The Fog, a New Encrypted Cloud Platform, Rolls In into the cloud
Good news! The cloud is getting foggy! 😊
"Niobium Microsystems is a technology company based in Dayton, Ohio, specializing in Zero Trust Computing through dedicated hardware accelerators for Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE)." (Google AI)
"... Launched in early April by chip startup Niobium, the Fog is an encrypted cloud platform. It follows a client-server architecture, where a person or organization (the client) can encrypt data or workloads locally using their own private keys and deploy the encrypted data or workloads to the Fog (the server) without sharing their keys. These private keys remain with data owners, and only they can decrypt any results from the platform.
Much as actual fog obscures everything it envelops, so does the encrypted cloud platform named after it. ...
“The data in our cloud will never be exposed—it’s always encrypted,” says John Barrus, vice president of product at Niobium. “It’s a new category of cloud.” ..."

Apple is being sued for abandoning its plans to implement a system that would detect child sexual abuse material in iCloud libraries
Bad news!
Any private company offering cloud storage ought to make sure there is no child pornography stored on their devices!
"Apple is being sued for abandoning its plans to implement a system that would detect child sexual abuse material in iCloud libraries. The company had shelved those plans after privacy and security advocates said it would open a backdoor to government surveillance.[???]"

Google files EU antitrust complaint against Microsoft over unfair cloud computing practices. Really!
Big tech rivalry using government antitrust tools instead of market competition! Let this sink in! 😊
"Google throws a tantrum: The Alphabet-owned tech giant has filed an antitrust complaint in Brussels against Microsoft, saying the company engages in unfair cloud computing practices, reports The Financial Times. Oh, how the turns have tabled."

CoreWeave came 'out of nowhere' poised to make billions off AI with its GPU cloud
Sounds promising! Texas competes with California! Competition is good! The creative destruction by daring entrepreneurs continues! Bravo!
"A few months ago, few had heard of CoreWeave, a cloud startup specializing in GPU-accelerated workloads, according to Brannin McBee, the company’s co-founder and chief strategy officer. Now, CoreWeave is poised to make billions off of the generative AI boom with its GPU cloud.
“We’ve come out of nowhere,” he told VentureBeat in an interview last week. With over $400 million in new funding; a new $1.6 billion data center in Plano, Texas; and the world’s fastest AI supercomputer built in partnership with Nvidia unveiled last month, the company’s fortunes have shifted dramatically — thanks, in no small part, to Nvidia. ...
CoreWeave was founded in 2017 by three commodities traders who turned their cryptocurrency mining hobby into an Ethereum mining company, using GPUs to verify blockchain transactions — doing business out of a New Jersey data center. By 2019, the founders had pivoted — fortuitously, in hindsight — to building a specialized cloud infrastructure spanning seven facilities that offered GPU acceleration at scale. ..."

Zebware's ZebClient delivers cloud data access at memory speed
Good news! It sounds almost too good to be true, but I strongly believe high speed transfer of data to and from the cloud is being developed!
"Yesterday, Swedish software provider Zebware released test results verifying that its cloud data memory bridge, ZebClient, demonstrated cloud data access speeds that were 500 times faster during tests performed at Intel’s 5G Innovation Center in Stockholm, Sweden. Based on Zebware’s proprietary erasure code, ZebClient optimizes performance by eliminating the need for local object or file storage and efficiently serves hot data from memory so that it doesn’t need to be retrieved from the cloud when in use. ...
In practice, ZebClient replicates the performance of on-site hardware by disaggregating storage from compute while optimizing the utilization of Intel Optane persistent memory and Octane SSDs to increase read and write speed. ..."

Artificial intelligence ramps up speech therapy success for children and adults
Good news! Good business!
"... Approximately 1.5 billion people globally deal with voice, speech or language impairments. For therapy to be effective, it must be supported by consistent at-home practice, and that is one of the myriad ways AI can help. ...
Speech language pathologists (SLPs) use games and props to engage children in their sessions. TikTalk’s cloud-based virtual assistant brings that aspect home, motivating kindergartners to sixth graders to practice the articulation skills they’re learning in speech therapy consistently and accurately. ...
“We started from stuttering and expanded to various speech-language disorders and then to dyslexia and then to entire special populations – a $100 billion annual market in the US. In Israel, that includes occupational and physical therapy and psychological counseling,” ...

