Biggest armies in Europe

Bad news!

"Russia and Ukraine now have the largest active military forces in Europe, with 1.3 million and 900,000 troops respectively, according to GlobalFirepower data for 2025.

Together, it’s estimated they outnumber all of NATO’s European armies combined. Among NATO members, Turkey (355,200 active), Poland (202,100), and the U.K. (184,860) top the list.

By comparison, the U.S. ranks among the largest globally, with about 1,328,000 active personnel across its military branches.

Countries like Finland and Estonia [and Switzerland] maintain large reserve forces despite smaller active rosters, underscoring how Europe’s military posture is shifting sharply in response to ongoing conflict."
