Hundreds of women rally outside courthouse to show support for woman accused of murdering her 3 children. Really!

Did the killer have postpartum psychosis only after her third child? Why did she have three children?

What did the husband know or do about it?

Caveat: I am not familiar with the case.

"Hundreds of Lindsay Clancy supporters, many wearing pink clothing emblazoned with phrases such as "Believe," "She Needed Help" and "Peace For Lindsay," gathered Thursday outside the courthouse where she is on trial in the killings of her three children. ..."

My abusive mother was not a victim — and neither is the three children murderer Lindsay Clancy (a former labor and delivery nurse)

Update: A female Chaplain says Lindsay Clancy reported hearing 'voice' after killings. The killer heard voices after the killing? I did not know until now that the killer jumped out of the window after the crime and became paralyzed and wheel-chair bound.

Food for thought!

Was the children murderer Lindsay Clancy abusive to her children before she killed them? For how long and how abusive? What did her husband know about it and/or what did he do about it?

"Postpartum psychosis is a [very] rare, severe psychiatric emergency affecting about 1 to 2 in 1,000 women after childbirth." (Google Search) And how many women suffering from it become abusive or murderers of their own children?

P.S. My late mother was not abusive, on the contrary!

"... Then I witnessed the extraordinary outpouring of female sympathy for Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother who killed her three children in 2023.

Some Clancy girls now claim Lindsay’s poor husband, Patrick, actually killed the kids and framed her. How do they know this? Astrology of course.

Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, is now on trial for murder. Her children were Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, eight months old.

There is no dispute about who killed them. Clancy's defense admits she strangled all three children with exercise bands in the basement of the family's home while her husband, Patrick, was out picking up medicine and takeout. The question for the jury is whether she was criminally responsible when she did it.

Her lawyers say she wasn't. They argue that Clancy suffered from postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder and that psychiatric medications worsened her condition. Prosecutors say she deliberately arranged to get her husband out of the house and knew exactly what she was doing. ..."

How a vengeful noblewoman masterminded the assassination of her lover, a priest during the 14th century. His throat was cut on a busy street in London

Amazing stuff! Sundays was a favorite day for committing homicides! This seems to be quite a fascinating historical investigation of historical criminology.

Was urban lethal violence significantly higher in the medieval ages than in modern times?

Women are often referred to as the gentler sex! Well, they use poison or other men (family members, servants) to do the killing when necessary. Gender equality has dark sides too! Caution: sarcasm/satire.

The priest was not only a lover of the noblewoman, but possibly also a criminal gang member with the noblewoman and her husband.

"A Cambridge criminologist has uncovered evidence in the killing of a priest, John Forde, who had his throat cut on a busy London street almost seven centuries ago. Professor Manuel Eisner, who leads the Medieval Murder Maps project, said: "It was planned and cold-blooded, with a family member and close associates carrying it out, all of which suggests a revenge motive.""

"... The case is among hundreds catalogued by the Medieval Murder Maps project at Cambridge University’s Institute of Criminology, a database of unnatural death in England during the 14th century. ...

Records traced ... suggest that John Forde’s slaying in 1337 was a revenge killing orchestrated by a noblewoman ordered to enact years of degrading penance after the Archbishop of Canterbury discovered the clergyman was her lover – possibly from Forde himself. ...

A letter written by the Archbishop five years earlier accuses the aristocrat Ela Fitzpayne of a wide variety of adultery, including with the priest John Forde, and demands she undertake barefoot walks of shame across Salisbury Cathedral.

Another record found ... shows that, around the time of these allegations, Ela Fitzpayne conspired with her husband and John Forde to lead a gang of extortionists that raided a church priory, breaking into buildings and holding livestock to ransom.

While explicit connections remain unclear, the records suggest that John Forde went from Ela Fitzpayne’s crime gang and possibly her bed, to a player in her denunciation by the church, and, years later, a murder victim – with one of Forde’s killers recognised as Ela Fitzpayne’s brother, and two others her recent servants. .."

From the abstract:
"This study examines the spatial patterns of homicide in three 14th-century English cities—London, York, and Oxford—through the Medieval Murder Map project, which visualizes 355 homicide cases derived from coroners’ inquests.
Integrating historical criminology with contemporary spatial crime theories, we outline a new historical criminology of space, focused on how urban environments shaped patterns of lethal violence in the past.
Findings reveal similarities in all three cities.
Homicides were highly concentrated in key nodes of urban life such as markets, squares, and thoroughfares.
Temporal patterns indicate that most homicides occurred in the evening and on weekends, aligning with routine activity theory [???].
Oxford had far higher homicide rates than London and York, and a higher proportion of organized group-violence, suggestive of high levels of social disorganization and impunity.
Spatial analyses reveal distinct areas related to town-gown conflicts and violence fueled by student factionalism.
In London, findings suggest distinct clusters of homicide which reflect differences in economic and social functions.
In all three cities, some homicides were committed in spaces of high visibility and symbolic significance.
The findings highlight how public space shaped urban violence historically.
The study also raises broader questions about the long-term decline of homicide, suggesting that changes in urban governance and spatial organization may have played a crucial role in reducing lethal violence."