Oracle to open Israel data center this summer
Good news! The race by U.S. tech giants to open data centers in Israel is on! Just recently Microsoft announced its plans (see my post here)!
How Oracle divides its international business into regions is an oracle!
"... On a LinkedIn post Oracle SVP UK, Israel and Benelux Richard Petley said that the company plans to continue working strenuously to set up the data center that it began building this year. ..."

Microsoft Israel to launch regional data center in 2022
Good news! This will certainly be a boost to the dynamic economy and technology of Israel!
"... The official description of the public cloud to be launched by Microsoft in Israel in early 2022 is a Hyperscale Cloud Data Center Region. According to Microsoft, its cloud infrastructure serves more than one billion customers and some 20 million businesses around the world.
Under the plan, Microsoft will initially launch Microsoft Azure in Israel, facilitating cloud developments and providing infrastructure for computing, network, databases, analysis, artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT). In the following months, all the company's international cloud solutions will become available in Israel. ..."

Microsoft outage knocks sites and services offline
Just a reminder how dependent we have become on all kinds of online services! However, given how complicated and diverse this huge cloud ecosystem is, it is a strong confirmation that it works actually remarkably well most of the time thanks to human ingenuity and capable engineers! Bravo!
"... Besides its homepage, Microsoft’s Xbox and Office services went down, log-in pages didn’t load, and the company’s status pages were also knocked offline by the outage. Worse, Microsoft’s cloud service Azure also fell offline, causing outages to any sites and services that rely on it.
Microsoft confirmed it was a networking issue. Microsoft also tweeted that it was related to DNS ..."

Google, Aramco partner for Saudi Arabia's $10 billion cloud market
This is old news by now! However, it is a huge engagement! Apparently, the young crown prince of Saudi king, Mohammed bin Salman (born 1985), is making his influence felt to bring Saudi Arabia rapidly into the 21st century! Add to that the United Arab Emirates recently launched a successful space exploration mission to Mars.
"... Aramco said Saudi Arabia is being added to the global network of Google Cloud Platform regions, as part of a strategic alliance agreement signed between the company and Google Cloud this month.
Google Cloud will establish and operate a new cloud region in Saudi Arabia, while a new company will be formed after required regulatory clearances to supply cloud solutions and services to customers, Aramco said. ..."
"... Amazon Web Services launched its first cloud region in the Middle East in Bahrain last year, servicing top tier local clients such as Emirati bank Emirates NBD and rideshare service Careem. Microsoft launched its offering in the United Arab Emirates around the same time, making Google a later entrant to the regional scene. ..."

Welche Kleingeister!

How Robot Care System uses the cloud to enhance its LEA smart walker
Recommendable! Robots with cloud computing! Don't you wish to reach old age? (just kidding)
"Adopting cloud computing will allow developers to manage data from all LEA robots for machine-learning model training. This information processing will help increase the scale and speed at which their robots can learn from each other and function better for customers.
In addition, RoboMaker allows Robot Care Systems to create managed robotics simulations, in which developers can test and evaluate how their robots will behave in certain situations. Also, maintaining robots becomes easier in the cloud. The current state of maintenance operations requires on-site visits by human technicians, but with updated cloud-supported fleet management, the group can receive diagnostic alerts and push out bug fixes and software updates remotely ... Amazon Lex and Polly will be used to test and deploy a natural language processing (NLP) voice interface for LEA, giving the device a new way to interact with users. Meanwhile, SageMaker, a machine learning program, will help Lea better identify risk factors for users by improving movement and behavior detection."
How Robot Care System uses the cloud to enhance its LEA smart walker: The LEA smart walker is designed to help people with Parkinson's and other conditions, and it includes intelligence built using the cloud and AWS RoboMaker.
