From the Calvin Coolidge speech “The Inspiration of the Declaration,” delivered on America’s 150th birthday on July 5th, 1926

Maybe the celebration of the 250th birthday of the U.S. Declaration of Independence would be incomplete without this quote:

“If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final.

If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions.

If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people.”

The forgotten figures who influenced America’s Founders with Amity Schlaes

Recommendable!

"Today we assume that Britain, or perhaps Rome, was the most important influence on the American Founding. To claim that any other nation’s influence predominated is to meet with incredulity.

Yet back in the 1890s, many Americans rated the Dutch influence on our Framers as strong. Perhaps even as strong as Britain’s. ...

Our Dutch Revolution

The American Founders were hardly the first in history to insist that people have the right to choose their own leaders.

What precedent could the Founders cite?

The Dutch experience, for one.

President Coolidge made this point in a 1926 speech marking the anniversary of America’s Founding.

The right of the people to choose their own rulers, Coolidge said, “was set out with a good deal of detail by the Dutch when, as early as July 26, 1581, they declared their independence of Philip of Spain.” ...

the federal republic the American Founders created had “a structure closer to the Dutch Republic than to the British King-in-Parliament.”

... examines the Dutch leader William of Orange and “the astonishing and unlikely events known as the Glorious Revolution of 1688–89.” ...

The Line from Glasgow to Philadelphia

... The thinkers of the Scottish Enlightenment. ... father of the Scottish Enlightenment, Francis Hutcheson.

Three of Hutcheson’s most important arguments ... became integral to America’s case for independence. ...

Hutcheson outlined the right of rebellion, the right of colonies to seek independence from their mother country, and the concept of unalienable rights. ..."

Who was the last conservative to win the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination?

According to the Coolidge Foundation it was John W. Davis (1873-1955), who ran and lost against Calvin Coolidge in 1924!

In the 21st century this party has become the Dimocratic Party. Very bad for a two party only democracy like the US.

How to Fight for Tax Cuts with Andrew Mellon and President Coolidge

Maybe here is a guide for President Trump! 😊

"Tax reform isn’t easy, but it is possible. Even dramatic tax reform.

Today, when many doubt that proposition, it’s useful to look back at another tax reform, the tax cut campaign of the 1920s. That tax reform took effort and years. Its heroes include names we have almost forgotten, such as Congressman Nicholas Longworth of Ohio and Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon. The campaign endured many setbacks. But the reform became law, and it did succeed, making strong prosperity possible. Today, with so many doubters, the how and why of that century-ago endeavor, and its heroes, make for a timely story. ..."

A Tax Tutorial for an Indebted Nation — The Coolidge Review

Recommendable! Will the next U.S. President lower taxes and cut spending?

Quick reminder: US government debt stands now at about $35 trillion dollars or more than 120% of GDP. Simply unsustainable!

"... The Roaring Twenties are so named to convey the extraordinary, one might say transformative, economic growth that took place during that period. The car replaced the horse and buggy; indoor plumbing became the norm, not the exception—as did electricity in the home. The age of Gatsby was indeed great.

A driving force behind this economic growth was President Calvin Coolidge’s tax policy. At the outset of his administration, Coolidge and Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon hypothesized that lowering marginal tax rates would stimulate economic growth sufficiently that total tax revenues, despite lower rates, would actually increase. History proved them right. And to think they did all this before Art Laffer was born. ...

By lowering marginal tax rates from 73 percent to 25 percent, Coolidge’s predecessor, Warren Harding, and Coolidge unleashed a tsunami of productive work. At 25 percent, tax revenues, along with all other boats, rose. ...

FDR raised marginal tax rates to 79 percent. ...

Coolidge called overtaxation legalized larceny. There were always municipal bonds when tax rates became confiscatory. But there is no school of economists who think municipal bonds are an engine of healthy economic growth. ..."

President Calvin Coolidge: The United Nation (He gave two speeches on Memorial Day 5/24/1924)

In my opinion, the American Civil War was totally unnecessary and preventable! Most likely it was one of the earliest major events in American history that ushered in the age of big government. The war was not about ending slavery, but preventing a perfectly legal secession. The American Civil War was also contrary to the belief of the Founding Fathers and Mothers in a gradual and eventual elimination of slavery. From this perspective, e.g. Abraham Lincoln was no great president!

"What’s the meaning of Memorial Day?

Back in Calvin Coolidge’s era, the holiday remained close to its origins: honoring the soldiers who died in the Civil War. Soldiers on both sides.

That’s why, a hundred years ago, President Coolidge delivered not one but two Memorial Day speeches…

…one at Arlington National Cemetery’s Confederate Memorial and the other at the Arlington Memorial Amphitheater. ...

Coolidge acknowledges the issues that divided North and South but emphasizes that both sides have much in common.

And Coolidge calls on us to rededicate ourselves to union and peace. America’s flag, he says, floats over all of us, no matter our differences. America has emerged from conflict as a “united nation.”

Coolidge offers another bracing reminder:
“American citizenship is a high estate. He who holds it is the peer of kings.”"

Celebrate the President Coolidge Centennial

Calvin Coolidge was probably one of the best U.S. presidents in the 20th century and beyond!

"It was on August 2, 1923 when word came to Vice President Calvin Coolidge that President Warren Harding had suddenly passed away. Coolidge, at home in Plymouth Notch, personally got the news when his father woke him in the middle of the night. It was also Coolidge’s father, Colonel John Coolidge, who administered the Oath of Office in the family’s sitting room at 2:47 AM on August 3. This kerosene-lit inauguration, unique in American history, remains emblematic of the common-sense values that guided Coolidge as America’s thirtieth president.
The Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation invites you to celebrate this special moment in America’s history at a series of events to be held August 2-5, 2023 in Plymouth Notch. ..."

What do Presidents Coolidge (R) and Cleveland (D) have in common? A specific use of veto power

From the latest Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation newsletter:

"Cal and Grover: A Tradition of Restraint

One question probed at the Foundation’s recent Library of Congress conference was a basic one: what culture made the Republican Calvin Coolidge? Where did Coolidge get his model of restraint? One surprising answer may be: from a Democratic president, Grover Cleveland. Cleveland, a former governor of New York, served as president twice in nonconsecutive terms, once while Coolidge was in high school (1885 to 1889) and once as Coolidge was finishing college and embarking on his career as a lawyer (1893 to 1897). As Troy Senik’s new biography, A Man of Iron, shows, Cleveland dealt with many of the same challenges that would later confront President Coolidge—and demonstrated restraint could succeed both as policy and with the electorate.

Cleveland’s primary tool for restraining government expansion was the presidential veto. Cleveland vetoed 414 pieces of legislation, a record that makes Coolidge’s one-and-a-half term veto level—50—look downright moderate. Given Cleveland’s habit of saying “no,” it’s especially striking that the nation rewarded Cleveland with a second term in 1892. ..."

How Calvin Coolidge Responded to a Voter Concerned That Republicans Had Nominated a Black Dentist For Congress by Lawrence Reed

Recommendable! What an underrated U.S. President!

"... For multiple reasons, Americans of every ethnicity should get better acquainted with our 30th president. Coolidge was the last chief executive to balance the budget in every year of his presidency. His administration also cut tax rates dramatically and reduced the national debt substantially. After five and a half years in the White House, he left the federal government smaller than he had found it. ... Surprisingly, he also held more press conferences than any other president, with an average of nearly two conferences per week. ..."

What Calvin Coolidge’s 'Common Sense' Vetoes of Two Farm Bills Can Teach about Price Controls by Lawrence Reed

Recommendable!
