Researchers capture first signs of ovarian cancer risk in a very young female patient

Good news! Cancer is history (soon)! God have mercy on this 23-year old woman!

This news release by Mayo Clinic sucks in so far as it does not contain the words woman/women at all although a ovarian cancer is sex specific and no transgender female was ever reported to have suffered from it as I believe! Only beginning in the fourth paragraph does the female journalist mention the pronoun "she" for the first time. This is really appalling!

"... But in the fallopian tube cells collected from the patient with HBOC syndrome and Li-Fraumeni syndrome, the scientists saw something they had never seen before. Instead of the two types of epithelial cells, the secretory cells vastly outnumbered the multiciliated cells across the fallopian tube. They also found that secretory cells were driving chronic inflammation — an established contributor to cancer development. ..."

From the results (the research articles does not appear to contain an abstract):
"Results
A 23-year-old woman presented to Mayo Clinic with a palpable right breast mass and intermittent unilateral nipple discharge.
Biopsy confirmed grade 2 invasive ductal carcinoma.
Magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography-computed tomography revealed clinical stage IB disease along with a left renal mass and ovarian cyst (Fig 1A).
Genetic testing identified germline mutations: a likely pathogenic variant in TP53 (c.96+1G>C) affecting a splice donor site, suspected to disrupt RNA splicing and impair protein function, and a pathogenic BRCA2 variant (c.6275_6276del) causing a premature stop codon and loss of protein function (Fig 1B).
The patient underwent bilateral nipple-sparing mastectomy because of her elevated risk of radiation-associated malignancies (Fig 1C).
Renal biopsy revealed grade 3 papillary renal cell carcinoma (RCC), and she then underwent robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy.
Pathology confirmed TFE3-rearranged RCC with negative surgical margins and lymph nodes (Fig 1D).
After counseling for increased risk of therapy-related myeloid neoplasms, the patient decided to proceed with chemotherapy for breast cancer and completed 12 weeks of paclitaxel/carboplatin neoadjuvant therapy."

Mayo Clinic: Developing Anti-Racism Leadership Competencies to Achieve Inclusive Practices and Health Equity 2023. Really!

The two brothers, who founded this famous world class clinic some 150 years ago, are spinning wildly in their graves!

Most likely awful indoctrination!

"This course introduces healthcare and biomedical leaders to anti-racist strategies, resources, and tools to achieve racial equity at both levels of organizational change and individual leadership practices. Participants engage in interactive exercises to evaluate their own biases and examine how they fit into the larger cultural experience in the United States. Through engaging multiple partners, participating in a series of small and large group discussions and activities, and watching and reflecting on videos, participants are empowered to explore the layers of assumptions, stereotypes, and biases, and systemic and institutionalized ideologies that lead to biased attitudes and discriminatory behavior. Participants partake in institutional and organizational problem-solving scenarios to build antiracism and racial equity competencies. This course is an essential starting point for anyone seeking to expand their knowledge on the complexities of race, gender, and class.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Develop foundational knowledge of the historical and societal foundations of structural racism and anti-Blackness in America.
  • Identify modern-day impacts of the historical, cultural, legal, and social foundations of structural racism and anti-Blackness in America.
  • Describe tools and resources to operationalize knowledge through analysis of present day health, wellness, and economic outcomes.
  • Examine the impact subjective bias has on all systems, decisions, and outcomes.
  • Review the roles each of us play in upholding or disrupting systems of inequity and exclusion."

The famous Mayo Clinic has become a purveyor of consumer advertisement!

Wow, was I annoyed and irritated when I tried to look up some information on medical symptoms from well known and respected sources of medical information on the Internet on the first day of 2022. That is when I discovered that the world famous non profit Mayo Clinic now mixes its health information with consumer advertisements. I believe this is new as I have previously looked up information on a number of occasions on the same Mayo Clinic website.

I am not sure I appreciate this crass commercialization! I bet, the charges for medical services will not be lowered by displaying this advertisement!

It certainly subtracts from the credibility, integrity, and trustworthiness of the information provided!

It looks very cheap and cheesy!

P.S. Of course, I did not look up the common cold! I only used the common cold as an example.

Mayo Clinic launches two companies to tap patient data for AI tools

Good news! The famous clinic is getting into AI and datasets! Will other clinics follow?

"Mayo Clinic is forming a pair of companies to collect and analyze data from remote monitoring devices and diagnostic tools, a move that comes as part of a broader bid to harness patient data to deliver continuous care guided by artificial intelligence.

The ultimate goal of the companies is to deliver more precise physiological information to patients and doctors around the clock, allowing them to make faster decisions to head off disease and deliver care without the usual morass of extra office visits and trips to the pharmacy. ..."

Mayo Clinic Research News – Zombie Cell Edition

Recommendable! Brief overview about some of the latest research on senescent cells!

"... that signals from dysfunctional mitochondria to the nucleus result in bits of chromatin — a complex of proteins, DNA and RNA in the nucleus — fragmenting into pieces and pushing into the cell’s cytoplasm. ... that detection by the cell of random the chromatin fragment triggers the inflammatory  senescence-associated secretory phenotype. ...
... that obesity increases senescence and diminishes the function of fat-tissue derived mesenchymal stem cells in comparison to the same type of cells from non-obese controls. ...
... senescent cells contribute to chemotherapy-induced bone loss. ..."
