What happened to pacifism and the non violence principle in the 21st century?

I am afraid the historic lessons of the 20th century with two World Wars, the Cold War and the use of the first nuclear weapons have been unlearned by the end of the first quarter of the 21st century!

This is a sad state of affairs at the beginning of the second quarter of the 21st century! It is certainly a regression/reversal for humanity! What will be the consequences?

When Cities in major democratic countries Cancel New Year’s Celebrations. Really!

Bad news! When major democracies don't have a backbone or are spineless!

History is not kind to weakness and loosers! Appeasement led to World War II! What happened to peace through strengths?

"Major cities worldwide have canceled or scaled back New Year’s Eve celebrations amid security concerns following recent attacks and an FBI-foiled bombing plot in Los Angeles.

Paris canceled its traditional Champs-Élysées concert over crowd safety fears, replacing it with a pre-recorded broadcast while keeping fireworks at the Arc de Triomphe, while Tokyo scrapped the Shibuya Countdown Event, citing public drunkenness and crowd control risks.

Sydney’s Bondi Beach canceled its fireworks following the recent ISIS-inspired Hanukkah attack that killed 15 people, while Hong Kong replaced its Victoria Harbour fireworks with a smaller laser show.

The cancellations come as Times Square prepares for a million revelers with heightened NYPD security, though travel advisers report more people are opting for private, exclusive celebrations over massive public gatherings."

From the US Postal Service

I was just shocked this morning when I opened my daily USPS email titled "USPS Informed/Coming to you soon"

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” George Santayana in 1905

Does this USPS picture not look eerily similar to this famous/infamous photo below dating 1963? USPS is mired in the DEI ideology!

LLM Rights Historical Wrongs or whitewashes history of Northern California property deeds

Food for thought!

"In Northern California, old property deeds may still include racial clauses: language, made illegal decades ago, that was designed to ban people of color from owning or living in certain homes.

The state of California now requires counties to find and remove them, but manually combing through millions of documents would take years. Researchers used AI to find them automatically. ...

at Stanford University and Princeton University fine-tuned a large language model to find racial clauses in deeds for property in the California county of Santa Clara.

Key insight: Manual and keyword searches may fail to catch racial clauses if they’re obscured by subtle wording or errors in optical character recognition (OCR). But a fine-tuned large language model can understand context, identify relevant phrases, and avoid potential false alarms like the surnames Black or White. ...

How it works: The authors used an OCR system to extract text from 5.2 million pages of Santa Clara property deeds filed between 1850 and 1980. They drew examples from that corpus to form training and validation datasets and then processed the rest to find deeds that contained racial clauses. ..."

What an odd and dangerous couple: Putin and Biden

Humanity gets close to a World War III when history pairs up a megalomaniac and war criminal Putin the Terrible with a lifelong, pathological, and serial liar and senile, demented, and corrupt 46th President.

What does the former KGB agent Putin the Terrible know about the corruption of the 46th President and his clan? Maybe one day we will find out!

The massive, many kilometers long, multi-level tunnel system in Gaza

What a gigantic waste of resources! And for what purpose?

How much did naive, foolish Western countries pay for it?

One can only hope that the people living in Gaza finally learnt the lesson! Supporting or tolerating fanatic, cowardly killers and mass murderers among their midst is not a good idea and should be prevented going forward!

U.S. YouGov Poll finds 20% of young people under 30 think Holocaust is a 'myth'

Concerning and disturbing, if not shocking! Every fifths young adult?

“Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness. When change is absolute there remains no being to improve and no direction is set for possible improvement: and when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” George Santayana

"... Americans who believe that the Holocaust is a myth include a significant number of young adults: 20% of people under 30 strongly agree or tend to agree that the Holocaust it is a myth, compared to fewer than 1% of people 65 and older. ...
While few Americans dispute the Holocaust, somewhat larger shares do tend to agree with certain negative statements about Israel, including that “The interests of Israelis are at odds with the interests of the rest of the world” (18%), that “Israel has too much control over global affairs” (19%), and that “Israel exploits Holocaust victimhood for its own purposes” (20%). Even more (27%) tend to agree that “Israel is deliberately trying to wipe out the Palestinian population.” These negative assessments of Israel are more often held by young adults and by Democrats than by older adults and by Republicans, reflecting the political and age differences seen in other polling on the Israel-Hamas war."

"... Thirty percent of respondents said they “did not know whether the Holocaust is a myth,” while 28% adopted the anti-Semitic statement that Jews “wield too much power in America.” ..."

Poll finds 20% of young people think Holocaust is a 'myth' | Just The News Last week, a new Economist/YouGov poll found one in five young Americans stated that the Holocaust is myth ...

Plenty of crusades at the end of the first quarter of the 21st century

Is it not curious how history repeats itself as if humans are inherently  incapable of learning from history! This is a very sad fact to say the least!