How some 911 callers become suspicious or even criminal suspects

Amazing stuff! Don't stop making 911 calls when you have to!

"When reporting violent events to 911, callers who fail to express expected levels of emotion and urgency may trigger suspicion that they are participants in the crime they are reporting – potentially the first step toward a wrongful conviction, Cornell research finds.

In four studies involving roughly 1,800 civilians and 300 law enforcement officers who listened to real or simulated 911 calls, researchers identified five behaviors that might make a caller seem suspicious. Conveying strong emotion and urgency reduced suspicion, while callers perceived to be communicating poorly, guarded in providing information or trying to make a favorable impression drew more suspicion.

“Having expectations for people’s demeanor on 911 calls is dangerous,”  ... “People communicate in very different ways due to cultural and personality differences, neurodivergence, disabilities, or just the intense stress of the situation. There is no ‘one size fits all’ for responses to traumatic events.” ...

The paper is part of a broader initiative studying assumptions about suspicious behaviors and their validity at predicting guilt, work that includes development of a large database of 911 calls.

The research is relevant ... to a case in which a Texas man, Robert Roberson, was convicted and sentenced to death for murdering his infant daughter based on now-debunked “shaken baby evidence.” Despite a team of medical experts and even the detective who originally arrested Roberson fighting for his exoneration, he faces execution in October. Hospital staff and police perceived Roberson as oddly unemotional when he reported the death – but ... he has been diagnosed with severe autism, which means he lacked the ability to express emotion in ways people expect. ..."

From the abstract:
"Objective: Despite research on case factors that can trigger confirmation bias in investigations leading to wrongful convictions, we know little about what sparks this chain reaction and why an innocent person initially falls under suspicion. Across four studies, we investigated what perceived behaviors exhibited by 911 callers (urgency, emotionality, cognitive load, impression management, and information management) are related to laypeople’s (Studies 1-2, 4) and police officers’ (Study 3) suspicion toward the caller.

Hypotheses: We predicted, for lay and police samples, callers perceived as more urgent or emotional would be perceived as less suspicious, whereas callers perceived as more under cognitive load, managing information, or managing impressions of themselves would be perceived as more suspicious.
We tested whether these relationships depended on caller gender—predicting gender stereotypes might play a role, particularly with emotionality.

Method: Participants (Studies 1-2, 4: online laypeople, Study 3: police officers) listened to a real 911 call (Studies 1 and 4) or a more controlled, simulated 911 call (Studies 2 and 3) by a male or female caller. We assessed behavioral predictors associated with suspicion via participants’ spontaneous impressions and scales assessing these behaviors. Participants indicated how suspicious they found the caller and how much the caller violated their expectations.

Results: Participants spontaneously mentioned the callers’ emotionality most frequently and consistently across studies (77-85%). Perceptions of callers being more urgent and emotional were associated with less suspicion and violation of expectations, while perceptions of callers engaging in more information management and impression management were associated with more suspicion and violation of expectations.
Police, but not laypeople, perceived male callers as more suspicious than female callers—despite holding 911 call scripts constant.

Conclusion: Citizens engaging in the well-intentioned act of calling 911 risk observers—including police—holding expectations for their behavior and targeting them as a suspect if they violate those expectations."

Why Rehabilitating Repeat Criminal Offenders Often Fails

Very recommendable!

Rehabilitation is a subject that has been discussed for at least the past 5-6 decades!

A sober assessment! There is no panacea yet! If one's calling is to be a criminal, then one probably remains a criminal for life.

I guess, besides offering help to change a criminal's life is close 24 hour monitoring of released repeat offenders is necessary plus significantly increased incarceration with every new crime.

Caveat: I did not read the entire long article.

"... We show how rhetoric has caused treatments to seem more successful than honest data analysis reveals them to be. Nearly all such programs have either failed or been almost impossible to replicate in clinical trials. We then detail how political narratives have bolstered misleading claims about rehabilitation’s successes and highlight the wasteful investments that have ensued, citing Washington State’s juvenile rehabilitation programs as the embodiment of all these issues. ...

For over a century, Americans have searched for ways to rehabilitate criminal offenders. Despite our best efforts, in the aggregate, we have been unable to produce even minuscule reductions in overall recidivism. As influential scholar Robert Martinson soberly concluded decades ago: some programs work for people some of the time. When new rehabilitation treatments emerge and show promise, advocates and officials too quickly react by overpromising and moralizing, before subsequent results fail to confirm early findings. ...

