Abolish the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Food for thought!

"In an op-ed at The Washington Post, Senior Fellow Scott Atlas echoes Milton Friedman in arguing that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) “should be abolished.” While the NIH has funded some valuable scientific research, Atlas says, “it’s also a governmental monopoly with a roughly $48 billion budget subject to political influence, fiscal abuse and suppression of scientific dissent—one that has diverted billions from actual science to academic operations, racial set-asides and ideological mandates.” Atlas reviews various examples where politicians of both major parties have steered research funding and agendas toward various preferred areas. “Abolishing the NIH would not create a funding vacuum,” Atlas maintains, noting that the private sector already “funds 78 percent of US biomedical research and development.” What’s more, Atlas says, much of the private investment flowing into artificial intelligence is already “funding the overwhelming majority of innovative medical devices and building the AI revolution in biomedicine.” Atlas concludes that doing away with the NIH would not represent a cut to science but rather “is a case for science itself.”"

"In 1980, economist Milton Friedman said the National Institutes of Health should be abolished. Friedman said the same about another government research agency, the National Science Foundation. And when he was asked what the NSF should be replaced with, he replied: “Nothing.” ..."

Top Fauci aide at NIAID indicted on charges of concealing, falsifying records with respect to Covid-19

I am afraid Anthony Fauci will get away with his own criminal acts given his high age (about 85 years old)!

What about the lab leak hypothesis?

"David Morens, a former top National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases official, was indicted Tuesday on allegations that he concealed records from Freedom of Information Act requests.

Trump administration officials said in a legal filing that Morens hid and falsified records to undermine debate about the origins of the virus that spurred the Covid-19 pandemic — and received kickbacks for doing so, including wine and offers of future meals at high-end restaurants. Morens was a senior adviser to former NIAID Director Anthony Fauci, who is not named directly in the indictment. ..."

New NIH Jay Bhattacharya chief says all gain-of-function research stopped

Good news! Hopefully, this is only a temporary stop! Why all gain of function research, domestic or foreign?

How much is actually gain of function research still needed or what are the alternatives?

Fauci Fallout: New NIH chief says all gain-of-function research stopped, no lockdowns in future | Just The News "Gain of function research is a controversial form of science that tries to enhance deadly viruses and bacteria to make them more deadly in an effort to study future pandemic responses."

NIH launches new Standardized Organoid Modeling (SOM) Center in planned move away from animal testing in medical research

Good news! Long overdue!

Where are the animal rights activists when you need them! Animal testing for research is a disturbing blind spot by these activists.

"... The centre, which will be funded with $87 million (£65 million) in contracts spread out over three years and housed at the NIH’s Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research in Maryland, aims to address reproducibility challenges through the use of advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and various human cell lines. The hope is that the standardised organoid models created will be widely used by researchers and accepted by regulators, accelerating scientific discoveries and decisions. ..."

National Institutes of Health are working on reducing animal testing

Good news! Will President Trump push for less animal testing? We hope so! All the President's women!

"Nicole Kleinstreuer, a computational toxicologist at the National Institutes of Health, over the past few months. Kleinstreuer was thrust into the spotlight earlier this year when she was named acting deputy director and chosen to help lead a new office working to reduce the use of animals in NIH-funded research. ..."

"... In these roles, she led interagency and international efforts to promote new approach methodologies (NAMs), reduce animal testing, and integrate computational modeling, artificial intelligence, and systems toxicology into regulatory science. ..."

US National Institutes of Health (NIH)-Funded Science Must Now Be Free to Read Instantly, no more time limited paywalls

Good news! Bravo! This might seem a minor step, but it allows also the general public to access latest medical research when needed.

"“From 1 July, researchers funded by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) will be required to make their scientific papers available to read for free as soon as they are published in a peer-reviewed journal. That’s according to the agency’s latest public-access policy, aimed at making federally funded research accessible to taxpayers.” ..."

Bethesda Declaration — We dissent, STAND UP FOR SCIENCE. With 75% anonymous signers! Really!

When 6000 and counting obviously politicized scientists spread propaganda and demagoguery!

Of course, they don't like when ideological pet projects like DEI, LGBTQ or poor countries are cut.

