Underwater Solar Cells Capture Energy 10 Meters Deep with high efficiency

Amazing stuff!

"... A new study suggests photovoltaics can also work below the ocean’s surface, generating useful amounts of electricity underwater even at depths of 10 meters. ...

To overcome this challenge, ... colleagues designed solar cells that could make full use of shorter wavelength sunlight. They fabricated perovskite solar cells that cover the spectrum of light that does filter through 5 to 10 meters of water, which consists mostly of blue-green 400- to 600-nm wavelengths.

The scientists found that while their photovoltaic cells attained a light-to-electricity conversion efficiency of 17.08 percent under the conditions usually found on land, they achieved 34.71 percent efficiency when given the spectrum of light one would expect submerged 10 meters underwater. Most standard land-based solar panels achieve an average efficiency between 20 and 25 percent. ..."

From the highlights & abstract:
"Context & scale
Underwater solar energy harvesting remains an unresolved challenge due to the strong spectral attenuation of sunlight in water. Herein, to address this challenge, wide-bandgap (∼1.96 eV) lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are employed, whose absorption is spectrally matched to the underwater solar spectrum at a depth of 10 m.
To achieve highly efficient and durable submerged PSCs (S-PSCs), polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride (PHMG) is introduced for energy-level modulation, which enables the perovskites to convert from p- to n-type, facilitating electron extraction, suppressing halide ion migration, reducing defect density, and improving lattice stability.
Meanwhile, to rationally evaluate the device performance under the submerged spectra, an underwater solar simulator with customized optical filters is designed. Consequently, the S-PSC devices deliver a power conversion efficiency of 34.71% under the simulated spectrum at 10 m water depth, along with long-term stability.
Furthermore, large-area perovskite solar modules are fabricated, which exhibit outstanding performance in practical outdoor operation, successfully demonstrating power generation by charging lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and lighting up LEDs.
This work paves the way for the practical deployment of perovskite photovoltaics in underwater environments, offering a promising route toward self-sustained marine energy systems and autonomous underwater devices.

Highlights
• The ∼1.96-eV PSCs operate under real-world submerged conditions
• Highest PCEs of 17.08% (AM 1.5G) and 34.71% (simulated 10 m-deep light) were achieved
• Aging tests predict a T80 of ∼5.49 years under simulated 10 m underwater illumination

Summary
Underwater solar harvesting remains challenging due to the strong spectral attenuation of sunlight in water. Here, we demonstrate high-efficiency, durable submerged perovskite solar cells (S-PSCs) using wide-band-gap (∼1.96 eV) perovskites and engineered with polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride (PHMG) as a crystallization additive. The PHMG-modified S-PSCs achieve power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 16.79% (certified) under AM 1.5G and 34.71% under simulated 10 m-deep illumination, matching the optimal spectrum at this depth. The additive enhances crystallinity, optimizes energy-level alignment, and suppresses interfacial non-radiative recombination. Accelerated tests predict a T80 lifetime of 48,094 h (∼5.49 years) at 25°C under simulated submerged conditions at a depth of 10 m. The large-area modules demonstrated real-world functionality by generating 324 mWh of electricity upon underwater illumination for 2 h at 10 m depth, sufficient to charge lithium-ion batteries and power LEDs. This work introduces a robust materials-and-device strategy for underwater solar harvesting, enabling autonomous marine power systems and submerged Internet-of-Things infrastructure."

How large solar panel farms in China affect bird diversity, foraging and breeding behavior

Bad news! So much for so called (intermittent and unreliable) renewable energy!

Notice here again the AAAS use of awful climate change demagoguery! Or is the AAAS even admiring/promoting an authoritarian regime by the Communist Party of China?

Notice the study below also seems to confuse/conflate solar power farms and the replacement of diverse natural landscapes with dense homogeneous vegetation.

So solar panel farms do not only spoil nature!

We have known for a long time that wind turbine farms are mass killers of birds, bats, and insects! Plus, besides spoiling nature, they cause noise pollution!

