Good news!

"... The factory will be repurposed for the production of components for the Iron Dome air defense system. Confirmation of the deal came this morning after long months of complicated negotiations.

The deal that has taken shape circumvents the opposition of the Qatar investment fund, which holds 10% of Volkswagen shares, to cooperate with Rafael in the production of defense systems. The deal will save thousands of jobs at the factory, which is scheduled to be closed next year by the car giant. ..."

Saudi Aramco backs India's Mitti Labs to make Asia's rice farming more water-resilient

Good news, but older news!

Let's not forget Methane is a trace gas! Associations between methane in the atmosphere and climate change/global warming are tenuous!

"As rising temperatures and shifting rainfall patterns put Asia’s water-intensive rice farming under pressure, Mitti Labs, a New York- and Bengaluru-headquartered climate-tech startup, has raised $9.5 million in an investment led by Aramco Ventures, Saudi Aramco’s venture arm, to expand across Asia with a platform that combines satellite imagery, AI, and field operations to help farmers cut water use and methane emissions. ...

Since launching its first programs in 2023, Mitti Labs has sought to tackle the heavy water use and methane emissions associated with rice farming through its platform that fuses satellite radar imagery with years of field data collected by its teams. The startup says the technology creates digital twins of individual rice fields, allowing it to monitor crop conditions, water use, and methane emissions across thousands of smallholder farms, where the average holding is about one hectare.

Mitti Labs’ GeoAI platform uses synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery from commercial and public satellites, with resolutions ranging from 50 centimeters to 10 meters, alongside years of field measurements collected by its teams. The startup’s edge lies less in the satellite imagery itself than in the proprietary datasets it has built to train its AI models, allowing it to monitor crop growth, soil moisture, and flooding across smallholder farms remotely, co-founder Xavier Laguarta said in an interview. ..."

"Rice feeds half the world every day, but growing it is putting an outsized strain on the planet's water supply. As the most water-intensive crop on Earth, rice consumes more than 30% of all irrigation water. Traditional paddies, kept continuously flooded to suppress weeds, also generate huge volumes of methane, a greenhouse gas now responsible for roughly a quarter of the warming the planet [???] has experienced to date. ...

We are proud to announce that we have raised a $9.5 million Series A to accelerate an answer to that problem. The round was led by Aramco Ventures, with participation from Lightspeed India, Godrej Industries Group, Cisco Foundation, Francis Family Fund, and Volta Circle. ..."

More than Just Trade: Taiwan’s Investment Boom in the United States

Good news! This is mind boggling!

"... an investment agreement signed in January between the United States and Taiwan. The deal promises $250 billion in Taiwanese private-sector investment and up to $250 billion in government-backed credit guarantees in the United States. ...

Taiwan was the United States fourth-largest trading partner in 2025, with bilateral trade totaling approximately USD 256 billion. Four years prior, Taiwan was America’s eleventh-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade barely exceeding USD 100 billion.
Now, Taiwan is the United States fourth-largest source of imports (USD 201 billion), and the tenth-largest export market (USD 55 billion). This large volume of trade has led the United States to become Taiwan’s second-largest trading partner for over a decade. ...

While discussion of Taiwanese investment understandably focuses on TSMC, there are also a growing number of companies across a wide range of industries trying to expand into the American market. ..."

Waymo raises $16B to scale robotaxi fleet internationally

Good news! Waymos everywhere! If you drive on the streets of the Phoenix metro area (Arizona), you see a Waymo car almost every other minute or so.

"Waymo, the Alphabet-owned autonomous vehicle company, has raised $16 billion as it plans to grow its fleet of driverless taxicabs this year to more than a dozen new cities internationally, including London and Tokyo.

Dragoneer Investment Group, DST Global, and Sequoia Capital led the funding round, which now values Waymo at $126 billion, the company said in a blog post Monday. ...

In 2016, it made its first geographic leap forward and began testing in Phoenix, where it eventually pulled its human safety driver out of the vehicles. Phoenix became Waymo’s first robotaxi market, in which the public could hail driverless Chrysler Pacifica minivans.

Waymo pushed down the accelerator in August 2023 after receiving the final necessary permit to operate a robotaxi service — and charge for rides — in California. It launched a limited service in San Francisco, later expanding to much of the greater Bay Area, Silicon Valley, and more recently to the freeways that connect the dozens of towns in the area. It also expanded to Los Angeles. The company launched in Austin and Atlanta in 2025 through a partnership with Uber. It kicked off the year by expanding to Miami. ..."

"... This milestone is built on a foundation of safety that is now statistically superior to human driving. Across 127 million miles of fully autonomous operation—the equivalent of going to the moon and back over 260 times—we have achieved a 90% reduction in serious injury crashes. ..."
