."

Turning ocean water into watts

Seems to be a similarly foolish idea like wind turbines/mills! Like wind mills, not very reliable and most likely not very environmentally friendly at all! At what point would this form of power generation affect the currents, temperature, wild life etc. of our oceans?

"The sea is an unforgiving environment. It is corrosive, fouling, energetic and forceful ... In the winter of 1988, for example, a fierce storm in Toftestallen, Norway, slammed a wave-power plant that had been installed barely three years earlier. The unhinged tower collapsed and the station had to be rebuilt, only to be destroyed again by accident during an attempted improvement three years later. In 2009, meanwhile, a dozen underwater turbine blades were wrecked by strong tides in the Bay of Fundy, Canada, less than a month after they had been plumbed in"

Turning water into watts – Physics World: The oceans seem like an obvious source of renewable energy, but there are huge technical and financial hurdles to harnessing their vast power. Stephen Ornes investigates

The Outrageous Wind Power Scam

Posted: 6/27/2019

Recently, I have blogged here about the The Outrageous Electrical Cars Scam. Let’s have a look at the global scam of wind power generation.

For our purposes here, we will focus on one of the largest onshore wind power farms in the world and the largest wind power farm in the U.S.:
Alta Wind Energy Center (AWEC) in California:
  1. Total capacity: 1,550MWh (this is roughly the continuous output (not capacity) of 1.5 typical U.S. nuclear power reactors; translates into 13,392,000 MWh per year)
  2. Construction started in 2010 and it was completed in 2013 (S1)
  3. “Spread across 3,200 acres in the foothills of the Tehachapi Mountains in Kern County” (S1)
  4. Average electricity generation per year is 3,179,263 MWh (over the period 2014-17; S2)

The scam/boondoggle consists of:
  1. Average production of electricity is only about 24% of total capacity. Or in other words, four times as much capacity of a wind power generation has to be built to compensate for the uncertainty of wind
  2. To generate the total annual electricity consumed in California you would need to build over 48,500 wind turbines (of the AWEC type). This translates into at least 1 wind turbine for every 800 inhabitants of California. For the entire U.S. it would be at least 1 turbine for every 470 inhabitants (It appears that California is more energy efficient than the rest of the U.S. or California does not have as much significant electricity consuming industries)
  3. Ridiculous government subsidies for this form of energy generation

In Germany, even the world famous tree huggers and the zealots of environmentalism have allowed huge areas of natural landscape to be spoiled and ruined by gigantic onshore and offshore wind power farms. Thousands of birds and bats die every year! The sound emissions from wind power farms are probably not entirely harmless. The production and maintenance of these wind mills is by far not environmentally friendly. Beautiful hill tops inside protected forests were sacrificed to the religion of renewable energy. And so on ...

Are there any studies on the influence of large wind power farms on local weather? I would posit that large wind power farms interfere with the flow of air if not more.

Initially, I presumed it was the extraordinary land/area use of wind power farms that would expose the scam, but it turned out it is the per head of population count of wind turbines.

P.S. I meant to add a tableau of figures that were underlying my calculations here, but for lack of time … Hope, my calculations are not completely off.