"... In China, strong governmental policy has led to solar panels covering thousands of square kilometers.
Since birds are highly responsive to transformations in habitat and vegetation that can impact their breeding and migratory sites, assessing corresponding changes in bird diversity can serve as an indicator of wider ecological disturbance.

Researchers analyzed the overlap between pro-solar governmental policies and bird observations, as well as changes in land use, vegetation, and agricultural productivity, from 2014 to 2023 in 2344 Chinese counties. They found that stronger solar policies correlated with a reduction in bird biodiversity, especially in wealthy and nondesert regions. ..."

"... Just as climate policy requires credible estimates of climate damages [???] to inform the social cost of carbon, credible estimates of biodiversity values are needed when sustainable development policies alter ecosystems."

"Editor’s summary
The world needs to develop clean, renewable energy [???]. However, given the enormous human population and our energy needs, clean energy also will have a large footprint on nature.
Solar energy represents one of the cleanest forms [???] of renewables, but solar farms can greatly alter the environment.
Zhang et al. looked at the effects of solar power–promoting policies on bird diversity across over 2000 counties in China ... They found that counties with the most pro-photovoltaic policies had reductions in bird diversity, primarily due to land conversion. They argue that solar developments must be proactive about countering such losses, especially focusing siting efforts in regions such as deserts [???], where vegetation alteration can be minimized. ...

Abstract
Could the global transition to renewable energy create a green dilemma that pits carbon reduction against biodiversity conservation?
This study examined the effect of policies promoting solar photovoltaics on local avian biodiversity using a panel dataset covering 2344 counties in China from 2014 to 2023. Policies that favored photovoltaic expansion led to reductions in bird diversity, disproportionately affecting wealthier and nondesert regions, as well as widespread species.
The mechanism operated primarily through land conversion: Cropland and grassland were transformed into developed areas, reducing the diversity of vegetation.
Paradoxically, the leaf area index increased, a pattern we term “inferior greening,” whereby diverse natural landscapes were replaced by dense but ecologically homogeneous vegetation.
We argue that future photovoltaic development should be accompanied by strict biodiversity safeguards, especially in economically developed regions with high habitat complexity."

From the paper:
"The global imperative [???] to mitigate climate change has catalyzed an unprecedented expansion of renewable energy, with solar photovoltaics at the forefront. This transition, essential for decarbonization [???], can entail a profound transformation of land use, creating a potential conflict with biodiversity conservation. Nowhere is this dynamic more pronounced than in China, where the carbon neutrality strategy [???] is driving a massive expansion of solar capacity projected to constitute nearly 45% of its energy mix by 2060. ...

The large-scale deployment of solar arrays driven by these policies often results in severe habitat fragmentation and the loss of essential foraging and breeding grounds, threatening avian populations regardless of flock size. ..."

Many counties in China supporting solar energy development had reductions in bird diversity, potentially reflecting the ecological consequences of land conversion. [Does this not look really awful!]

An electrolyzer that can produce more than 99.9% pure hydrogen from water, while running directly on solar power, for under $2 per kilogram

Good news! However, Terraform Industries does not appear to have any convincing/professional Internet presence (their blog posts are outdated)! A little weird even for a startup or a pioneering, new company!

Reminder: Remember the Hindenburg Disaster of 1937! Hydrogen is explosive! Handle with great care!

The world’s installed solar capacity surpassed three terawatts (3 TW) in 2026

Good news, with qualifications!

How often do solar panels be cleaned to be effective?
How intermittent and unreliable is this source of energy?
How many batteries/storage are needed to make it more reliable?

Green or renewable energy are euphemisms!

"... less than two years after reaching two terawatts and four years after reaching one.
China still accounts for most of the growth in global solar capacity, but a rising share now comes from cheap Chinese panels installed in developing countries."

"After crossing the 100-gigawatt mark in 2012, it took the world 10 years to deploy 1 terawatt of solar power. An additional 1 terawatt, enough to meet all of US power demand at its peak, took less than three years to build. Not even two years later in 2026 — the precise timing is subject to debate among analysts — the 3-terawatt threshold was reached."

