New $11bn Pinglu canal underscores China's turn toward Southeast Asia
Good news!
"Next week, Chinese officials plan to inaugurate a new shipping channel intended to invigorate trade along the country's south coast and spur development in inland provinces.
In recent years, Southeast Asia has overtaken Europe and North America as China's top trading partner, and the new Pinglu Canal could help accelerate this even further. Built in just four years, the canal's rapid construction contrasts with lackluster progress on overseas canal projects involving Chinese interests. ..."
"The Pinglu Canal ... is a 134.2-kilometer inland river I-class waterway under construction between Xijin reservoir on the Yu river in Hengzhou and the lower part of the Qin River, allowing access to the Gulf of Tonkin.
The canal will shorten the route between inland Guangxi and the sea by up to 560 km (350 mi).[1] It is China's first river-to-sea canal since the founding of the People's Republic. ..." (Wikipedia)

Tel Aviv Stock Exchange again considerably outperforms S&P, NASDAQ, and STOXX Europe 600 in the year 5786
Happy New Year (Rosh Hashanah) Israel!
Unfortunately, I (Google) could not find a chart with historical monthly data from 2000 to 2026! This is bad!
"... In the Jewish year 5786, which in the TASE’s analysis is the period September 25, 2025 to September 4, 2026, the Tel Aviv 35 Index rose by 40.5% ...
In New York, the S&P 500 Index and the Dow Jones Index rose by 16% over the same period, while the Nasdaq rose by 18%.

A Business Baby Boom in the US in 2026, but it started under the 46th President
Good news!
"Americans filed 578,926 new business applications in July, an increase of 8.1 percent from June and 23.4 percent from a year earlier.
That was the highest monthly total in the Census Bureau’s seasonally adjusted series, which stretches back to July 2004. It exceeded even the extraordinary July 2020 pandemic surge by 5.9 percent.
This is broader than a spectacular month. Applications in
creased in April, May, June, and July. The three-month average reached a record 547,848, up 9.8 percent from the preceding three months"

The Trump Manufacturing Boom Gets Even Stronger
Good news! Sounds like a strong economic expansion thanks to the pro business Trump administration.
"Orders are rising, factories are turning out more capital equipment, job openings are soaring, and purchasing managers say the expansion continued in August. Four reports released over the past few weeks approach the factory sector from different directions. All of them found accelerating strength in durable goods, the core of U.S. manufacturing. ..."

Something Is Wrong With Indonesian Economy | Dark Side of Indonesia’s Economic Boom
Recommendable!
So Western countries decided not to buy nickel anymore when it comes from coal powered smelters like in Indonesia?
On top of that these smelters are owned by Chinese companies.
How Sweden built one of Europe’s hottest startup ecosystems
Recommendable!
"Sweden is perhaps one of the world’s hottest tech hubs right now. It has long been home to Spotify and Klarna, but this latest wave of companies — from legal AI startup Legora to vibe-coding tool company Lovable — has left everyone wondering what’s going on in one of the world’s happiest countries. ...
This year, the startup ecosystem has raised $2.8 billion in funding, according to Dealroom, and is projected to hit at least $5 billion.
Last year, the ecosystem raised $3.2 billion.
Nothing has quite matched the $8.5 billion raised in 2021 — a reflection of the hot venture market that later cooled and is now, per the data, starting to heat back up again. Other big emerging names from the ecosystem include Neko Health and autonomous freight company Einride. ...
the latest wave of startups in Stockholm is benefiting from the first generation of entrepreneurs, who are providing resources and mentorship to the latest generation — or, in some cases, becoming repeat founders themselves (Spotify founder Daniel Ek, for instance, is also the founder of Neko Health). ..."
What is not Lovable about Sophia Bendz (Source), a general partner at Cherry Ventures based in Stockholm. Just kidding!

Israel’s GDP growth reflects fast-rising Nvidia revenue
Amazing stuff! Like Nvidia Manna from heaven! 😊
"When Nvidia acquired Mellanox six years ago, few officials at the Ministry of Finance and Bank of Israel would have imagined that within a short time, the US chipmaker would become not only a global phenomenon and the most valuable company in the world, but also a major engine behind the growth of the Israeli economy - all without actually producing a single chip in Israel itself.
With 6,000 employees in Israel, Nvidia's footprint in the economy has become so large that the Central Bureau of Statistics has produced a new figure for growth without Nvidia’s activity. ...
Over the entire previous year, Israeli GDP grew by 3.5%, but without Nvidia, growth would have amounted to only 2.1%. ..."

Business investment in Canada barely enough to offset depreciation since 2018
Bad news!
"...
- Canada’s stagnant productivity performance over the past decade is tied to weak investment in non-residential assets such as factories, plants, machinery, equipment, and intellectual property.
- While there is some understanding of the country’s weak national performance in attracting investment, the performance of individual provinces is less well known and is important for an understanding of the current tensions within the country.
- Between 2018 and 2025, three provinces experienced an average annual decline in the overall value of their non-residential assets, meaning that the current levels of investment were insufficient to offset the depreciation (i.e., wear and tear) of existing assets.
- Alberta (-1.05%), Newfoundland & Labrador (-0.67 percent), and Saskatchewan (-0.44 percent) all recorded average annual real (i.e., inflation-adjusted) declines in the value of the stock of non-residential assets like plants, machinery, equipment, and intellectual property. Put simply, the stock of these assets was worth less in 2025 than it was in 2018 (inflation-adjusted).
- Over the same period, the nation as a whole recorded markedly weak growth in the stock of non-residential assets (0.99 percent), on an average annual basis.

Jobless Claims in the US Remain Below 200,000 For Third Straight Week—First Time in 57 Years
Good economic news! Below 200,000! Wow! This is probably as close as it gets to full employment in the US by this measure.
Maybe AI is not a job killer as of yet.
"Jobless claims have been below 200,000 for three consecutive weeks, the first such streak in 57 years. The last time jobless claims remained this low for this long was in 1969, during the extraordinary stretch of low unemployment from 1967 through 1969. The current numbers are all the more extraordinary because the workforce is more than twice as large and the last period’s labor numbers benefited from a military draft to support the Vietnam War.
The four-week moving average of claims fell to 198,750. Because claims can be volatile, many economists think this number is a better guide to the health of the labor market. The four-week average was last this low for two weeks in 2022. Prior to that, it had not been that low since 1969, when it hit an all-time low of 179,000. ..."

Uzbeks in training in Uzbekistan to boost Japan's logistics industry as truck drivers
Recommendable! An aging and shrinking population in Japan.
Why is Japan not developing robo trucks? Instead of teaching Uzbeks to speak Japanese and to drive trucks?
