Researchers have engineered mice that menstruate

Is this not a case of animal cruelty in the name of science? Just thinking out loud! Where are the animal activists when you need them! However, I suppose this kind of research is very useful.

Notice here also the apparent deliberate confusion of female animals and any animals! When ideology trumps science? I bet, these researchers did not engineer male animals to menstruate.

"Efforts to study the female reproductive system have long been set back by societal stigma—but also by the problematic fact that most laboratory animals don’t menstruate. Now, researchers have engineered mice that get a period in response to certain drugs.

Among the handful of animals that menstruate—which include large primates, four bat species, and the elephant shrew—the inner lining of the uterus, or endometrium, thickens before the release of an egg from the ovary. The layer then breaks down and is shed if no viable embryo appears.

In the new work, a team of researchers engineered the endometrium of standard lab mice to react to signals that drive menstruation in other animals. They equipped the cells with a receptor protein that, when activated by a drug, amplifies their sensitivity to calcium, a trigger of decidualization which prepares the endometrium for embryo implantation. When the researchers raised those animals’ progesterone levels and stimulated the receptors, the mice produced a 3–4 day period about 3 days later, with hallmarks of human menstruation including an enlarged uterus and expanded endometrial blood vessels. ..."

From the abstract:
"During menstruation, an inner layer of the endometrium is selectively shed, while an outer, progenitor-containing layer is preserved to support repeated regeneration. Progress in understanding this compartmentalization has been hindered by the lack of suitable animal models, as mice and rats do not menstruate.
Here, we present transgenic mouse models that recapitulate the key anatomical, functional, and transcriptional features of human menstruation through targeted chemogenetic activation of premenstrual differentiation.
Using single-cell spatial transcriptomics, we define a new paradigm for spatially regulated fibroblast differentiation that drives pre-menstrual endometrial layering and ultimately determines the extent of tissue shedding.
Our results revise a century-old view of endometrial shedding and regeneration and establish new transgenic mice as powerful tools to advance menstruation research."

Wind turbines kill millions of bats every year

This huge skandal has been known for decades, but it has been largely covered up and silenced! I have blogged about this skandal here before.

Where are the animal rights activists when you really need them? Paid off by the wind power lobby?

"For all of wind energy’s benefits [???], it causes problems for bats. The winged mammals seem to be unusually attracted to turbines, often loitering in the air next to them. As a result, millions of them slam into turbine blades every year and die, making turbines one of the top killers of the animals worldwide. But what exactly lures bats to turbines has remained a mystery. ..."

From the abstract:
"Wind energy’s rapid expansion has led to unintended consequences for wildlife, with migratory bats among the species most at risk. The behavioural mechanisms underlying collisions remain poorly understood, but one hypothesis is that bats are attracted to wind turbine structures. Vision is important to bat orientation and obstacle avoidance, yet it has been relatively understudied in the context of bat–turbine interactions. We hypothesize that light reflected off turbine surfaces could attract bats, acting as a sensory pollutant that may increase collision risk. To test whether reflective turbine surfaces elicit attraction, we flew 242 Lasiurus cinereus and 154 Lasionycteris noctivagans through Y-maze assays.
Bats were at least twice as likely to fly towards white turbine blade sections compared to less reflective black ones. This attraction intensified when the alternative exit was a dark, empty flyway, with 74% of L. cinereus and 97% of L. noctivagans flying towards the white turbine blade. These findings provide evidence that visual sensory pollutants could underlie bat–turbine interactions, and if so, wind turbines could be ecological traps."

Most likely birds, not bats, but the issue is the same!

A giant tortoise was caught stalking, killing and eating a baby bird

To paraphrase Hobbes: "... and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death: and the life of [a baby bird], solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short"

Who would have thought that a tortoise can be a carnivore when the opportunity arises!

A Seychelles giant tortoise lunges towards a noddy tern chick in the first documented instance of a tortoise hunting. Moments after this frame was captured, the tortoise killed the chick, later swallowing it whole.

Denmark to cull up to 17 million mink amid coronavirus fears

Updated: 12/10/2020, 11/8/2020, 11/7/2020

Update of 12/10/2020

Reuters reports: "Decomposing mink buried in dirt pits in Denmark following a nationwide cull may have contaminated groundwater ... citing a government agency report. ... The logistical challenge of disposing of such a large number of dead animals prompted authorities to bury some of the mink in pits in a military area in western Denmark under two metres of soil.
The government later said it wanted to dig up those mink again after some resurfaced from the mass graves, most likely due to gasses from the decomposition process pushing the mink out of the ground. ..."

Have the politicians in Denmark gone crazy? This mass killing of animals on grounds of suspicions contradicts the otherwise famously common sense people of Denmark! To wipe out a whole industry for which Denmark is famous for is insane! A significant number of these farms are run by small family businesses.

Is this a deliberate campaign by animal rights activists? What are the ulterior motives here?

Did the elites and politicians in Denmark not know that a nasal spray for ferrets was recently developed that can prevent the spread of Covid-19? (See Could a Nasal Spray Prevent Coronavirus Transmission? | Columbia University Irving Medical Center)

There are apparently similar culls planned in e.g. the Netherlands.

"Denmark is the world's biggest producer of mink fur and its main export markets are China and Hong Kong."

"The order could spell the permanent end of the mink industry in Denmark, where the product is the country's third largest agricultural export. So far, 207 of Denmark's 1,139 mink farms and 12 people have been infected with the mutated coronavirus. Government officials say if the problem is left unchecked, the mink could eventually build up a reservoir of the mutation, making the outbreak harder to fight in humans." (Source: WSJ)

Denmark to cull up to 17 million mink amid coronavirus fears - BBC News Denmark will cull all its mink - as many as 17 million - after a mutated form of coronavirus that can spread to humans was found on mink farms.

Spread of coronavirus in mink hits 'scary buttons' but experts urge calm "In this case, Danish authorities say they’ve found some genetic changes that might undermine the effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccines currently in development.
But is this latest twist in the Covid-19 saga reason to be deeply concerned? Several experts STAT consulted suggested the answer to that question is probably not. ... Experts outside the country are not clear what that claim is based on. While there has been some information released about the mutations that have been recorded, it isn’t yet enough to support such a bold claim, said Marion Koopmans, head of virology at Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, where a lot of the analyses from viruses from the Dutch mink outbreaks have been conducted."

Do you know cetaceans? Meet the world's smartest animals behind primates

The first part is very disturbing! It shows that animals are killing a prey intentionally slowly and make the prey suffer for an extend period of time! I am not sure I have ever seen such a cruel behavior in the animal world.
Is there not a widely held belief that only humans could be cruel to other humans or animals?
