Beyond the sea walls: Underwater archaeology reveals the hidden scale of ancient Mediterranean ports

Recommendable!

"... To get a fresh perspective from under the sea, researchers launched SHIPs (2023–2028), a multiyear underwater archaeology project combining hands-on fieldwork across the Mediterranean and a major freshwater lake.
By approaching harbors from the water rather than the shore, the project maps the different elements of a port system and examines how they worked together.

They discovered that anchoring areas beyond the formal stone walls played a decisive role in how much traffic a port could handle. Judging a port's capacity by its surviving stone docks alone overlooks the many ships accommodated beyond them.

Ships anchored in sheltered natural bays, were beached along open coastlines or moored in deeper waters beyond the harbor walls. These practices reshaped how researchers view harbor capacity in the ancient harbors of Caesarea, Terracina and Port-Vendres. ..."

From the abstract:
"The SHIPs project examines ancient harbours from a maritime perspective, analysing integrated harbour systems across contrasting environments in the Mediterranean region. Application of standardised analyses demonstrates that extra-basin anchorage zones played a decisive role in determining harbour capacity and enables more robust evaluation and comparative ranking of ancient ports."

Somali Pirates continue Hijackings of vessels since April 2026 of at least 8 vessels

Another reason why crude oil prices are so high!

Where are the coward European powers when you need them! These pirates e.g. should be arrested and subjected to martial law by the European powers!

"Somali pirates have hijacked at least four international commercial vessels off the coast of northern Somalia’s Puntland state during this period, including two in mid-August.
Three of the vessels were fuel tankers, while the other ... was a cargo ship reportedly carrying Turkish military equipment. Suspected Somali pirates have also attempted at least four additional hijackings since May, according to the UN International Maritime Organization. ...

This level of piracy has not occurred since the peak of Somali piracy over a decade ago. Somali pirates averaged 33 hijackings annually from 2005 to 2011 and conducted 15 hijackings in 2012. ..."

Saudi Arabia’s vast crude oil exports now increasingly depend on the Suez Canal

Maybe it is time to improve and enlarge the old and narrow Suez Canal?

"Since the Iran war began, Saudi Arabia has bypassed the Strait of Hormuz by shipping oil through the Bab-al Mandeb Strait in the Red Sea. Now Houthi attacks are threatening that workaround, forcing more crude onto a longer, costlier and technically challenging journey through the Suez Canal."

The U.S. is strangling an illicit network of more than 1,400 dark fleet tankers moving crude oil for Venezuela, Russia, and Iran

So many?

"More than 1,400 so-called dark fleet ships have moved sanctioned oil for years. WSJ explains how tankers carrying Venezuelan, Russian and Iranian oil evade detection and how the Trump administration has created a playbook for a global crackdown on these vessels."

Trump orders blockade of ‘sanctioned oil tankers’ into Venezuela and declares regime a foreign terrorist organization

Good news! Hurt dictators, where it hurts most! Dictators are a dangerous anachronism in the 21st century!

President Trump is turning up the heat! First such an oil tanker was seized a short while ago.

Then María Corina Machado wins Nobel Peace Prize in absentia!

After the Monroe Doctrine comes the President Trump Doctrine?

"President Donald Trump said Tuesday he is ordering a blockade of all “sanctioned oil tankers” into Venezuela, ramping up pressure on the country’s authoritarian leader Nicolás Maduro in a move that seemed designed to put a tighter chokehold on the South American country’s economy. ..."

"President Donald Trump increased pressure on the Venezuelan government Tuesday by designating its regime a "foreign terrorist organization" and ordering a “complete and total” blockade of oil tankers moving in and out of Venezuela. ..."

How volcanoes and famine caused the Black Death coming via the Black Sea

What a chain of events during the Little Ice Age (about 1300 to about 1850 CE)!

"... These lines of evidence all pointed to violent volcanic eruptions around 1345, which would have dumped sulfur and ash into the atmosphere and caused a wet chill across Europe and the Mediterranean.

Written records showed that these weather conditions, in turn, caused simultaneous crop failures in Spain, France, Italy, Egypt, and the Levant. To prevent famine, Italian port cities like Venice, Pisa, and Genoa used their trade connections with the Mongols of the Golden Horde to import grain from the Black Sea Region in 1347. Unfortunately, the grain likely contained fleas infected with Yersinia pestis—and thus the plague jumped to rodents, followed by humans. ..."

From the abstract:
"The first wave of the second plague pandemic, the Black Death, claimed much of Europe’s human population in just a few years after 1347 CE. While it is accepted that the causative bacterium Yersinia pestis originated from wildlife rodent populations in central Asia and reached Europe via the Black Sea region, reasons for the timing, spread and virulence of the onset of the Black Death are still debated.
Here, we argue that a post-volcanic climate downturn and trans-Mediterranean famine from 1345–1347 CE forced the Italian maritime republics of Venice, Genoa and Pisa to activate their well-established supply network and import grain from the Mongols of the Golden Horde around the Sea of Azov in 1347 CE.
This climate-driven change in long-distance grain trade not only prevented large parts of Italy from starvation but also introduced the plague bacterium to Mediterranean harbours and fueled its rapid dispersal across much of Europe."

Downsides of China’s global port investments go beyond immediate security risks

A very timely article given the recent opening of the Chinese port in Peru!

"Chinese companies own or operate at least one port on every continent except Antarctica. These investments present more than immediate security concerns; they position China to fully exploit the economic potential of ports at the expense of other countries.

And with Chinese companies controlling development of a port, the government in Beijing can interfere in physical development of the facility, perhaps to ensure that navally useful infrastructure isn’t built. ...

But the ordinary civilian activity of a Chinese company controlling the development of ports can have negative consequences for the host nation and others. As is seen in many industries, one Chinese business will often prefer to work with another, with the result that China has maximum exposure to potential profits.

We saw a step towards this last month in relation to Darwin Port [Australia], the commercial operation in Darwin Harbour. As the ABC reported, Port of Darwin signed a memorandum with the Port of Shenzhen for ‘friendly cooperation’. The aim is to increase trade links between the ports, which would have to mean Chinese companies, such as shipping lines, deepening economic involvement in Darwin Port.

Situated in southern China, the Port of Shenzhen is one of the busiest and fastest-growing in the world.

Interestingly, this agreement was not announced in Australia, and after the ABC reported it there was no public discussion of new links to China by the commercial port in one of Australia’s most strategically important harbours. ...

The Council on Foreign Relations has been tracking China’s growing maritime influence through investments in strategic overseas ports and has reported that while China has limited overseas naval bases, it has emerged as a leading commercial power with considerable economic influence over international sea lanes and commercial ports. China’s shipping routes and service networks span major countries and regions worldwide, backed by 70 bilateral and regional shipping agreements with 66 nations. ..."