Though politically unsavory, the fact is that high recidivism rates are the historical norm and have never substantively changed. After a hundred years of theorizing, testing, evaluating, and criticizing, social science has consistently demonstrated that serious criminal behavior remains stubbornly stable over time, situation, and place.
Those who commit crimes today will be those who commit crimes tomorrow, and they will be the same people who commit crimes until they are incapacitated by age, infirmity, imprisonment, or death. ...

A large body of criminological and psychological evidence finds that recidivistic criminals are not accidental, adjacent, or incidental criminals. They share characteristics including hyperaggression, poor self-control, bad decision-making skills, disdain for conventions such as employment and education, social and economic parasitism, entitled attitudes, and manipulative behavior.
They see nothing wrong or immoral with their impolite and dangerous behavior. As several qualitative studies of active offenders demonstrate, many report experiencing enjoyment at terrorizing, maiming, and killing others. Criminals have friends and family who are also criminals, normalizing these traits. [Reminiscent of the Biden clan! 😊]..."

Airbnb rentals linked to increased crime rates in London neighbourhoods

Just correlation or peculiarity related to the sample chosen?

The researchers did not seem to investigate whether any criminals stayed at any AirBnB rentals.

"... London is one of the most popular Airbnb markets in the world. An estimated 4.5 million guests stayed in a London Airbnb during the period covered by the study. ...

They mapped AirDNA data from 13 calendar quarters (January 2015 to March 2018) onto ‘Lower Layer Super Output Areas’, or LSOAs. ...

Crime statistics from the UK Home Office and Greater London Authority for 6 categories – robbery, burglary, theft, anti-social behaviour, any violence, and bodily harm – were then mapped onto LSOAs populated with AirDNA data. ..."

From the abstract:
"Private short-term letting via Airbnb has exploded in the last decade, yet little is known about how this affects neighborhood crime rates. We estimate the association between Airbnb short-term letting activity and six types of police-reported crime in London, as well as an intervening mechanism, collective efficacy. We estimate these associations with maximum likelihood dynamic panel models with fixed effects (ML-SEM) using data on Airbnb lettings in 4,835 London neighborhoods observed for 13 calendar quarters. We explore mechanisms for the observed effects using multiple lag specifications and by disaggregating lettings into entire properties and spare rooms. We find that Airbnb activity is positively related to robbery, burglary, theft, and violence. These associations are attributable to lettings for entire properties rather than for rooms. Furthermore, associations are contemporaneous, as is consistent with an opportunity mechanism, rather than delayed, as would be consistent with a social control mechanism. Similarly, we find that the association between Airbnb activity and crime is not mediated by collective efficacy. Overall, these results suggest short-term letting contributes to neighborhood crime and these effects are more likely to be attributable to changes in criminal opportunity than erosion of neighborhood social control."

The Falling Black Incarceration Rate in the U.S. Really!

Recommendable, however some parts are suspect!

The underlying report is a bit weird. Just take the title "Pushing toward parity" ???

Is some of the "success" due to defund the police and systemic racism attacks against police? If so, then this is dubious!

"But disparities will persist, they report, unless at least one of three things changes. One, the racial gap in violent offending could decline; two, since black offenders tend to have longer criminal histories than whites, states could base incarceration less on criminal history [???]; and three, states could otherwise reduce the difference in “time served” between prisoners from the two racial groups. ...
State prisons have never been packed full of drug offenders—as of 2000, less than 30 percent of imprisoned blacks and 20 percent of imprisoned whites were there for drugs—but the shifting pattern is most dramatic in that category. The per capita disparity fell from 15-to-one to less than four-to-one, as the black imprisonment rate for drugs fell by more than two-thirds. (Drugs certainly haven’t become less serious of a problem in the past 20 years, but the U.S. has been incarcerating far fewer drug offenders, the racial balance of the issue has evolved as focus shifted to opioids, marijuana has been legalized in many states, and activists have had success in labeling drug enforcement racist. [???]) The disparities for violent, property, and public-order offenses also fell, but much less dramatically. ...
Beyond the arrest stage, differences in offending rates by themselves now explain more than half of the white–black incarceration gap for violent crimes. The remaining unexplained gap is not necessarily bias, but it also includes differences in criminal histories among whites and blacks arrested for the same offense, as well as differences in offense severity, both of which can result in longer sentences. As the report notes, for example, murderers make up about 30 percent of violent offenders kept in state prisons—and black “individuals were convicted in more than half (56 percent) of homicides in cases with a known assailant.” ..."