There you have the current crusades of DEI, ESG, Global Warming/Climate Change, faux racism (illegal discrimination based on skin color), white old men, microaggressions and the list goes on and on!

Human progress seems significantly slower than molasses in this respect!

The Founding Fathers: 6 Prophetic Warnings That Are Coming True

Very recommendable!

Credits to Michael Lewis who in his YouTube video of 2/23/2021 quoted extensively from the below article!

Here is just an excerpt:
"... Benjamin Franklin worried that a salaried bureaucracy could breed career politicians.

In 1787, Franklin stood before the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, warning against a generously salaried congress: “Sir, there are two passions which have a powerful influence in the affairs of men. These are ambition and avarice — the love of power and the love of money… Place before the eyes of such men a post of honor, that shall, at the same time, be a place of profit, and they will move heaven and earth to obtain it. ...”

Franklin’s concerns were clearly not heeded. While the first members of Congress were paid $6 per day [how much is that actually in today's U.S. dollars. According to this source it is $30. Thus, it translated into $180 per day in today's money. Did first members of Congress really receive $6 per day back then?], members today receive a base salary of $174,000, placing them above 90 percent of American earners. This does not include additional annual allowances, which can run in the millions. Franklin also warned about the quality of leaders a hefty paycheck would attract:

“It will not be the wise and moderate, the lovers of peace and good order, the men fittest for trust. It will be the bold and the violent, the men of strong passions and indefatigable activity in their selfish pursuits. These will thrust themselves into your government and be your rulers. “ ...

Thomas Jefferson dreaded the politicization of the Supreme Court.

In an 1821 letter to Nathaniel Macon, Jefferson expressed concerns about the politicization of judicial power:

“Our government is now taking so steady a course as to show by what road it will pass to destruction, to wit, by consolidation first, and then corruption…. The engine of consolidation will be the federal judiciary; the two other branches the corrupting and corrupted instruments.” ...

James Madison warned that an unarmed people and biased press would breed tyranny.

In his 1830 autobiography, Madison outlined the preconditions necessary for tyrannical rule:

“Oppressors can tyrannize only when they achieve a standing army, an enslaved press, and a disarmed populace.”"

The World Behind A Mask

The crazy world we live in now: A fairly harmless virus (SARS-Cov-2) gives governments all over the world an excuse to order or cause a shut down of their respective economies. Same governments then use massive amounts of taxpayer money and debt to provide finance their shut down economy! On top of that media and science have fueled mass panic and hysteria!

To lose face and faith in common sense! These hard lessons of history in the 20th year of the 21st century will hopefully be with us for a long time! The return of pervasive medieval superstition was obvious!

One major lesson should be: Politicians should not shut down a complex and still little understood, but very important and essential organism like the economy for no good reason!

On Damnatio Memoriae

Posted: 2/13/2020

It is incredible how old this concept is, although it seems the term was not coined before 1689.
What to do with individuals that seek fame or notoriety by doing most evil things? How to discourage other individuals from imitating those who went before?

One of the most often quoted and most ancient examples of damnatio memoriae, or oblivion, as a punishment was meted out by the peoples of Ephesus after arsonist Herostratus set fire to the Temple of Artemis in the 4th century BC, one of the Seven Wonders of antiquity. “Herostratus was then captured and tortured on the rack,[5] where he confessed to having committed the arson in an attempt to immortalize his name.” (S2) “His acts prompted the creation of a damnatio memoriae law forbidding anyone to mention his name, orally or in writing. The law was ultimately ineffective ... Thus, Herostratus has become a metonym for someone who commits a criminal act in order to become famous.” (S2)

Are there any good reasons why we should remember the individual perpetrator?
Does it not suffice to learn about the personality of the individual, to analyze the incident and to seek to prevent future evil acts?

Debunking The Lasting Myth Of Poverty In The Early Industrial Revolution

Posted: 9/18/2019

I have had serious doubts for many years regarding the still predominant narrative about the severe poverty and worker exploitation during the early phase of the Industrial Revolution as it happened in Great Britain. Charles Dickens famous stories and Karl Marx and his sugar daddy Friedrich Engels stoked the narrative early on.

“Were there no poor people before that? (There were, obviously.) There are a number of possible answers – an increase in the concentration of poverty with growing urbanization and industrialization, which made poverty more visible; the rising standard of living, which made poverty seem less “normal”; or ... a more visible contrast between wealthy owners and poorer workers” (S1; emphasis added)

I may add:
  1. Yes, perhaps the contrast between wealthy owners and poor workers became more visible. Perhaps, there were suddenly many more affluent and wealthy citizens around, while in previous centuries wealth was more invisible and highly concentrated with the nobility and upper echelons of clergy.
  2. Many of the nouveau rich were self made and came from humble beginnings
  3. I would bet there were relatively fewer poor people during this time than in the centuries before if you adjust e.g. for population growth
  4. Above all, poverty is such a strong relative phenomenon depending on time, location, culture and much more. E.g. a person in Western countries, who is in our time considered to be poor, would have been seen as a well off person just a few decades ago. Like beauty, poverty is to some extent more in the eye of the beholder. Greed and envy do the rest!