Supposedly, 21 Nobel Prize winners signed too. Well, Einstein was a naive, stupid socialist! Maybe these individuals are accomplished in their fields, but politics and rational thinking in other areas???

"We dissent’: NIH staff protest Trump policies
For weeks, Science reporters have been talking to scientists at NIH about all the terrible things happening there. Yesterday many of those we’re in touch with opened up publicly with a declaration, even though it put their jobs at risk . Nearly 350 current and laid-off scientists and staff released a statement charging NIH officials and their superiors with politicizing science. The signers, about 75% anonymous ...

The Bethesda Declaration, named for NIH’s main campus in Maryland, also aims to test Bhattacharya’s avowed support for scientific dissent, organizers say. “We dissent to Administration policies that undermine the NIH mission, waste public resources, and harm the health of Americans and people across the globe [???],” the declaration states.

More than 5000 people, including at least 21 Nobel prize winners, have signed an open letter stating that they “stand with these committed professionals in support of reversing the harmful actions of this administration. ..."

A Deep Cut to NIH-Funded Research by President Trump. Really!

Or is it rather urgent and overdue cutting of government waste, fraud, and abuse by the research community?

How about the usual alarmism and hysteria!

How much of those "indirect costs" are really necessary for scientific research and how much are slush funds for all sorts of things. More efficiency please!

"America’s research institutions are reeling after the Trump administration announced drastic cuts to research grants last Friday—a move universities and medical centers say could imperil the nation’s future in scientific research, reports NPR Shots.

What's targeted: The NIH cuts are aimed at “indirect costs” in research grants—funding that universities and research centers depend on to cover essential operations like lab equipment, utilities, and staffing ...
The NIH announced the rate will be slashed to 15%—a heavy reduction from the 30%+ many institutions previously received. In 2023, NIH spent nearly $9 billion on indirect costs. The new policy aims to cut $4 billion.

The new rate, which goes into effect today, will apply to all new and existing grants, reports Science. ..."

"... Pursuant to this Supplemental Guidance, there will be a standard indirect rate of 15% across all NIH grants for indirect costs in lieu of a separately negotiated rate for indirect costs in every grant. ..."

U.S. National Institutes of Health took royalties from Wuhan lab collaborator, alleged front for Russian bioweapons

Incredible! Is the truth finally coming out why the lab leak hypothesis was so intensively suppressed by the U.S. government, Anthony Fauci, and Francis Collins?

Unfortunately, this does not look very good on former President Trump either! Either he failed to recognize the issues related to the Wuhan Institute of Virology or he choose to gloss over it.

As I have blogged here multiple times since 2020, the fact that the U.S. government financed and supported dangerous virus research at this lab, which was likely prohibited in the U.S. is a very disturbing event! Further, it was reported multiple times that this lab was dual use (civilian and military research).

"The National Institutes of Health and its scientists received royalties from Chinese Communist Party-controlled pharmaceutical companies, including one that collaborated with a suspected source of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a Russian vaccine maker that reportedly may have served as a front for Soviet bioweapons research, according to newly disclosed records. ...
NIH fought to shield the identities of the entities that paid to license its taxpayer-funded inventions from the agency and individual scientists, including then-Director Francis Collins and then-National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci, who together received 58 payments from seven companies. ..."

US National Institutes of Health reinstates grant to EcoHealth Alliance for more controversial coronavirus research in China

Why is any of this research conducted in a totalitarian dictatorship and at a research institute that is also possibly involved in the development of biological weapons?

The lab leak hypothesis is still the best explanation!

There is also a strong suspicion that this research was done in circumvention of stricter U.S. regulations!!!

This is insane and irresponsible!

"The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) has reinstated a grant to a highly scrutinized research organization that studies bat coronaviruses — but the agency has placed several stipulations on the scope of the research and on the organization’s accounting practices.

The move caps a years-long saga that has thrust the EcoHealth Alliance, a small non-profit organization in New York City, into the political fray for its collaborations with the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) in China. In April 2020, after then-US-president Donald Trump hinted that SARS-CoV-2 originated in a WIV laboratory, the NIH terminated EcoHealth’s grant. ...
Researchers who spoke to Nature applaud the renewal [???], adding that this type of research is essential to avert the next pandemic. ..."