Woman sentenced to 5 years in jail for false rape claims against 2 men

Rape is often a difficult crime to prove!

How frequent are false claims of rape? False claims can ruin a man's career (think of a politician).

Unfortunately, the article does not say what her motives were.

"A woman who made a series of false rape claims has been jailed following work by some of our specialist detectives.

Cathy Richardson made a series of allegations against two men between January and May last year.

These allegations led to officers carrying out 60 investigations.

As part of these investigations, one of the men she accused was arrested and made subject to a forensic examination.

However, as officers progressed their enquiries into Richardson’s claims, they found that CCTV, phone data, and information from automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras showed the alleged attacker was not in the area at the time Richardson alleged the assaults to have taken place.

One of the men even agreed to have a GPS tracking tag fitted to his ankle which would send an alarm to police if it was destroyed or taken off.

On a number of occasions, data from the tag was analysed and showed he was not in the area when Richardson said the attack had taken place.

Richardson, 35, of North Road, Westcliff, was arrested on 28 May last year and later charged with perverting the course of justice.

She admitted 10 counts at Salisbury Crown Court on 23 May this year.

At the same court today (Friday 30 September), she was sentenced to five years and one month in prison."

Two teenagers bash 82-year-old man in head from behind, knock him down, steal his truck — along with gift he'd just bought for his wife

What the article does not mention, but the police report does, is the race of the suspects (black) nor the race of the victim. This crime was committed on 9/10/2022.

Shocking such cowards to rob an 82 year old man! To attack such an old man from behind by two attackers! It does almost not get more coward! Are these two male teenagers just the victims of so called systemic racism?

A violent attack, like this one, on an older person should almost automatically double the prison term!

"Update as of 9/30/22: As a result of the recent request for the public’s assistance, both suspects have been identified and arrest warrants were issued. Both suspects are juveniles, so their identity will not be released. On the morning of September 30, 2022, Suspect #1, a 17-year-old Philadelphia resident, was arrested by Abington and Philadelphia Police at his home. He was charged with robbery and related offenses and detained at the Montgomery County Youth Center. Police are actively searching for Suspect #2. ...

Parents indicted for raping their daughter for 13 years and prostituting her

What a horror and sick story! One of the takeaways is that this was only possible, because the mother collaborated and facilitated these repeated crimes.

Not only that, the mother actively participated in the sex crimes against her daughter.

As is so often the case, there is a woman involved facilitating rape! This is a subject rarely mentioned.

P.S. This is actually the second such case reported out of Israel. I blogged here about a similar case just two months ago. This is a little bit odd!

Couple indicted for raping daughter frequently over three years to profit from miscarriage in Israel

This is a brutal and horrifying Me Too event! What a depraved crime! The mother is alleged to be fully complicit in these crimes!

This begs the usual questions:
  1. How often actually are women complicit when a rape is committed?
  2. Why are not more women charged with accessory to rape? Is this a form of gender discrimination (Stereotype: Rapes are committed by men. Period).

On A Retrospective Observational Study of Psychosocial Determinants and Psychiatric Diagnoses of Mass Shooters in the United States study of 2022

This is perhaps one of the few, recent and comprehensive studies ever conducted in the U.S. about mental state of mass shooters. I did not have time to read the whole study.

Unfortunately, the study seems to come up short on the age of the mass shooter or any substance abuse behavior. The study also puts more emphasis on those mass shooters, who survived the mass shooting in contrast to those who died.

From the abstract:
"Our aim was to better understand the underlying psychiatric, psychosocial, and psychodynamic aspects of mass shootings in the United States (US). The Mother Jones database of 115 mass shootings from 1982–2019 was used to study retrospectively 55 shooters in the US. After developing a psychiatric-assessment questionnaire, psychiatric researchers gathered multiple psychosocial factors and determined diagnoses and treatment by evaluating the clinical evidence obtained by interviewing forensic psychiatrists, who had assessed the assailant, and/or by reviewing psychiatric evaluations conducted during the judicial proceedings. All 35 surviving-assailant cases were selected. Additionally, 20 cases where the assailant died at the time of the shootings were randomly selected from the remaining 80 cases. The majority of assailants (87.5%) had misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated or undiagnosed and untreated psychiatric illness. Most of the assailants also experienced profound estrangement not only from families, friends, and classmates but most importantly from themselves. Being marginalized and interpersonally shunned rendered them more vulnerable to their untreated psychiatric illness and to radicalization online, which fostered their violence. While there are complex reasons that a person is misdiagnosed or not diagnosed, there remains a vital need to decrease the stigma of mental illness to enable those with severe psychiatric illness to be more respected, less marginalized, and encouraged to receive effective psychotherapeutic and pharmacologic treatments."
