Israel and Finland extend defense cooperation pact for 10 years

Good news!

Finland is the one country Stalin and the former Soviet Union could not conquer!

"Finland and Israel have secretly signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for defense cooperation until 2034, the Finnish media reports. The agreement was signed despite criticism from Finnish opposition parties. The agreement includes cooperation between the countries in R&D and procurement of defense equipment.

According to the Finnish Broadcasting Corporation Yle, the original MOU was signed in 2013, and it was the Finnish government that proposed to extend it in early 2024 - with the latest pact being until 2034. Previously, the agreement was extended for five years at a time, while now it has been extended for a decade.

The largest deal between the countries was signed in November 2023, when Finland procured Rafael's David's Sling air defense system for €317 million. David's Sling intercepts medium- to long-range rockets and missiles, as well as cruise missiles, using the Hit to Kill mechanism (direct impact of the interceptor on the target). David's Sling was jointly developed by the Defense Ministry's Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA), led by the main developer, Rafael. ..."

US Army opens ranges in Morocco to speed interceptor testing, development

Good news? Is this why President Trump has recently recognized West Sahara in Morocco's favor and Morocco named a long highway after him?

"... The international range is the Multidomain Training Area hosted in Morocco, Driscoll added. He said a private start-up company, called Covenant Industries, successfully tested their Anthem missile there on Thursday. ...

The multidomain training center in Morocco is one of the “primary elements” of a new Africa Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center, created through a memorandum of understanding signed between US Africa Command and the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces last month. ..."

Italy's controversial Gulf military mission enters public spotlight

Good news! Bravo Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni!

While the other European powers remain cowards and refuse to aid the US!

"Italy has about 700 military personnel deployed to the Gulf region to help partner nations counter Iranian attacks, a fact that recently entered the public spotlight in the country, drawing criticism from opposition parties in parliament.

Last week, the Italian Ministry of Defense disclosed publicly on its website the presence of two Italian task forces deployed across various Gulf countries to contribute to the surveillance and defense of the area. ...

According to the ministry’s website, approximately 400 Italian Air Force personnel have been in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait since March, following targeted attacks on those countries from Tehran. ...

Under Task Force Air-Arabia, notable military capabilities have also been provided: four Eurofighters tasked with supporting the defense of the assigned airspace, E-550A CAEW aircraft for early warning of air threats, and a KC-130J transport aircraft for operational support in “key theaters of national interest in the Middle East and the Horn of Africa.”

Rome has also deployed Task Group Kuwait as part of the mission, which it said on its website “ensures air surveillance capabilities through an AN-TPS-77 air defense radar” as well as Task Group C-UAS, equipped with the Leonardo-made ACUS-E anti-drone system designed to counter small drones.

Alongside the Air Force contingent, a 260-strong Italian Army component, called Task Force Land-Arabia, has been deployed to the region ... This brings the overall Italian deployment to the Gulf region to roughly 700 personnel.  ..."

Italy's controversial Gulf military mission enters public spotlight - Breaking Defense "“This is certainly one of Italy’s most significant deployments to the Gulf in many years — its importance lies not only in the number of personnel, but, above all, in the quality and scarcity of capabilities sent,” one Italian analyst said."

Israel sent IDF soldiers, Iron Dome system to Abu Dhabi during Iran war confirmed by Israeli government

Good news! Bravo! The Abraham Accords keep on giving!

"... While The Jerusalem Post and other media outlets reported the event on April 26, the report had to be attributed to “foreign sources” at the time.

However, with Transportation Minister Miri Regev confirming it publicly on Sunday, such attribution is no longer necessary. ...

Dozens of Iranian missiles fired towards the Gulf state were intercepted by the system.

This was the first instance of the Iron Dome being utilized operationally outside of the United States or Israel, though Singapore has previously reportedly purchased and received the Iron Dome, and Romania is expected to do so as well. ...

Iran fired several hundred more ballistic and cruise missiles at the UAE during the war than it did at Israel and also launched thousands of drones at it. ..."

Four German speaking European countries tout pan-German space command amid European push to supplant US tech

Good news! Europe ought to form their own defense organisation like NATO!

"Germany’s defense minister used a rare four-nation gathering of German-speaking defense chiefs this week to push forward plans for a European military space command, calling on close partners including Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg, to help shape the initiative rather than simply join it.

Boris Pistorius, Germany’s defense minister, announced at a press conference in Berlin that Germany is developing a European Space Component Command alongside a Weltraumakademie − a multilateral space training academy − and insisted that partner nations will be “embedded in the design phase” rather than presented with finished structures.