National Institutes of Health (NIH): Annual Report to the Nation: Cancer deaths continue downward trend

Good news!

"Overall cancer death rates continued to decline among men, women, children, and adolescents and young adults in every major racial and ethnic group in the United States from 2015 to 2019, according to the latest Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer. From 2014 to 2018, overall cancer incidence, or new cases of cancer, remained stable for men and children but increased for women and adolescents and young adults. This year’s report, published October 27, 2022, in Cancer, also highlights longer-term trends in pancreatic cancer ..."

Annual US drug survey finds use of psychedelics at a record high

Not good news! Drug use disorders remain a serious issue! There are no easy solutions! A difficult subject!

E.g. how much drug use is fairly harmless and temporary or exploring/experimenting and how much is more long lasting, harmful, excessive and of concern etc.?

"New data from an annual drug-use survey supported by the US National Institutes of Health has found recreational use of psychedelics among older adults in the US is at the highest point ever-recorded in the survey’s nearly 40-year history. The data also indicates while alcohol and tobacco consumption is still trending down, marijuana-use has increased. ...
The Monitoring The Future (MTF) study began in 1975, initially surveying drug-use habits in a single class of senior high school students. Over the next few years the survey expanded to include younger school students, while annually following up with all prior participants. ...
On the other hand, marijuana use has unsurprisingly dramatically increased over the past decade, with 42.6% of young adults reporting using the drug at some point over the past 12 months, up from 28.6% in 2012. ..."

From the government news release:
"Marijuana and hallucinogen use in the past year reported by young adults 19 to 30 years old increased significantly in 2021 compared to five and 10 years ago, reaching historic highs in this age group since 1988, according to the Monitoring the Future (MTF) panel study. Rates of past-month nicotine vaping, which have been gradually increasing in young adults for the past four years, also continued their general upward trend in 2021, despite leveling off in 2020. Past-month marijuana vaping, which had significantly decreased in 2020, rebounded to pre-pandemic levels in 2021.
Alcohol remains the most used substance among adults in the study, though past-year, past-month, and daily drinking have been decreasing over the past decade. Binge drinking (five or more drinks in a row in the past two weeks) rebounded in 2021 from a historic low in 2020, during the early stages of COVID-19 pandemic. On the other hand, high-intensity drinking (having 10 or more drinks in a row in the past two weeks) has been steadily increasing over the past decade and in 2021 reached its highest level ever recorded since first measured in 2005. ..."

Anthony Fauci’s wife, Christine Grady, who is the chief bioethicist at National Institutes of Health

So the wife of the highest paid and most controversial federal employee works at the same agency as her husband and as a head of a department. Plus, Fauci (81 years old) is Director of the NIH since 1984.

Any appearance of nepotism?

Did you know that?

P.S. Anthony Fauci was appointed by the demented and senile 46th President to be his Chief Medical Advisor to the President. Oh wonderful. At least President Trump did not make this mistake!

National Institutes of Health gave $46 Million research funds to Chinese Entities since 2011

Incredible! Why any U.S. taxpayer dollars are disbursed by the federal government on research in a communist dictatorship is beyond comprehension!

In particular, if the NIH financed research in China that is not allowed or difficult to conduct in the U.S., then this would be very dubious!

Why President Trump did not fire or retire this 80 year old clown Anthony Fauci and highest paid federal employee is a riddle and a major mistake!

"The National Institutes of Health has doled out nearly $46 million in taxpayer funds to 100 Chinese institutions in the form of subgrants since 2011 to conduct research into infectious diseases, drug addiction, mental health, and other scientific fields, according to a Daily Caller News Foundation analysis of federal spending data. ...
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the National Institutes of Health subagency led by Dr. Anthony Fauci, provided $6.6 million in taxpayer-funded subgrants to 27 Chinese entities, including the Wuhan Institute of Virology, to conduct research into allergies and infectious diseases ...
Another National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases-funded project provided $600,000 in subgrants to the Wuhan Institute of Virology prior to the COVID-19 pandemic to conduct research that involved the genetic modification of bat-based coronaviruses. ...
Fauci has defended his agency’s funding of the Wuhan lab amid growing concern that it could be linked to the COVID-19 outbreak, saying it would have been “negligent” for his agency not to do so. ..."