Debunking The Myth of cheap renewable energy

Food for thought! I also bet that so called renewable energy (an euphemism) is not cheap!

"Existing Coal Plants Are Cheap Compared to Wind and Solar, Research Shows
Although data doesn’t support the claim, climate scolds and renewable-energy profiteers often claim wind and solar are the cheapest sources of power now, and certainly cheaper than coal. This is false.

Energy Information Agency (EIA) data on trends in industrial, commercial, and residential power rates and reliability clearly show that states which have led the way in displacing baseload fossil fuel power plants and existing nuclear with wind and solar have seen the fastest-rising electric prices and the highest number of outages, compared to states that haven’t followed the siren song or green energy to disaster. ...

What EBB discovered is that, “[o]n average, existing coal plants operate at $45.57 per megawatt-hour (Mwh).” The discrepancy between the lowest-cost coal plants, operating at $22 to $27 Megawatts per hour, and the most expensive plants was their utilization rate. The more a plant is utilized, the lower the cost of the power it produces.

Using FERC data once again, the team at EBB found the average cost of an existing coal facility was far below the average cost of an existing industrial wind facility ($59.78 Mwh) and less than half the cost of electricity produced by an existing industrial solar facility ($102.40). ..."

Millions of homeowners to receive free electricity in 2026 thanks to Australia’s solar boom

One more reason why Australia is attractive for immigrants! 😊

"For years, Australians have been been installing solar panels at a rapid clip. Now that investment is paying off.

The Australian government announced this week that electricity customers in three states will get free electricity for up to three hours per day starting in July 2026.

Solar power has boomed in Australia in recent years. Rooftop solar installations cost about $840 (U.S.) per kilowatt of capacity before rebates, about a third of what U.S. households pay. As a result, more than one in three Australian homes have solar panels on their roof. ..."

How Wind And Solar Are Quietly Inflating Electricity Bills

Recommendable! Similar facts and reasons have been reported over and over for at least the past 20 years or so!

Our ancestors not very long ago abandoned wind power for a reason! Lessons of history unlearned!

How much money was wasted on wind and solar power instead of nuclear power and research into alternative energy supplies like nuclear fusion, hydrogen etc.!

"... Solar and wind’s part-time nature is the root issue. Solar generates nothing at night, little in the first and last hours of daylight, and falters under clouds, rain, or snow. Wind generation varies unpredictably. This intermittency doesn’t just displace fossil fuels like natural gas and coal—it forces them into inefficient backup roles. ..."

Chinese scientists developed a transparent coating that turns ordinary windows into invisible solar panels

Impressive, if confirmed! Call me skeptical! Why not equip walls of buildings with solar panels instead of windows?

"... a breakthrough that could let skyscrapers and homes generate power without blocking light."

"A research team led by Nanjing University has introduced a transparent, colorless, and unidirectional solar concentrator that can be directly coated onto standard window glass. Utilizing cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) multilayers with submicron lateral periodicities, this diffractive-type solar concentrator (CUSC) selectively guides sunlight toward the edge of the window where photovoltaic cells are installed.  ..."

From the abstract:
"Solar concentrators laterally converge solar energy to the side of architectural glass and are attractive candidates for building-integrated photovoltaics. Present available luminescent-type and scattering-type solar concentrators suffer from omnidirectional waveguide induced low efficiency, coloring/hazing restrained aesthetic quality, and poor compatibility with existing architectural glass.
Here, we propose a diffractive solar concentrator via directly coating cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) layers onto the architectural glass. The stacked CLC layers with submicron lateral periodic alignment enable broadband and unidirectional waveguiding inside the glass, and thus supply a high-efficient platform for transmissive solar energy capturing with merits of high aesthetic quality and economic viability.
A 1-inch-diameter prototype powers a 10-mW fan outdoors, and a typical 2-m-wide window is calculated to concentrate solar energy by 50 times. The design is expected to bring a global terawatt-scale green energy supply and billion-ton annual carbon emission reduction, meeting with the sustainable development of human society."