Possibly A New Chapter In The Rivalry Of India And China?

Posted: 7/21/2019

The long history of these two great civilizations of the East has not always been harmonious between the two of them.

It appears that India lately is becoming more wary of the possible Chinese spying and influencing via popular social media applications. “India’s IT ministry has asked Chinese video app TikTok, one of the world’s most popular, to explain how it collects user data and creates awareness for safe use of its platform” (S1)

Compensated Emancipation Of Slaves

Posted: 6/22/2019

An Unnecessary War

I have long and repeatedly argued here that the American Civil War was totally unnecessary and unconstitutional! Secession of states was legal, but the preservation of the union by any means including war was blatantly illegal!

The negative ramifications of the American Civil War have been many and they still affect today. Big Government is one of the consequences of this civil war!

Compensated Emancipation

I have to thank Larry Elder to direct my attention to this subject in one of his recent Facebook posts. However, Larry Elder quoted the Independent article (S1) in support of defeating those ridiculous compensation claims by the left!

Whether you like it or not, compensated emancipation (S2) was certainly one way to end slavery without blood shed! In their great wisdom, Great Britain and other countries chose this route to end slavery! “The British Empire enacted a policy of compensated Emancipation for its colonies in 1833, followed by Denmark, France in 1848, and the Netherlands in 1863.” (S2; emphasis added)

So the U.S. Congress as well as the northern states egregiously failed to pass legislation to compensate slave owners despite the obvious lessons of these European countries! So failed the abolitionists to come together and offer to buy slaves in large numbers or to compensate individual slave owners to give up slavery!

“Only in the District of Columbia, which fell under direct Federal auspices, was compensated emancipation enacted. On April 16, 1862, President Lincoln signed the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act. This law prohibited slavery in the District, forcing its 900-odd slaveholders to free their slaves, with the government paying owners an average of about $300 for each.” (S2; emphasis added)

The Many Muslim Crusades

Posted: 2/28/2015

Those who did not learn history are prone to make huge mistakes! U.S. President Obama recently stated that Christianity was not a peaceful religion because of the Crusades and Inquisition.

This man and too many other Westerners are willfully and completely oblivious or ignorant of the history of Islam.

The history starts with the founder and conqueror called prophet Muhammad!
Islams many attacks over centuries on Europe: Spain, Malta, Rome, Constantinople, Vienna ...
Islamic conquest of North Africa, Egypt, Israel, Jerusalem ...
How about the brutal Mongolian conqueror Tamerlane
And so on and so on

This is a stark reminder that government run public education in Western countries is of awfully low quality. We need more history lessons on the curriculum!

Lessons From Opera Un Ballo In Maschera

Posted: 7/20/2014

Trigger

Yesterday, I listened to a song from this opera by Giuseppe Verdi using the Internet.

Lessons

  1. Giuseppe Verdi had to rewrite the score for his opera because of censors in Neapel and Rome who probably did not like the idea that this opera covered a regicide and an attempt to overthrow an absolute monarchy after the French Revolution and American Independence
  2. Verdi had to change location and character names from the original Swedish to Italian
  3. One of the opera’s main characters is a famous, female fortune teller who appears to have been quite influential on Swedish politics during her time, i.e. Ulrica Arfvidsson (She deserves a blog post of her own, see here)
  4. On 1 January 1955, Marian Anderson (She too deserves a blog post of her own, see here), singing the role of Ulrica, broke the "color barrier" at the Metropolitan Opera, becoming the first African-American vocal soloist to appear with that company.

The New Deal All Over Again

Forgotten Lessons Of History

Those, who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. In times of crisis humans often resort to desparate, but foolish measures. Since the beginning of this millenium we are witnessing a repeat of the horrible New Deal. History does not repeat itself, but similar patterns do thanks to human nature. The ability of humans to learn from their mistakes is still very limited and very slow.

Political Power Excelled In Ignorance And Arrogance

We experienced two severe recessions within about a decade, the last one is called the Great Recession. Our elected political leadership turned out again to be quite inept and clueless about economics. Not only that, our political leadership became so arrogant and foolish as to attempt to subjugate free markets. This is sometimes referred to as primacy of politics. However, free markets are an expression of the free will of the people.

Awful Legislation, Bailouts, And Breaches

What our elected political leaders have come up with since the beginning of this millenium is a long list of awful deeds:
·         International contracts were severely breached (European Monetary Union)
·         Bailouts for so called too big too fail companies instead of bankruptcy and bailouts for profligate governments
·        Monstrous legislation like Sarbanes-Oxley Act, Dodd-Frank Act and Consumer Protection Act, or Obamacare was passed
·         And much more