The meeting, billed as the first “DACH+L” format, expanding the traditional German-Austrian-Swiss defense dialogue to include Luxembourg, served as a platform for Pistorius to demonstrate traction on Germany’s €35 billion ($40.7 billion) military space investment pledged last fall. That program spans encrypted low-earth-orbit satellite constellations, military-grade launch capacity, and an expanded Space Command within the Bundeswehr.

Austria’s Defense Minister Claudia Tanner reaffirmed that Austria plans to put three operationally designated military satellites plus a test object into orbit next year, developed partly with Austrian startups."

India-Russia pact allows troops and warships on each other's soil

Good news! Maybe India can take care of this megalomaniac and warmonger Putin the Terrible!

"India and Russia have taken their defense ties to a new high in the form of a new pact under which they can share military bases, ports and airfields, and station up to 3,000 troops in each other's territory. ..."

NATO and the EU are paper tigers and unreliable allies

It has become very obvious when no European country offered immediately their navy to assist the US to protect the ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz after President Trump attacked Iran.

Shame on Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron (and his old, rich wife), Giorgia Meloni, and Friedrich Merz!

Giorgia Meloni even refused the use of Sicily by the US military! Very disappointing!

Perhaps, except the Ukraine.

What Could a Reciprocal Defense Procurement Agreement Do for U.S.-India Ties?

Good news!

Caveat: I did not read the entire long article.

"... It is also equally important to note that India already signed a Security of Supply Arrangement (SOSA) with the United States in August 2024. The SOSA, in short, provides a means for India and the United States to request priority delivery of certain defense items from each other.
How it differs from an RDPA is that a SOSA is non-binding and, accordingly, neither country is obligated to fulfil requests made under it to the other.
Additionally, an RDPA, unlike the SOSA, would make India a “qualifying country” under the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS), and this certification would smooth out additional compliance that Indian firms may need to sell to the U.S. industrial base.
Lastly, an RDPA would bring Indian vendors up to par with their counterparts in the United States when selling to the U.S. DoD and vice versa, subject, of course, to each country’s national laws and sourcing rules. This is aligned with the U.S.-India joint statement issued in February 2025, in which both sides agreed to design a new ten-year framework for the U.S.-India major defense partnership for the twenty-first century, with an RDP agreement. ...

India’s Operation Sindoor, a swift five-day military operation launched to strike at Pakistan’s terror camps and its key defense installations, showcased India’s growing weapons arsenal and military prowess, and was fairly well-received. Even the most hard-headed detractors of India’s defense preparedness concede that India’s defense missile system, including the Akashteer drone systems and the Brahmos missile system, performed very well. Reports have emerged about interest from Vietnam and Indonesia in India’s arms exports, which have also surged to an all-time high, with its latest defense exports being reported at approximately $2.75 billion. ..."

What Could a Reciprocal Defense Procurement Agreement Do for U.S.-India Ties? | Carnegie Endowment for International Peace "India and the United States are close to concluding a Reciprocal Defense Procurement Agreement (RDPA) that will allow firms from the two countries to sell to each other’s defense establishments more easily. While this may not remedy the specific grievances both sides may have regarding larger bilateral issues, an RDPA could restore some momentum, following the trade deal announcement."

Italy turns away Middle East-bound US military aircraft from Sicily stopover

Bad news! What the heck is Italian Prime Minister Meloni doing?

"U.S. military aircraft heading from the United States to the Middle East have been refused permission to stop off at an air base in Italy, an Italian government source has told Defense News. ...

Italy has a longstanding deal with the U.S. to allow it to use Sigonella for regular military flights, while permission for use of the base by flights not covered by the agreement must be granted by the Italian parliament.

In a speech to parliament this month, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said, “The bases used by the U.S. in Italy derive from agreements signed in 1954 and which have been updated since then by various governments. According to those agreements there are technical authorizations when it comes to logistics and non-kinetic operations that do not involve, put simply, bombing.” ..."

Ukraine and Saudi Arabia concluded a defense cooperation agreement

Good and unusual news!

"Ukraine and Saudi Arabia concluded a defense cooperation agreement on March 27. The Ukrainian Presidential Office reported that Ukraine will help Saudi Arabia with air defenses under the agreement, which also outlines the foundations for further contacts and includes technological cooperation and investments.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed the agreement ahead of further talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman al Saud. Zelensky stated that such cooperation can be mutually beneficial as Saudi Arabia has "something that Ukraine is interested in." Zelensky and al Saud discussed possible energy cooperation.
Zelensky also met with Ukrainian military experts who have been supporting air defense operations in Saudi Arabia for over a week (since at least March 20) and discussed additional measures to support Saudi Arabia's air defense operations. ISW continues to assess that Ukraine can offer the United States and US allies in the Middle East unique insights into how to counter Iranian strikes, as the Ukrainian military has institutionalized and operationalized the fighting experience that Ukraine has learned throughout the past four years of war."
